Neal Schon may be teasing a Journey offshoot. Here's what we know

Journey guitarist Neal Schon has sparked fan speculation with a cryptic social media post that many believe to be teasing a new offshoot band. Schon shared a blue and pink-hued graphic with the words 'Journey Beyond' to social media on Saturday, Aug. 9, captioning his X post, 'Into the future.' He also appears to have filed to protect the phrase with the United States Patent and Trademark Office. The filing, made in April, notes that the phrase is "intended to cover the categories of musical sound recordings" including downloadable MP3 files, pre-recorded CDs and DVDs featuring music. Though it is still pending approval, Schon's recent post has excited fans of the 'Don't Stop Believin'' hitmakers, whose most recent album 'Freedom' released in 2022 after more than a decade. Many online were quick to point out that Journey Beyond was also the name of a tribute band launched by Joey Belladonna of the New York thrash metal band Anthrax, in 2020. The group was mainly focused on performing the San Francisco band's hits from the 1980s, and was later renamed Beyond Frontiers. It is unclear if Schon's Journey Beyond project is related. This isn't the first time that the musician has attempted to launch an offshoot of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame band. In 2018, he created the group Journey Through Time with his Journey bandmate drummer Deen Castronovo and its former keyboardist Gregg Rolie and former bassist Marco Mendoza. Schon then released the live album 'Journey Through Time' in 2023, pulling from a 2018 benefit concert for North Bay Fire Relief in San Francisco. Journey has had a relatively quiet year, with no major tour on the books and no upcoming shows listed on its website. The band's most recent performances include its 50th anniversary tour in 2024, with no Bay Area shows, and its co-headlining tour with British rock group Def Leppard, which stopped at San Francisco's Oracle Park last August.

Journey's Rock Anthem Continues To Power The Band On The Billboard Charts

Journey's 'Don't Stop Believin'' appears on four Billboard charts as the band's Greatest Hits album ... More climbs again, nearing 850 total weeks on the Billboard 200. (L-R) American rock guitarist, songwriter, and vocalist, Neal Schon, English drummer, Aynsley Dunbar, American singer and keyboardist, Gregg Rolie, American singer and songwriter, Steve Perry and American musician, Ross Valory, of the American rock band Journey, pose for a group portrait circa August, 1978 in San Francisco, California. (Photo by) Journey has enjoyed decades of commercial success at this point, and while the band isn't churning out new hits, the group's catalog continues to remain of great interest to a huge population. The band is back in a big way on multiple Billboard charts, with both a signature song and one of its most successful collections. As has been the case for years now, much of that success is thanks to 'Don't Stop Believin'' — a track that's more than just a fan favorite. It's a true classic, and one of the most successful rock songs in American history, and it's powering the act's continued ascent. Journey's anthem 'Don't Stop Believin'' lands on four Billboard charts this week, and its performance varies wildly depending on which list one is looking at. In the U.S., the track reappears on the Rock Digital Song Sales tally, where it returns at No. 13. The song fares slightly better on the Rock Streaming Songs ranking, keeping to No. 12. 'Don't Stop Believin'' isn't just a hit in America — it's still a global smash as well, as the single continues to place on both of Billboard's worldwide charts. On the Billboard Global Excl. U.S., it rises slightly to No. 128, gaining ground despite the steady influx of new music. At the same time, it slips on the more competitive Billboard Global 200, falling from No. 100 to No. 110. While 'Don't Stop Believin'' is the star of Journey's discography, the band's wider catalog is also enjoying a lift. Greatest Hits – the bestselling compilation that has already made rock history many years ago — rises on three different Billboard tallies at once. On the Top Rock Albums ranking, the title surges from No. 18 to No. 14, edging closer to finding its way to the top 10 once more. It performs nearly as well on the Top Rock & Alternative Albums list, where it lifts from No. 21 to No. 17. Its biggest gain comes on the all-genre Billboard 200, where Greatest Hits leaps 16 spaces, improving from No. 93 to No. 77. That upward movement brings the compilation one frame closer to hitting an exceptionally rare milestone. Greatest Hits is fast approaching 850 total weeks on the Billboard 200 — an almost unheard-of achievement that places it among the longest-charting albums in the ranking's history.

Journey ‘rushed off stage' after electrical fire breaks out mid-concert

Journey was forced to abandon their Friday concert in Houston, Texas, mid-show after an electrical failure caused a fire to break out under the stage. The five-piece rock band was midway through the performance of their 1981 hit song 'Don't Stop Believin'' when the screens around the stage went black and the audio cut out, leaving the crowd to continue belting out the song in their absence, video footage posted by the group's co-founder and lead guitarist, Neal Schon, showed. 'Last night at Houston TX Rodeo we had an amazing overly packed house of 79-80 thousand fans that showed up to see us!!' Schon, 71, said in a Saturday Instagram post. 'The only unfortunate thing was that after getting off to a slamming start the Rodeo had an electrical failure and fire broke out under the stage,' he revealed. 'Thank you Houston for singing 'Don't Stop Believin' before we were rushed off the stage because of an electrical fire and were not able to return. I felt terrible for our fans and offered to play tonight and make it up to y'all but they were not able to make it happen so until next time - Love and Respect.' The Houston Rodeo additionally confirmed on Facebook that 'due to an unforeseen electrical incident under the stage area, we regretfully announce the cancellation of tonight's Journey concert.' 'We sincerely apologize to all fans for this disappointment,' the statement continued. 'Our team is working diligently to assess the situation, and we will provide updates regarding rescheduling options and refunds as soon as possible.' Local news outlet KPRC 2 spoke to a concertgoer who recalled a stadium announcer telling the crowd that there was a 'power outage.' They added that after the band left the stage, several people with fire extinguishers came out to inspect the area around the drums. In an update shared Saturday, the venue said that the issue had been fixed and all events scheduled for later that day would continue as planned. 'We are excited to host RODEOHOUSTON and welcome Warren Zeiders today as scheduled,' read a statement shared to X. 'The stage will be operating as normal, and we will host all activities in the stadium and on the grounds as originally planned.'
