Saudi Railways Achieve Record 35M Passengers in Q1 2025
Saudi Arabia's rail sector experienced a remarkable surge in the first quarter of 2025, transporting a record of over 35 million passengers nationwide. The Transport General Authority (TGA) reported that intercity train services carried more than 3.4 million passengers during this period, indicating a substantial increase in demand. This growth reflects the public's growing trust in rail as a reliable mode of transportation.
Intra-city trains accounted for a significant portion of the total ridership, with over 32.3 million passengers utilizing these services. The Riyadh Metro led the urban rail networks, serving more than 25 million passengers in the first quarter alone. This high usage underscores the effectiveness of urban rail systems in meeting the daily commuting needs of residents. Airport and University Shuttles Enhance Connectivity
The automated shuttle at King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah transported over 6 million passengers, facilitating seamless airport transfers. Similarly, the automated shuttle at Princess Noura bint Abdulrahman University in Riyadh served more than 900,000 passengers, highlighting the role of specialized transit solutions in improving accessibility.
Beyond passenger services, Saudi Arabia's railways played a crucial role in freight transport, moving over 3.8 million tons of goods and more than 239,000 containers. This efficient movement of commodities supports the Kingdom's industrial and mining sectors, aligning with the objectives of the National Strategy for Transport and Logistics Services.
The expansion of rail services not only enhances mobility but also contributes to environmental sustainability by reducing carbon emissions.
