SRINAGAR: Union tourism minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat on Monday said tourism in Kashmir, which was severely impacted by the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack , was now showing signs of revival following various initiatives taken by the Centre and the J&K govt. 'The efforts by J&K govt, along with central govt's initiatives like sending delegations, organising conferences etc., have helped in rebuilding confidence,' Shekhawat said. 'These efforts will bear fruit and in the coming days, tourism in Kashmir will be back in full swing.' The minister mentioned that he had visited Kashmir last month and had sent out a message that the Valley was safe. 'What happened is unfortunate, but we must move forward,' he added. Shekhawat was talking to reporters on the sidelines of a two-day National Tourism Secretaries' Conference, organised by his ministry in Srinagar. 'India has immense tourism potential, and it is growing. We aim to develop 50 iconic global standard destinations that offer world-class facilities to every tourist,' the Union minister said. The LG interacted with the pilgrims, service providers and sanitation workers, and took stock of the facilities for the devotees. During his visit, Sinha chaired a meeting with the administrative and security officials and discussed measures taken for a safe and hassle-free yatra. He commended the significant contribution of all stakeholders in the smooth conduct of the annual pilgrimage. Sinha was accompanied by Shri AmarnathJi Shrine Board CEO Mandeep K. Bhandari, IGP (Kashmir) V K Birdi and other senior officers of district administration, police, security forces and SASB.

The Congress on Monday will decide whether it will fight the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections in alliance or go it solo. AICC general secretary in-charge of Maharashtra Ramesh Chennithala announced this after a meeting of senior leaders of the party from the state. He said the party will also consult its local leaders on the issue for other local body elections across Maharashtra. 'The political affairs committee of the Congress in Maharashtra would hold a meeting in Mumbai on July 7 where a final decision on whether to go alone or in alliance in the upcoming BMC elections will be taken,' he said. Senior party leaders from the state including former Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan, Rajani Patil, Maharashtra Congress chief Harshwardhan Sapkal and former PCC chief Nana Patole were present in the meeting. They later met Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge at his residence and briefed him about the discussions. 'We discussed our future strategy and other important issues. We will continue to strengthen the party in Maharashtra. From now on, one such meeting will be organised every month where senior leaders from the state would meet and discuss important issues before the party,' he said. J&K to host national tourism secretaries conference In a first, Jammu and Kashmir will be the host for the two-day National Tourism Secretaries' Conference beginning Monday, where high-level deliberations on collaborative policy-making and strategic planning in the sector would take place. The conference, organised by the Union Ministry for Tourism at the Sher-i-Kashmir International Conference Centre (SKICC) in Srinagar on July 7 and 8, will give a significant boost to Jammu and Kashmir's tourism profile, a government spokesperson said. The national event will bring together the tourism secretaries and heads from all states and Union Territories, he said. Senior dignitaries expected to attend the event include the Union Minister for Culture and Tourism, the Union Home Secretary and the Secretary of the Ministry of Tourism. – With PTI inputs
