A spring storm system poised to sweep across the heartland during the final week of April is expected to bring a dangerous, multi-day severe weather event, with forecasters closely monitoring conditions from Oklahoma City and Tulsa to Minneapolis and Duluth. The threat begins Monday, with the greatest risk appearing to center on Iowa and surrounding portions of Kansas, Minnesota and Wisconsin, where an intensifying low-level jet could increase both the coverage and severity of thunderstorms. The FOX Forecast Center warns all modes of severe weather will be possible, including large hail, damaging winds and tornadoes, with the event likely to be more organized than what the Plains have recently experienced. A New Jersey man has been arrested and is facing arson charges after being accused of starting the Jones Road Wildfire that has consumed more than 15,000 acres in Ocean County since Tuesday. In a statement, officials said investigators determined that the cause of the fire was an improperly extinguished bonfire. They said 19-year-old Joseph Kling, of Waretown, is accused of setting wooden pallets on fire and leaving the area without the fire being fully extinguished. Kling has been charged with aggravated arson and arson in connection with the wildfire. As of Friday morning, the Jones Road Wildfire has burned about 15,250 acres and is about 50% contained. National Park Week is underway, and this year's theme is National Park Playlist, which celebrates musical connections to national parks and the American story. Daily Weather Update from FOX Weather: Threatening New Jersey wildfire smoke could choke NYC, Northeast
Welcome to the Daily Weather Update from FOX Weather. It's Thursday, April 24, 2025. Start your day with everything you need to know about today's weather. You can also get a quick briefing of national, regional and local weather whenever you like with the FOX Weather Update podcast. Firefighters continue to contain and extinguish the largest wildfire in years for New Jersey after torching more than 10,000 acres in an instant. Officials now warn the inferno could rage for several more days. As of Thursday, the Jones Road Wildfire has burned 13,250 acres and is only 50% contained. About 5,000 residents in Ocean County were forced to flee their homes to escape the fast-moving flames from the Jones Road Wildfire, which ignited early Tuesday morning within the Greenwood Forest Wildlife Management Area near Barnegat Township. Those terrified residents have since been given the all-clear to return to their homes, but officials have urged people to remain vigilant as wildfire smoke continues to choke communities along the Jersey Shore. Smoke from New Jersey's burning wildfire is anticipated to reach New York City on Thursday, affecting air quality. The Jones Road Fire erupted Tuesday afternoon in Ocean County. In just a few hours, it tripled in size, forcing thousands of people to flee their homes. On Wednesday, northerly winds were pushing wildfire smoke south into Atlantic City and surrounding areas, prompting an air quality alert. On Thursday, those winds will switch direction, pushing smoke north across parts of the Northeast. When the National Weather Service issues alerts for damaging hail, it's a clear sign that thunderstorms mean business, and that's exactly what storm chasers found out on Wednesday. Numerous chasers across Texas reported shattered windows and busted headlights as a barrage of large, unforgiving hail pummeled the region during a round of severe weather. While no significant injuries were reported, those who found themselves caught in the hail cores are now facing costly repairs. Daily Weather Update from FOX Weather: NJ fire burns over 8,500 acres as Plains brace for more severe weather
Welcome to the Daily Weather Update from FOX Weather. It's Wednesday, April 23, 2025. Start your day with everything you need to know about today's weather. You can also get a quick briefing of national, regional and local weather whenever you like with the FOX Weather Update podcast. Crews are continuing their relentless assault to beat back the flames of a massive wildfire that's exploding in size near the New Jersey shore. Thousands of residents have been forced to flee for safety while thick smoke choked the region, closing a miles-long stretch of the state's busiest highway for hours. The Jones Road Wildfire sparked on Tuesday in the Greenwood Forest Wildlife Management Area near Barnegat Township in Ocean County and quickly began to grow in size. As of Wednesday, it had consumed 8,500 acres and was only 10% contained. Continuing into Wednesday and Thursday, an active period of weather is in store for the Plains, including Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas. The FOX Forecast Center said a chance of severe storms or flash flooding looks very possible into the weekend. As the sun breaks through during the afternoon on Wednesday, enough heating could occur to support thunderstorm development. Storms that form here could bring brief strong wind gusts and small hail, though coverage and intensity will depend on how much sun breaks through. Isolated thunderstorms are also possible farther south, across the southern Plains and into far west Texas. These stronger storms may bring large hail and damaging winds. There is a potential for tornadoes to develop, but the overall severe weather threat will gradually decrease after sunset. Are national parks open? Yes, and here's why you should visit.
National Park Week kicked off on April 19 with free admission to every site in the National Park System and a week of programming to celebrate these special places. As people start to make their summer plans, many national park visitors will have questions beyond which sites to see or which trail to hike. After a record year for visitorship, February's federal layoffs hit the National Park Service hard, raising concerns about what kind of experience people can expect this summer. The short answer: You can and should visit national parks, but pack your patience along with your sunscreen. Here's what you need to know. Are national parks open? Despite staffing uncertainty, the Department of the Interior has made it clear parks will remain accessible. A directive issued April 3 mandates that parks stay open with posted hours upheld and any changes reviewed at the top. The goal is to preserve access and maintain service, even as the agency recovers. That said, you may notice some gaps—fewer rangers on-site, longer lines at visitor centers or slower updates to park alerts. But behind the scenes, things are improving. The 1,000 probationary staff terminated in February were reinstated after a court ruling, and hiring for seasonal positions is underway. Should I visit national parks right now? Yes. The parks need visitors, and gateway communities—towns and businesses that depend on park tourism—need your support. "It's a perfect time to visit national parks, to show your support for public lands in this country and our shared appreciation for the stories they share," said Elizabeth Silkes, CEO of Grand Canyon Conservancy, the official nonprofit partner of Grand Canyon National Park. "This is a moment to lean into what time spent in nature provides us, and it's also a moment for a new kind of questioning when we are in these spaces: What is our role in protecting them? What can we do to better amplify their needs?" For the best experience, be sure to plan ahead. The National Park Service website offers real-time updates and planning tools, including a "Plan Like a Park Ranger" section and weather alerts. The free NPS app is also essential—you can download maps and guides before you go in case you lose service. National Park week is a great time to visit a national park, but it's also a good time to plan ahead for a summer trip. Your visits are important to help sustain these places. But remember to go with realistic expectations, knowing that things might be a little rough around the edges this year. The parks are still some of the most beautiful, meaningful public spaces in the country, and right now they need you more than ever.
