Gadsden County football is in trouble after FHSAA rules violations. What we know
Gadsden County football is in a lot of trouble with the Florida High School Athletic Association. Jaguars coach Russell Ellington and eight unnamed played have been suspended for a year, the school has been fined $21,500 and the football team has been banned from the postseason in 2025. The school can appeal the decision. Much of the issues surrounding the school revolve around non-traditional students and whether the school properly reported them to the state. Here's what we know about non-traditional students, Gadsden County's situation and what's next for the school and the FHSAA. How does the FHSAA define a non-traditional student? According to FHSAA Bylaw 1.4.31, 'Non-Traditional Students are students who are not enrolled in and do not physically attend the school at which they participate. These include home education students, Personalized Education Program (PEP) students, charter school students, approved alternative/special school students, private school students, virtual school students, and traditional public school students.' The FHSAA allows students who attend one school to play a sport at another school if the school they attend does not offer that sport. Does Gadsden County's football team have non-traditional students? Yes. Three of the FHSAA's six violations specially mention non-traditional students. The primary issues are Gadsden County not reporting the players as non-traditional students or allowing them to participate in summer activities without fully completing the non-tradition student registration process. At least some team's players in 2024 attended Tallahassee Academy International. Michael Tunsil, who is listed on public records as the Tallahassee Academy International's manager, was on Gadsden County's sideline during the Class 2A state championship game. Do a lot of Florida football teams have non-traditional students? While 'a lot' is a subjective term, Gadsden County certainly isn't the only one. It's commonplace in Miami for top athletes to attend a school that doesn't offer athletics and play sports at another school. And while it's been happening more in recent years, it's certainly not a new concept. Perhaps the most famous example is Tim Tebow, who was homeschooled but played football at both Trinity Christian and Nease. He led Nease to the Class 4A state championship in 2005. Has Gadsden County appealed the FHSAA findings? The FHSAA sent its findings to Gadsden County on July 25, and the school has 10 business days to file an appeal. According to the FHSAA, as of 8 a.m. July 30, Gadsden County had not yet filed an appeal. Ellington said on July 28 that the school will appeal the decision. Ryan Gear posts 67 at Timuquana to take the first-round lead in Jacksonville Amateur
Ryan Gear of St. Augustine went on a birdie run in the middle of his round and with a 5-under 67, grabbed a one-shot lead in the first round of the Jacksonville Amateur Golf Association Championship in July 24 at the Timuquana Country Club. Gear, who played high school golf at Nease and has followed his father Sean in playing for Embry-Riddle, leads Lance LaCombe of Jacksonville (68) by one shot. Gear began his round at No. 10, was 1-over through five holes, then birdied Nos. 15, 16, 18 and 1, and bounced back from a bogey at the second hole with birdies at Nos. 4 and 7 wrapped around an eagle at the par-5 sixth. LaCombe also had a hot streak during his round. He birdied four of six holes from Nos. 5 through 10, and ended the day with a birdie at No. 18. Past and future North Florida Ospreys in the mix Five players posted 3-under 69, former University of North Florida player Joe Stepnes, Luke Splane of St. Augustine, Colton Swartz of Fleming Island and Cameron Reed and Landon Durham of Ponte Vedra Beach. Splane is a rising senior at St. Augustine High School, Swartz is a junior at Florida Southern and Reed is a freshman at Furman. Five more players are tied at 2-under 70, led by past JAGA champion and former UNF player Jordan Batchelor, UNF sophomore Danny Erickson of Ponte Vedra, incoming UNF freshman Luke Balaskiewicz of Jacksonville, Mercer sophomore Connor Holcroft of Ponte Vedra and Kennesaw State freshman Ryan Nicholson of Ponte Vedra. The temperatures were hot but the scores low for the opening round of the first JAGA Amateur ever played at the historic Donald Ross course. Twenty players are under par. The field will be cut in half after the second round on July 25 and the final round will be July 26. PGA Tour: Who are the First Coast and South Georgia players in Mexico Open field in Vallarta?
The PGA Tour's Mexico Open, which begins Thursday, will be a respite for the world's top players. After a busy West Coast Swing in Hawaii, California and Arizona – including three Signature Events – the field for this week's tournament at VidantaWorld in Vallarta lacks star power, with only three of the top 50 players on the World Golf Ranking in the field, No. 29 Aaron Rai, No. 30 Akshay Bhatia and No. 43 Rasmus Hojgaard. Sam Stevens, at No. 16, is the highest player on the FedEx Cup points list in the field, followed by No. 21 Patrick Rodgers, No. 27 Michael Kim, No. 34 Harry Hall and Bhatia at No. 37. But that leaves numerous opportunities for other players such as Jake Knapp, who won the tournament last year as a rookie. The field includes a pair of Nease graduates making their first PGA Tour starts after long layoffs due to injuries and status: Tyler McCumber (shoulder injury), who last played at the 2024 American Express, and Vince Covello (who has conditional Korn Ferry Tour status), who has played 100 Korn Ferry Tour events and last played on the PGA Tour at the 2020 Wyndham Championship. PGA Tour Champions Tour member Padraig Harrington is playing on a sponsor exemption. Twin brothers Rasmus and Nicolai Højgaard, who also are in the field for the Masters in April. Blades Brown, who turned pro in January at the age of 17 and was the runnerup in the 2024 Junior Players Championship.
