Former South African President Jacob Zuma continues visit to Morocco
Former South African President Jacob Zuma continued his visit to Morocco on Thursday, where he was welcomed in Rabat by Rachid Talbi Alami, President of the House of Representatives.
«The meeting, which was attended by the presidents of the House's parliamentary groups, was an opportunity to commend Mr. Zuma and his party for their clear stance in support of Morocco», read a statement from the House. «They affirmed that the autonomy plan proposed by the Kingdom provides concrete local governance for the people of the Sahara, while preserving Morocco's sovereignty over its territories».
Among the attendees were Mohamed Chaouki, President of the National Rally of Independents Group; Abderrahim Bouazza of the Authenticity and Modernity Group; Allal Amraoui, President of the Istiqlalian Group for Unity and Egalitarianism; Abderrahim Chahid, President of the Socialist Group – Ittihadi Opposition; Driss Sentissi, President of the Haraki Group; Rachid Hamouni, President of the Progress and Socialism Group; and Abdellah Bouanou, President of the Justice and Development Parliamentary Group.
Zuma was also received by Mohamed Ould Errachid, President of the House of Councillors. Their meeting underscored mutual appreciation for the ANC's supportive position on Morocco's autonomy initiative, described as a credible and realistic solution to the Sahara dispute. Zuma reiterated his backing for Morocco's historical and legal sovereignty over its southern provinces and praised the Kingdom's peaceful approach.
Ould Errachid, for his part, stressed the role of parliamentary diplomacy in fostering bilateral ties and promoting African solidarity. Both sides expressed a desire to enhance cooperation between Moroccan and South African legislative institutions, grounded in respect for sovereignty, unity, and the shared development of the African continent.
Earlier that day, Zuma also met with the collegial leadership of the Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM) in Rabat.
The visit follows his Tuesday meeting with Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita, during which Zuma publicly reaffirmed his support for Morocco's sovereignty over the Sahara.
