NSTL celebrates National Technology Day

Visakhapatnam: Chief Operating Officer, Kochi Water Metro Limited, Sajan P John opined that technology and its advancements are the solutions to various upcoming dynamic problems. Marking the National Technology Day 2025, Naval Science and Technological Laboratory (NSTL), the premier naval research laboratory of Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), organised a programme at NSTL family welfare centre here on Monday. Speaking on the occasion, Sajan P John briefed in detail how Kochi Water Metro was incepted and successfully developed. Scientist-F and chairman NTDC-2025 K Srikanth explained in detail the background of National Technology Day and theme of the day 'Yantra – Yugantar' for advancing new technology, research and acceleration. Outstanding scientist and Director NSTL Dr Abraham Varughese elaborated the aptness of the theme of NTD 2025 to the existing geo-political scenario. He mentioned that a nation can be strengthened if the technological advancements are fruitfully utilised at maximum. The director strongly felt the Prime Minister's vision of Vikasit Bharat can be realised with more concentration on recent technological frontiers viz Artificial Intelligence, Quantum Computing, advances in material science, etc. He appealed to the NSTL fraternity to work smart and innovative towards developing indigenous technologically advanced underwater systems. During the programme, the Titanium medal was presented to Khagesh Kumar Choudhary, Scientist-E for his oration on 'Thermal Suppression of Gas Turbine Exhaust in Compact Tunnel of Warship'. Outstanding scientist HN Das, scientist-G D.R. Rajeswari Devi, Other scientists, officers, staff, NSTL Civil Employees Union and other leaders participated in the programme.

In a display of its advanced defense capabilities, India successfully test-fired an indigenously designed and developed underwater naval mine designed to enhance the Navy's capabilities against modern stealth ships and submarines. The Indian Navy and Defence Research of Development Organisation (DRDO) conducted the 'combat firing" of Multi-Influence Ground Mine (MIGM), developed by the Naval Science and Technological Laboratory, Visakhapatnam, in collaboration with other DRDO laboratories. The announcement came from the Ministry of Defence on Monday amid the simmering ties between India and Pakistan following the last month's Pahalgam terror attack. 'The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Indian Navy have successfully undertaken combat firing (with reduced explosive) of the indigenously designed and developed Multi-Influence Ground Mine (MIGM)," the defence ministry said on Monday. The DRDO also shared a video of the test firing in which an underwater explosion took place with reduced explosives. The MIGM system is equipped with multiple sensors capable of detecting acoustic, magnetic, and pressure signatures produced by marine vessels. It has been designed to operate effectively in complex maritime environments. Bharat Dynamics Limited, Visakhapatnam and Apollo Microsystems Limited, Hyderabad are the production partners for the system. Earlier, Indian Navy's latest destroyer, INS Surat (D69), successfully test-fired a Medium Range Surface-to-Air Missile (MRSAM) against a sea-skimming target in the Arabian Sea. New Delhi tests its first underwater robot (VIDEO)

India announced on Monday the successful testing of its High Endurance Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (HEAUV), developed by the Naval Science and Technological Laboratory (NSTL). The NTSL is a defense research laboratory based in Visakhapatnam on the southeastern coast of India. The HEAUV underwent trials in a lake, demonstrating its capabilities in both surface and submerged conditions through multiple runs. The location of the testing was not disclosed. These unmanned underwater robots vary in size from a few hundred to several thousand pounds. They are capable of gliding from the surface of the ocean to the depths and back, or stopping, hovering, and moving in a manner similar to blimps or helicopters. The HEAUV is designed for high endurance, allowing it to operate for extended periods without needing to resurface or recharge frequently. This is essential for missions that require long-duration underwater operations, such as ocean floor mapping, surveillance, intelligence gathering, and oceanographic studies, according to industry watchers. The AUV is equipped with anti-submarine warfare and advanced sensors to detect and track other submarines. The development of the HEAUV is part of efforts to achieve self-reliance in defense technology, in line with initiatives such as the 'Make in India' program, a brainchild of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Recently, the Indian military designated more than 5,000 items as essential for domestic production, prioritizing their manufacture within the country.
