
‘Designed To Operate Against…': India Test Fires Advanced Underwater Naval Mine
MIGM is an advanced underwater naval mine developed by the Naval Science and Technological Laboratory, Visakhapatnam in collaboration with other DRDO laboratories.
In a display of its advanced defense capabilities, India successfully test-fired an indigenously designed and developed underwater naval mine designed to enhance the Navy's capabilities against modern stealth ships and submarines.
The Indian Navy and Defence Research of Development Organisation (DRDO) conducted the 'combat firing" of Multi-Influence Ground Mine (MIGM), developed by the Naval Science and Technological Laboratory, Visakhapatnam, in collaboration with other DRDO laboratories.
The announcement came from the Ministry of Defence on Monday amid the simmering ties between India and Pakistan following the last month's Pahalgam terror attack.
'The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Indian Navy have successfully undertaken combat firing (with reduced explosive) of the indigenously designed and developed Multi-Influence Ground Mine (MIGM)," the defence ministry said on Monday.

Complimenting DRDO, Indian Navy and the Industry, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said the system will further enhance undersea warfare capabilities of the Indian Navy.
The DRDO also shared a video of the test firing in which an underwater explosion took place with reduced explosives.
The MIGM system is equipped with multiple sensors capable of detecting acoustic, magnetic, and pressure signatures produced by marine vessels. It has been designed to operate effectively in complex maritime environments. Bharat Dynamics Limited, Visakhapatnam and Apollo Microsystems Limited, Hyderabad are the production partners for the system.
Earlier, Indian Navy's latest destroyer, INS Surat (D69), successfully test-fired a Medium Range Surface-to-Air Missile (MRSAM) against a sea-skimming target in the Arabian Sea. The successful firing of the MRSAM underscored the destroyer's ability to effectively counter modern aerial threats, including those that approach at low altitudes to evade radar detection.

These trials of MIGM come at a time as India strengthens its defence posture in response to growing regional threats following the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22, in which terrorists linked to LeT killed 26 civilians.

'I can say with pride that Operation Sindoor's success was powered by homegrown systems such as Akash short- and medium-range surface-to-air missiles, BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles, the D4 anti-drone system, airborne early warning and control platforms, the Akashteer air defence control system, and advanced C4I systems,' Kamat said, adding that institutions like DIAT played a critical role in these achievements. Describing the mission as 'more than a military operation' and a declaration of India's ability to stand tall through self-reliance, strategic foresight and indigenous innovation, Kamat urged graduates to sustain the momentum, reminding them that India aims to be a developed nation and a global technology leader by 2047. He stressed that DIAT graduates are not generalists but specialists in critical domains such as quantum technology, cybersecurity, robotics, propulsion, missile systems, materials engineering, and AI—skills with direct national security applications.
