Karnataka: Chikkamagaluru forums stage dharna, repent supporting Nayana Motamma in last Assembly polls
Leaders of various progressive forums in Chikkamagaluru district staged a dharna in Chikkamagaluru opposing Congress MLA Nayana Motamma's participation in a programme attended by Pramod Mutalik, founder of Srirama Sene, and others, recently. The leaders assembled at Gandhi Park in the city, under the banner of 'Pragathipara Okkoota', a forum of progressive people, and termed the meeting a 'Pashchathapa Dharani', a meeting to remorse or repent. The participants stated that they felt sorry for supporting Congress candidate Nayana Motamma in the last Assembly polls held in 2023. They gathered in front of Mahatma Gandhi's statue in the park to repent for their act. Nayana Motamma, daughter of former Congress Minister Motamma, was elected to the State assembly on a Congress ticket from the Mudigere constituency in Chikkamagaluru district. The participants maintained that they supported her in the election because she was representing the Congress. However, she recently shared dais with people who spread communal hatred, they said. Pramod Mutalik had been facing many cases for his provocative speeches, and by participating in that programme, the Congress MLA had shown disrespect to the people who supported her, they argued. Raitha Sangha leaders Gurushanthappa and D. Mahesh, Dalit leaders Marle Annaiah and Kuduvalli Manju, and others took part in the dharna. Motamma's statement Staging the dais with Pramod Mutalik at Mudigere recently, Ms. Motamma, who wore a saffron shawl, said that she participated in the programme keeping aside her political affiliation. The question whether she would remain in the Congress or join the BJP would be answered three years later, when her current term ends, she added. Her statements went viral on social media platforms and evoked varied responses.

Congress MLA Nayana Motamma shares dais with Pramod Mutalik, speech in Mudigere goes viral
Shivamogga Mudigere MLA Nayana Motamma's speech at a programme organised by the Hindu Maha Ganapathi Seva Samiti in Mudigere on July 29 has gone viral on social media platforms, and evoked a wide range of reactions in Karnataka. Addressing the gathering, the Congress MLA said that she was participating in the programme as a responsible working president of the organising committee. 'I am attending this programme wearing a saffron shawl. There may be many questions and curiosity among people about my participation. I am here for Lord Ganapati, and the religion (dharma) I belong to, and the party comes next,' she said. She stressed that there should not be any doubt among the people about whether she would join the BJP, the SDPI or the BSP. 'Let's wait for three years to find the answer to those questions,' she said. The MLA maintained that she has always worshipped Lord Ganesha, and watched the Ganesha festival celebrations in Mudigere as a child, and later in Maharashtra. Nayana Motamma, a first-time Congress MLA, shared the dais with Pramod Mutalik, founder of Sri Rama Sene, and M.K. Pranesh, Deputy Chairperson of the Karnataka Legislative Council, at a ceremony to unveil the logo of the Samiti. Video clip goes viral The video clip of her speech has gone viral on social media platforms. Many people have questioned her for sharing a public platform with Pramod Mutalik. On July 30, Nayana Motamma took to social media platforms to clarify that she has clarity on her choices, adding that she would not fit into any box that people wished to place her in.
