Al Mashat Attends Farewell Ceremony for British Amb. in Cairo
Taarek Refaat Rania Al-Mashat, Minister of Planning and Economic Development participated in a farewell reception for British Ambassador Gareth Bayley, organized by the Egyptian-British Business Association. The event, held to mark the end of Ambassador Bayley's tenure in Egypt, was attended by prominent public figures and members of the Egyptian and British business communities. In her speech, Al-Mashat praised Ambassador Bayley's pivotal role in strengthening Egyptian-British economic relations since his arrival in 2021. She highlighted the Ambassador's efforts in fostering partnerships between the private sectors of both nations, notably through cooperation with the British International Investment (BII) and the fruitful bilateral collaboration between the governments of Egypt and the United Kingdom. Al-Mashat also reflected on the continued progress in Egyptian-British development cooperation, emphasizing the United Kingdom's support for the launch of Egypt's "Novee" National Platform. Additionally, the UK has contributed to the "Hafiz" platform, which provides both financial and technical support to Egypt's private sector. These efforts align with the two nations' joint goals of diversifying innovative financing sources for both public and private sectors, as well as supporting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and climate-focused startups. The Minister highlighted that the UK's commitment to Egypt's green transformation has been reflected in its support for climate-related financing mechanisms, such as the Climate Finance Acceleration Program, developed in collaboration with both the government and the private sector. In his farewell address, Ambassador Bayley expressed his sincere gratitude to the Egyptian government and people for the warm hospitality he received during his tenure. He acknowledged the longstanding and historical relationship between Egypt and the UK, underscoring the depth of cooperation between the two nations, both at the governmental and private sector levels. Bayley also pointed to several UK-supported projects in Egypt, such as the "Novee" National Platform, which plays a crucial role in attracting climate investments and advancing Egypt's green transformation agenda. Three days of protests leave seven dead in Togo, rights groups say
Civic rights groups say at least seven people have been killed during a crackdown on protesters who are calling for Togo's leader, Faure Gnassingbé, to step down and release political prisoners. Reports say dozens more people were injured - some severely. It comes weeks after Gnassingbé - who was president for two decades and whose family has ruled the country for 58 years - was sworn into a new post of President of the Council of Ministers, which has no official term limits. The Togolese government has now threatened legal action against the protest organisers, describing the demonstrations as a "campaign of disinformation and hatred" that was orchestrated from abroad. Demonstrations have been banned in the West African country since 2022, with the authorities citing "security reasons". Three days of demonstrations by online activists and youth-led movements began in the capital, Lomé, on Thursday, before taking a violent turn on Friday and Saturday. Tear gas was fired by anti-riot police at protesters, who pelted them with stones and other missiles. Some determined anti-government protesters engaged security forces in street battles in several areas considered to be opposition strongholds, including Bè, where police chased demonstrators into their hideouts. A coalition of 23 Togolese civil rights groups - known as the "National Platform for Civic Space and Development Effectiveness" - has asked the authorities to carry out investigations into the bloody police repression. They condemned what they described as "the use of disproportionate force against peaceful demonstrators", adding that "peaceful protest is a fundamental right, recognized both by the Togolese Constitution and by international instruments ratified by our country". By Sunday calm had returned to most of Lomé, with shops reopened at the main central market at Assigamé and businesses operating as usual. The recent change of regime orchestrated by the Togolese leader continues to fuel resentment. In addition to the new post which he can keep for life, constitutional reform in Togo has ended presidential elections, and introduced a parliamentary system. Last month's arrest and psychiatric detention of the Togolese rapper Narcisse Essowè Tchalla, also known as Aamron, acted as a catalyst for public outrage, culminating in over 50 arrests during protests earlier this month. HR Ministry stresses need to comply with provisions of updated regulation for house workers
Saudi Gazette report RIYADH — The Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development (MHRSD) emphasized the importance of adhering to the updated regulation for domestic workers and those in their position, which came into effect recently, in order to enhance an attractive work environment and safeguard the rights of all parties. The regulation was updated to regulate the contractual relationship between employers and domestic workers in a way that ensures reducing disputes and enhancing job stability. The ministry noted that the updated regulation sheds light on giving more clarifications on the contractual relationship, by defining the obligations and rights of both the employer and the domestic worker, and determining working hours and rest periods. It cites specifically the circumstances under in which the contract can be terminated or annulled, with the aim of facilitating contractual and judicial procedures in the event of any dispute. The amendments made in the regulation included adding new definitions and provisions that contribute to reducing disputes and ensuring justice in litigation, while the regulation stipulated penalties and fines that will be applied in the event of a breach of the specified regulations. This is in a way ensuring that all parties adhere to the directives and organizing laws, while taking into account the careful balance between rights and duties. It is noteworthy that the MHRAD launched the National Platform for Domestic Worker Services in the Kingdom (Musaned) as its official platform for household services and home employment program. Musaned is one of the initiatives of the ministry to develop the recruitment sector in the Kingdom. Musaned provides multiple services to improve and facilitate the recruitment journey, and to resolve complaints and disputes that may occur between the contracting parties, in addition to protecting their rights. The platform spells out the rights and duties of the worker and the employer.
