Eritrean Nationals Celebrate Independence Day Anniversary
Eritrean nationals in Saudi Arabia, Great Britain, Germany, Australia, and New Zealand have colorfully celebrated the 34th Independence Day anniversary under the theme 'Our Cohesion – Our Armour.' The celebratory event in Dammam, held on 30 May, was attended by Ms. Weini Gerezgihier, Chargé d'Affaires at the Eritrean Embassy in Saudi Arabia; Mr. Gebremeskel Kidane, Chairman of the Eritrean Community in Dammam; and Ms. Abrehet Minasie, Chairperson of the National Union of Eritrean Women in the city, along with a number of nationals. The event featured various cultural and artistic programs. Speaking on the occasion, Ms. Weini emphasized the deep meaning of the theme of this year's Independence Day anniversary, stating that with committed leadership, a united people, and a dedicated Defense Force, Eritrea, just as it did in achieving independence and safeguarding sovereignty, will emerge victorious in national development endeavors. The 34th Independence Day anniversary was also enthusiastically celebrated across British cities, including London, Birmingham, Manchester, Glasgow, Leeds, Sheffield, Liverpool, Middlesbrough, Leicester, Nottingham, Coventry, Newcastle, Wakefield, Bristol, Southampton, Cardiff, and Dublin. The London event was attended by over 50 government and country representatives, diplomats, friends of Eritrea, officials from the UK Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and a large number of Eritrean nationals. Mr. Ahmed Mohammed Mahmud, Chairman of the Eritrean National Committee, and Mr. Saleh Abdella, Chargé d'Affaires at the Eritrean Embassy, congratulated the people, Government, and Eritrean Defense Forces. They noted that this year's anniversary showcased the profound love Eritreans have for their country and flag. Likewise, Eritrean communities in the German cities of Munich, Lörrach-Waldshut, Fulda, Bergstrasse, Bremen, Wiesbaden, Rosenheim, Augsburg, and Kaufbeuren celebrated the occasion with cultural and artistic performances reflecting the spirit of the day. In Australia, nationals in Melbourne, Perth, Sydney, Brisbane, and Adelaide, as well as in Christchurch and Canterbury, New Zealand, marked the anniversary with patriotic fervor. At the Melbourne event, Mr. Kidane Ginbot, Chairman of the Eritrean Community, and Mr. Mehari Tekeste, Eritrea's Consul General, delivered speeches highlighting the heavy sacrifices made for independence and the responsibilities it shoulders to the Eritrean people. Ms. Jill Morgan, representing the Victoria Council, remarked that witnessing the love Eritreans have for their country does not require traveling to Eritrea. She praised their unity and deep attachment to their homeland. Eritrean nationals in the French cities of Lyon and Saint-Nazaire also celebrated the 34th Independence Day anniversary with enthusiasm. Eritrea: Public Diplomacy Activities by Diaspora National
Nationals in Germany, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, New Zealand, and the United States have conducted various public diplomacy activities. According to reports, the national committee of Eritreans in Germany held its 4th Congress on 15 April in Frankfurt, attended by representatives from 26 cities across Germany. Mr. Yohannes Woldu, Chargé d'Affaires at the Eritrean Embassy in Germany, noted that national associations have reached a new stage by strengthening their organizational capacity. He commended the national committee for its relentless efforts in organizing activities for the national associations. Mr. Yohannes Mebrahtu, chairman of the national committee, presented an activity report outlining the achievements registered, challenges encountered, and measures taken to address those challenges. Meanwhile, Mr. Kibreab Tekeste, Eritrea's Consul General in Frankfurt, conducted a seminar for nationals in Nuremberg focusing on the current situation in the homeland. Mr. Kibreab stated that the Eritrean people, while safeguarding their country's sovereignty, are actively involved in the national construction process and development. He also called on nationals to strengthen their resilience against forces attempting to reverse the country's progress. Mr. Teame Haile, head of Public and Community Affairs at the Eritrean Embassy, called on nationals to support the construction of a boarding school in Afambo, Southern Red Sea Region. Similar seminars were held in Frankfurt, Cologne, Düsseldorf, and Mannheim. In related news, Eritrean nationals in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, held a meeting to elect a new committee for the International Community School. The meeting, attended by Mr. Abdurahman Osman, Eritrea's Consul in Jeddah, resulted in the election of a new committee for a five-year term. In Egypt, the National Union of Eritrean Women branch conducted a seminar for members on 12 April in Cairo. At the event, Ms. Sa'adia Ibrahim, head of the National Union of Eritrean Women in the Southern Red Sea Region, and Ms. Kaltum Adm, head of the union branch in Egypt, gave extensive briefings on the current situation of Eritrean women in Egypt. Mr. Aman Abdulwasi'e, Chargé d'Affaires at the Eritrean Embassy in Egypt, was also in attendance. Likewise, the Eritrean community in Auckland, New Zealand, participated in the International Cultural Festival held on 6 April. During the event, the community showcased various materials promoting Eritrea's culture and heritage. The National Council of Eritrean Americans in the Southwest conducted its 12th Congress in Santiago, California. Additionally, the national committee of Eritreans in Lancaster, California, held a public meeting. At the meeting, Mr. Berhane Gebrehiwet, Chargé d'Affaires at the Eritrean Embassy, urged nationals—especially the youth—to strengthen their organizational capacity and actively participate in national affairs. Financial Support to the National Association of Eritrean War Disabled Veterans (NAEWDV)
Nationals inside the country and abroad have contributed over 800 thousand Nakfa in support of the National Association of Eritrean War Disabled Veterans. Mr. Fesehaye Tesfamicael, Chairman of the Association, reported that members of the Swedish branch of the association, members of the National Union of Eritrean Women branch in Germany, and the 'Tsinat' and 'Awet Nhafash' groups contributed a total of 617,619 Nakfa. Additionally, the 'Paltalk EPLF HIGDEF Vision Room' group in Denmark contributed 170,452 Nakfa in support of female war-disabled veterans in Denden Camp, Asmara. Former students of the ex-Comboni School in Asmara also contributed 23,000 Nakfa to support the Association. At the handover ceremony conducted on 4 April, contributors of the support stated that the contributions made by nationals both inside the country and abroad reflect the honor and respect they have for the war-disabled veterans, as well as the strong bond they maintain with their homeland. Eritrea: Congress of the Board of National Union of Eritrean Women (NUEW) in Laelai Gash
The board of the National Union of Eritrean Women (NUEW) in the Laelai Gash sub-zone held its first congress on 16 and 17 March. During the congress, 14 board members were elected from the administrative areas of Tokombia, Birar, Meflech, Adi-Bigidi, Shilalo, Adi-Tsetser, Sheshebit, and Adhakin. Ms. Rigat Dagnew, Secretary of the National Union of Eritrean Women, presented a report highlighting the efforts undertaken and the achievements registered over the past 10 years in strengthening organizational capacity and enhancing women's participation in national affairs. Ms. Yihdega Yohannes, head of National Union of Eritrean Women in the Gash Barka region, stated that the establishment of a board at the sub-zone level reflects the strong organizational capacity of the union. She also urged the newly elected members to work diligently in boosting the union's income and realizing its objectives and mission. Mr. Gide Estifanos, administrator of the sub-zone, emphasized that Eritrean women continue to play a historic role, as demonstrated in the struggle for national independence, the safeguarding of national sovereignty, and the implementation of national development programs. International Women's Day Celebration in Gash Barka
International Women's Day was colorfully celebrated at the Gash Barka regional level in the Gogni sub-zone on 5 March under the theme 'Women: Emancipation for All-Rounded Development.' The event featured a march by women members of the Defense Forces, students, and the public, as well as cultural and artistic performances. Ms. Yihdega Yohannes, head of the National Union of Eritrean Women in the region, stated that this year's celebration is particularly significant as it coincides with Eritrea's transition to a new phase of development. She also urged women to actively participate in national development programs and benefit from available opportunities. Heads from the National Confederation of Eritrean Workers and the National Union of Eritrean Youth and Students delivered messages of solidarity. They emphasized that women's issues should not be left solely to the National Union of Eritrean Women and called on all relevant institutions to take concrete steps toward women's empowerment. Ambassador Mahmud Ali Hirui, Governor of the region, encouraged women and other members of society to work together in enhancing women's capacities and ensuring they benefit from all available opportunities.
