Saudi Railways Achieve Record 35M Passengers in Q1 2025
Saudi Arabia's rail sector experienced a remarkable surge in the first quarter of 2025, transporting a record of over 35 million passengers nationwide. The Transport General Authority (TGA) reported that intercity train services carried more than 3.4 million passengers during this period, indicating a substantial increase in demand. This growth reflects the public's growing trust in rail as a reliable mode of transportation.
Intra-city trains accounted for a significant portion of the total ridership, with over 32.3 million passengers utilizing these services. The Riyadh Metro led the urban rail networks, serving more than 25 million passengers in the first quarter alone. This high usage underscores the effectiveness of urban rail systems in meeting the daily commuting needs of residents. Airport and University Shuttles Enhance Connectivity
The automated shuttle at King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah transported over 6 million passengers, facilitating seamless airport transfers. Similarly, the automated shuttle at Princess Noura bint Abdulrahman University in Riyadh served more than 900,000 passengers, highlighting the role of specialized transit solutions in improving accessibility.
Beyond passenger services, Saudi Arabia's railways played a crucial role in freight transport, moving over 3.8 million tons of goods and more than 239,000 containers. This efficient movement of commodities supports the Kingdom's industrial and mining sectors, aligning with the objectives of the National Strategy for Transport and Logistics Services.
The expansion of rail services not only enhances mobility but also contributes to environmental sustainability by reducing carbon emissions. By providing safe and convenient transportation options, Saudi Arabia's rail network supports the nation's broader goals of economic diversification and environmental conservation.

Eid Al-Adha 2025: Your Guide to Riyadh Metro Operating Hours
As Saudi Arabia is gearing up for Eid Al-Adha holiday, Riyadh Transport has announced adjusted operating hours for Riyadh Metro. The new working hours will take effect from Thursday, June 5, 2025 until Thursday, June 12, 2025. The changes aim to accommodate the increased movement and travel patterns during the Eid Al-Adha holiday. According to the Riyadh Transport X account, the Orange Line will operate daily from 10 am to midnight, effective from June 5 until June 14 (corresponding to Dhu'al-Hijjah 9 to 18). The line will resume its regular timetable on June 15, 2025, operating from 6 am to midnight. Meanwhile, the other Riyadh Metro lines (Red, Blue, Green, Purple and Yellow) will have a different timetable as follows: From 8 am to midnight on June 5 From 10 am to midnight on June 6, 7, and 8 From 8 am to midnight on June 9, 10, and 11 The lines will get back to regular schedule on June 12, 2025, operating from 6 am to midnight. Furthermore, the Riyadh Transport announced adjusted operating hours for Riyadh Buses, which will work from 5 am to midnight from June 5 to June 12. The on-demand bus service will also be available throughout the same period to meet the increased demand during Eid Al-Adha holiday. On November 27, 2024, the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, officially inaugurated the Riyadh Metro project, one of the largest transportation networks in the world. TGA Carries Out Over 219,000 Transport Inspections in Makkah, Madinah Ahead of Hajj
The Transport General Authority (TGA), in coordination with relevant entities, has intensified inspection efforts in Makkah and Madinah as part of preparations for the upcoming Hajj season. From the start of Dhu al-Qi'dah to the beginning of Dhu al-Hijjah, TGA teams conducted more than 219,772 inspections of transport services. These inspections led to the detection of over 20,429 violations, with an additional 5,996 violations recorded through automated monitoring systems. The initiative underscores the TGA's commitment to ensuring safe, efficient, and regulation-compliant transportation for pilgrims during Hajj. Violations identified included unlicensed drivers, failure to adhere to official uniform standards, unauthorized passenger transport, and the operation of freight vehicles without valid operating cards.
