You Can Get 4 Years of Free Wine to Help Scientists Study the Effects of Moderate Drinking

Researchers in Spain are conducting the world's largest clinical trial on the health effects of moderate alcohol consumption, tracking 10,000 adults aged 50–75 over four years. The study, funded by the European Research Council, aims to provide clear evidence on whether moderate drinking is beneficial, neutral, or harmful—but volunteers must live in Spain to join. Do you enjoy sipping a glass of wine each evening? If so, scientists in Spain are looking for your help—and will give you free wine in exchange. In May, The Olive Press shared the news that researchers at the University of Navarra's Alumni Trialist Initiative (UNATI) are currently seeking volunteers to participate in the world's largest clinical trial on alcohol, aiming to understand the effects of moderate drinking on human health. As the volunteer intake form explained, participants will be tracked for the next four years to "determine whether moderate alcohol consumption is beneficial, neutral, or harmful to health." The research, funded by a €2.4 million (about $2.79 million) grant via the European Research Council, will track 10,000 people aged 50 to 75 split into two groups: one group who will consume alcohol daily (moderate amounts equal to fewer than seven drinks a week for women and 14 drinks a week for men) and the other who will completely abstain from any alcohol throughout the research period. Those who sign up must be prepared to join either group, as they will be randomly assigned to either arm. Both groups will undergo in-depth health surveys at the start and end of the trial, be asked to join quarterly meetings, and be willing to work with health coaches. "Policymakers and clinicians are currently perplexed on how to reduce alcohol harms in drinkers, because of contradictory guidelines: abstention is proposed as the healthiest option by many health advocates, stating that 'there is no safe level of alcohol intake,' but most nonrandomized studies found lower all-cause mortality and other beneficial outcomes in moderate drinkers than in abstainers among subjects over 50," the research plan's abstract explains. "However, potential biases may compromise these latter studies, particularly when effects are null or moderate." Thus, it's pulling together its "large pragmatic randomized controlled trial" to really get to what's what. "It will provide first-level evidence to confront the harms of one of the most widely used substances by humankind," it added. Both groups will receive "gift foods and beverages." The abstainers will receive "0%-alcohol beer, and extra-virgin olive oil to foster adherence to the Mediterranean diet," while the moderation group will receive "red wine (1.5 l/mo) and the same amount of extra-virgin olive oil to foster adherence to the Mediterranean diet as in the other group." To avoid any conflict of interest, the free wine will come from a supermarket chain, not from any single winery or alcohol company. To date, the Olive Press reported that 6,500 participants have signed up, meaning the team is still seeking 3,500 volunteers in the 50-75 age range. There is, however, one major catch: you must live in Spain to participate. But now's as good a time as any to move there, right?

Real Madrid Officially Announces First Team Transfer

Spanish soccer giant Real Madrid has sold one of its first team squad members as confirmed by the club in an official statement, as well as the buying party. 'Real Madrid CF and CA Osasuna have reached an agreement for the transfer of our player Víctor Munoz,' correspondence from Madrid began. "Victor Munoz arrived at our club's youth academy in 2021 at the age of 18. Since then, he has played in the Juvenil A, RSC Internacional and, the last two seasons, in Castilla. He made his debut in May 2025 with Real Madrid's first team. The club thanks him for his work, dedication and commitment, and wishes him and his family the best of luck in this new stage of his life," it then conclude. In its own statement, Osasuna said that 'the Navarrese club will pay €5,000,000 for fifty percent of his economic rights, to which an additional million could be added depending on the player's sporting milestones'. Osasuna further explained that the attacker's release clause will be €40 million, with Madrid also reserving 'a buyback option on the player at the conclusion of the next three seasons'. 'The footballer, who has recently concluded his participation in the Club World Cup, will join the Osasuna discipline on July 22. Upon his arrival, he will be presented as a new player of the entity,' the Basques added. Regarding the buyback clause, this increases the likelihood of the Catalan being able to complete what is known as the 'Carvajal route', i.e. being sold as graduate of La Fabrica and then being brought to the first team should the player in question kick on away from the Bernabeu. At the end of last season, Victor Munoz coming off the bench in El Clasico and almost scoring against FC Barcelona in Montjuic showed that he might have a future in the post-Carlo Ancelotti era. Just a few months, however, he has been moved on yet might have a way back to the Spanish capital if he can impress in Pamplona. New candidates emerged in Munoz's way at Real Madrid While Munoz was chosen to come off the bench instead of Rodrygo in the mentioned Clasico, fellow academy graduate Gonzalo Garcia emerged in the Club World Cup. Though originally a central 9, his deployment on the right wing in the 4-0 humbling to Paris Saint-Germain, to accommodate both Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Jr., would have further complicated Munoz's battle for minutes at Real Madrid.

Daredevils are thrown into the air and smashed by bull as first person is gored by bull in this year's Running of the Bulls festival in Spain

Spain 's famous Running of the Bulls festival saw its first gore injury this morning as five people were taken to hospital. A fighting bull which became separated from the rest of the pack caused chaos and panic among revellers. The 575 kilo (90 stone) animal called Caminante, or 'Walker', lifted one runner into the air and smashed him down onto the tarmac of Pamplona's old town on his head. At one point it even turned on one of the ranchers trying to guide it towards pens in the bullring at the end of the half-mile course. Towards the finish it appeared to dig its horns into the stomach one of the six steers that accompany the six fighting bulls on each of the eight morning runs, narrowly missing a reveller in traditional festival attire who was sprawled helpless on his back. Today's drama during the second morning run, known in Spanish as an encierro, meant it was five minutes and 22 seconds before Caminante reached the end of the course. The last of the bulls to finish yesterday took just over two and a half minutes to finish. In an initial casualty round-up moments after the end of the day two encierro, a Red Cross official confirmed one person had suffered a gore wound and had been among five people taken to hospital. It was not immediately clear how bad the injury was although the victim is said to have been gored in the arm. One participant speaking after the event said: 'It was panic out there today. It's a miracle if only one person ended up getting gored. It could have been into double figures.' The bulls that starred in today's run were from the Cebada Gago ranch in the province of Cadiz and have a reputation for being the most dangerous. Caminante was the second heaviest of the six fighting bulls that took part, with another called Lioso weighing in at a whopping 580 kilos (just over 91 stone). Yesterday five people were rushed to hospital after being injured during the first encierro, all men from Spain aged 21 to 49. One suffered a serious chest trauma injury and was left with multiple rib fractures. The famous festival in the northern Spanish town, popularly known as the Sanfermines, kicked off at midday on Sunday with the traditional opening ceremony called the Chupinazo. Thousands of revellers dressed in the must-wear white outfits with a red bandana around their necks ending up soaked in wine and sangria. The San Fermin festival runs until 14 July 2025 Sixteen people have been killed during the bull runs at the annual festival, which finishes on July 14 and was made famous by 1926 Ernest Hemingway novel 'The Sun Also Rises', since records began in 1910. The most recent death was in 2009 when 27-year-old Daniel Jimeno, from Madrid, was gored in the neck by a bull called Capuchino. Several foreigners, from Australians to Americans through to Brits and Irish, are normally among the injured. The first of the eight encierros last year took place four hours after a San Fermin reveller collapsed and died. Police rushed to the scene and tried to save the 40-year-old man but were unable to resuscitate him.

The Best Places to Eat, Drink and Shop in Manila, According to Chef Jordy Navarra

Pairing coffee and cocktails is the latest trend in Makati, Navarra says. He touts spots in Legazpi Village like Curator Coffee & Cocktails, a café that at night transitions into a bar often helmed by guest mixologists from cities including New York, Singapore, and Seoul, and Ito, which offers prix fixe 'drinking sessions' featuring espresso-based concoctions, matcha, and nonalcoholic tipples along with snack pairings. 'I work with the same farmers as they do,' Navarra says of Ito, 'so I enjoy seeing the same produce we use at Toyo come to life in cocktails.' Shop smart Navarra shops right in The Alley at Karrivin, the Makati building complex that houses his restaurant. Aphro sells locally made stoneware, ceramics, and textiles, while the galleries Artinformal and the Drawing Room focus on Filipino artists. Eco-friendly Ritual stocks heritage goods, skin-care products, and books. 'I visit them whenever I can,' Navarra says. He also suggests the designs of Carl Jan Cruz, who created Toyo's uniforms: 'His showroom in nearby Taguig has everyday wear as well as special pieces.' Roberto Coin Taps Dakota Johnson as Global Brand Ambassador

Roberto Coin, the jeweler known for mixing Italian craftsmanship and romance, has named Dakota Johnson global brand ambassador. 'Dakota Johnson is a true original. I love her expressions — an artist with authenticity, depth, and a unique ability to connect,' founder and creative director Roberto Coin said. 'We are proud to welcome her to the Roberto Coin family and to collaborate on a campaign that speaks to the heart of who we are.' 'We've previously worked with incredible models like Arizona Muse and Christy Turlington to represent the beauty and craft of our jewelry,' Coin told WWD. 'With Dakota, we're evolving — not just showcasing jewelry, but aligning with a voice and personality that resonates more deeply with today's luxury consumer. 'This is about emotion, identity, and storytelling beyond the visual. Dakota is both contemporary and classic — much like the women who wear Roberto Coin,' the founder said. 'She's an artist, a risk-taker, and a woman of substance. Her quiet confidence and nuanced style reflect the essence of what we design: beauty with meaning. There was an instant synergy. She didn't just wear the jewelry — she understood it.' Starting in June and running through May 2027, Johnson will appear in a new global campaign photographed by Craig McDean. Set against the historical backdrop of Venice, the campaign aims to capture the fusion of classic Italian beauty and contemporary elegance that Roberto Coin's jewelry exemplifies. For Coin, the connection to the romantic city is deeply personal. Born in Venice, the founder says the city's essence has profoundly shaped his creativity — its rich history, majestic architecture, and vibrant artistic culture have long influenced his designs and inspired many of his collections. 'I've always believed that jewelry tells a story — of who you are, where you've been, and what you love,' Johnson said in a statement. 'Roberto Coin's pieces are full of depth and meaning, and I'm honored to help bring that spirit to life through this collaboration. There's romance, strength, and bold femininity in every design.' The campaign rolls out with both video and still photography, highlighting Johnson wearing pieces from the brand's key collections: Love in Verona, Venetian Princess, Navarra, Obelisco, Tiaré, and Cobra. Rounding out the new role, the actress will make global appearances and participate in creative initiatives, helping to share the Roberto Coin story.
