IndiGo set to be first airline to operate from Navi Mumbai airport, plans to connect over 15 cities on Day 1
Indian low-cost carrier IndiGo is set to become the first airline operator to start flight operations from the Adani Group-owned Navi Mumbai International Airport, reported the news agency ANI, citing a joint statement on Wednesday, 28 May 2025. 'We are delighted to announce IndiGo as the first airline partner to commence operations from NMIA. This partnership marks a major step towards confirming NMIA's position as a transfer hub for domestic and international travellers,' said Arun Bansal, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Adani Airport Holdings Ltd, as cited by the news agency. IndiGo aims to have 18 daily departures to more than 15 cities from the first day of operations at the Navi Mumbai International Airport. The airline also plans to increase its operations to 79 daily departures, out of which 14 will be international, by the beginning of November 2025. 'IndiGo will be the inaugural airline to operate from NMIA and we couldn't be more pleased to announce this. Our alliance signals towards achievement of complete operational readiness on both sides to take next steps. This expansion underscores our dedication to catering to the evolving needs of our aspirational travellers and further contributing to the growth of India's booming aviation sector,' said Pieter Elbers, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of IndiGo in the statement, cited by the news agency. According to the official data, the Navi Mumbai International Airport will feature a 3,700-meter runway capable of handling large commercial aircraft, modern passenger terminals, and advanced air traffic control systems. An earlier Mint report highlights that the first phase of the new airport is estimated to handle 20 million passengers and 0.5 million tonnes of cargo annually. After its full completion, the Adani Group-owned airport will have a total capacity of handling nearly 90 million passengers per year and 3.2 million tonnes of cargo annually. The international airport covers 2,866 acres and is expected to be inaugurated for flight operations in the first half of 2025. Adani Group currently owns the Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Lucknow, Mangaluru, Jaipur, Guwahati, and Thiruvananthapuram airport projects. The new Navi Mumbai International airport will also be added to the list after its completion. On 29 December 2024, IndiGo conducted its first flight validation test at the Navi Mumbai International Airport. After the successful landing, the airline's Airbus A320 aircraft received a traditional water cannon salute, according to a video shared by news agency ANI. Multiple media reports indicated that the airport was poised to start operating in December 2024, but due to infrastructural delays, the date was shifted to the first quarter of the fiscal year 2025-26.

Quadruple Railway Line Proposed Between Karjat And Panvel To Ease Suburban Traffic
Last Updated: With the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport set to drive development in the region, the railway lines will offer faster rail connectivity between Panvel and Karjat In a major move to decongest Mumbai's overburdened suburban rail network, the Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation (MRVC) has proposed a quadruple railway line between Karjat and Panvel. The Rs 492 crore project aims to ease travel for thousands of commuters in Navi Mumbai and Raigad, two regions witnessing rapid urban growth. Currently, the Karjat-Panvel stretch operates with only a single up and down line, leading to frequent delays and severe overcrowding, especially during peak hours. The proposed plan includes adding two new tracks to the existing pair—making it a total of four lines. This expansion will allow simultaneous operation of suburban locals and long-distance trains, thereby improving punctuality and reducing congestion. The project is more than just a solution to daily travel woes. With the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport set to drive further development in the region, the new railway lines will offer seamless and faster rail connectivity between Panvel and Karjat. This is expected to significantly benefit areas like Uran, Navi Mumbai, and the industrial belts nearby. Despite the alignment spanning just 39 kilometres, it passes through several dense green patches, requiring thoughtful environmental assessments. Officials involved in the planning have emphasised the need to ensure minimal ecological disruption while executing the project. Once cleared, the route will also support improved freight movement by freeing up capacity for cargo trains, which currently face delays due to the limited track infrastructure. As pe the source, the blueprint has already been submitted for approval and discussions with both central and state government bodies are at an advanced stage. Budget provisioning, statutory permissions, and tender processes are being fast-tracked to ensure timely implementation. The quadruple line is a key component of Mumbai's larger vision to strengthen its suburban rail infrastructure and reduce the city's growing dependency on road travel. As more residential and commercial hubs emerge in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), particularly towards Karjat and Panvel, efficient public transport becomes critical. Once operational, the project will not only cut down travel time but also enhance safety and comfort for lakhs of daily passengers. With dedicated paths for both passenger and freight trains, the region is set to witness a smoother and more efficient rail experience—bridging the gap between urban expansion and sustainable transport infrastructure. This initiative, when completed, will mark a significant leap toward modernising Mumbai's suburban railways while meeting the demands of a fast-growing city. Rail corridors to expand as MMR develops
MUMBAI: The state's push to develop the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) will see the expansion of the suburban rail corridors on both the Central and Western railways. On the agenda are new lines linking the Navi Mumbai airport with the MMR, separating suburban and long-distance train services, and extending rail connectivity from Dahanu to the proposed Vadhvan port, billed as India's largest port, in Palghar district. The Union Railway Ministry has asked the Central and Western railways to carry out surveys and studies for these new suburban rail lines. On the Central Railway, the ministry wants new lines connecting the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA), the additional lines on the Asangaon-Kasara section, the Badlapur-Karjat section, and to separate suburban and long-distance trains. The ministry also wants a 75-km-long, third rail line on the Panvel-Roha route, on the edge of MMR. On the Western Railway, the railway will survey the Dahanu-Vadhavan Port line for expansion. This is the first time the railways are considering connecting airports with suburban rail lines, alongside the metro rail. Railway sources in Mumbai said they have been asked to survey locations for two separate rail lines connected to NMIA. The first is a 4-km-long line from Khandeshwar station to NMIA on the CSMT-Panvel Harbour Line and the other is a 1-km-long line from Targhar to NMIA on the Seawoods/Belapur-Uran rail corridor. The estimated cost of the survey for the two proposed rail extensions is ₹10 lakh. The railways will also execute two projects to augment capacity. One is the fourth line on the Asangaon-Kasara route, an extension to the ongoing work on the Kalyan-Asangaon line. The Asangaon-Kasara line will be 35-km long and will separate suburban and long-distance trains, thus addressing issues of congestion and delays. Land acquisition for the 32-kms-long Kalyan-Asangaon corridor is underway. Similarly, the Central Railway will study the possibility of adding three to four lines on the Badlapur-Karjat section, which has been approved under the PM Gati Shakti scheme. This rail corridor will be implemented under the Mumbai Urban Transport Project phase-3A at a cost of ₹1,510 crore. It will benefit the towns of Badlapur, Ambarnath and Ulhasnagar as suburban services will increase once suburban and long-distance lines are separated. The railways also plan to link the proposed Vadhavan Port to a rail line from Dahanu. An official with the Western Railway said this would bring long-term benefits as there will also be a dedicated freight corridor near the port.
