A former Hibs player has his sights on a first Premier League goal after signing a new deal with Sunderland until 2030. The transfer window both in the summer and winter can bring success stories, ones to forget and tales of what could have been. In January 2024, Hibs signed two stars on loan from the Black Cats, who have been promoted to the Premier League ahead of this term, Nectar Triantis and Eliezer Mayenda. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad While Triantis returned after this loan a rampaging midfielder who proved key to the club finishing third in the Premiership last campaign, Mayenda left after four lowkey appearances. He has used time in Leith as a major learning curve though, scoring 10 times with five assists in term 24/25 to cement himself in the Sunderland ranks. The attacker has now been rewarded with a new deal for the long haul and has eyes on a goal at England's top table. Eliezer Mayenda on new Sunderland contract He told club media: 'I'm very happy to be here, everyone knows that. This is my team, my club and my city - it's a special moment for me. Playing at the Stadium of Light is always special. I love playing there and the supporters are amazing. When I hear the fans singing my name, it's so special for me and I always try to give everything on the pitch. 'I try to work every day on the training ground and do my best in every game. I'm very proud to sign this new contract and extend my stay here. I feel ready for the next challenge in the Premier League. I feel good at the moment, and I'll give my best. To score with Sunderland in the Premier League would be so special. I came here when I was 18 years old, now I'm 20. I'm going to work towards that goal.' Why Eliezer Mayenda has signed new Sunderland contract Sporting director Kristjaan Speakman added: 'We are delighted with Eliezer's progress throughout the last two years. Whether you're a supporter, a member of staff, or one of his team-mates, it's been immensely rewarding to follow and support his development to this point. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'Although this is a moment to reflect and celebrate his progress, it is also an opportunity to reset our objectives and expectations. Eli is an important player for us, and his commitment will be significant as we embark upon the Premier League season. He's a great character who understands our Club, and I know our supporters will be delighted by this news.' A club statement adds: 'Sunderland AFC is delighted to announce that Eliezer Mayenda has signed a new long-term contract. Following an unforgettable breakthrough season at the Stadium of Light, the striker has committed his future to the Club until 2030. Mayenda scored 10 goals and contributed five assists last campaign, playing an integral role as Régis Le Bris' side clinched a return to the Premier League following an eight-year absence. A scorer in the Black Cats' semi-final victory over Coventry City, the 20-year-old ended the season by netting at Wembley Stadium in the 2025 Championship Play-Off final to cement his place in Wearside history. Mayenda's domestic efforts also led to deserved international recognition, as he became a Spain Under-21 international earlier this year.'

Derby boss Eustace denies Triantis transfer links
Derby County boss John Eustace says Sunderland midfielder Nectar Triantis is not on his transfer radar despite rumours circulating about a possible move for the Australian."That's not a name I've been speaking about with the club. I think his agent might be putting that out there," Eustace told BBC Radio Derby after the side's 2-0 pre-season victory over Atromitos on Saturday."He's a good player but he's not somebody that, at the moment, we are looking at."The Rams may find themselves a little lighter defensively as they prepare for their opening Championship game against Stoke City on Saturday (15:00 BST), with Eustace unsure if left-back Owen Beck and defender Matt Clarke will be fit in 45-year-old added: "They've had slight injury niggles so we will have to see if they will be available for next week."But Jake Rooney has stepped in, he's done well today."Listen to the full post-match interview with Eustace and more on BBC Sounds.

David Gray names Hibs three stars who can fill Nectar Triantis void
The midfielder return to the Stadium of Light after impressing on loan at Easter Road David Gray insists Hibs can be proud of the platform they gave Nectar Triantis after all but confirming that the midfielder will not be returning to Easter Road. The Leith side were desperate to bring back the 22-year-old following the success of his loan stint from Sunderland last season. Even if the Sydney-born player does not get the chance to feature for the Black Cats in the Premier League, Triantis wants a fresh challenge with clubs from the English Championship, MLS and mainland European all interested. And despite facing a losing battle in his bid to re-sign Triantis as Hibs prepare for tonight's crunch second leg against Midtjylland, Gray insists there are no hard feelings. He said: 'We've also been very clear that it's not just Nectar Triantis, we can't put everything into one position or one player. 'So the hard work has been going on and whilst it was still a potential opportunity, you'd always look to try and explore it because of how well he'd done. 'But it was always going to be that with it being his second loan spell here, how well he'd done, his parent club getting promoted and what his situation was going to be. 'He was a pleasure to work with, that was one of the reasons why we wanted to bring him back in the first place. 'He's a real humble, hard working boy that's constantly trying to improve all the time and as a coach that's what you want as a dream to work with. 'I'm the head coach I've judged every week at 5 o'clock and what the result is, that's the immediate job is to win games of football. 'But my job title and my first thing is to make sure I improve every single player every day if you can, and make sure every player feels like they're improving all the time. 'Nector's a positive example of someone who came in, found a new position and has certainly improved over 12 months and that's a lot of hard work from everybody involved and the group of players he's working with.' And Gray insists he will not necessarily need a like-for-like replacement with midfielders Jamie McGrath and Josh Mulligan having already arrived this summer. He added: 'We've got a lot of quality in there currently in the building which is great. 'We've added to that as well with Jamie and Josh that can play centrally and still got Joe Newell to come back, he's someone that's been out for a significant period.'

Signing a new central midfielder remains a priority for Hibs before the transfer window closes, but their hopes of last season's loanee Nectar Triantis returning from Sunderland are now extremely slim. Triantis was nominated for Scotland's player of the year after becoming a key part of a Hibs team that finished third the Premiership. He was a stand-out in the No 6 role and while Hibs were prepared to pay a significant amount of money to land the 22-year-old on a permanent deal, it appears his future lies elsewhere. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Triantis has two years left on his Sunderland deal and is expected to either leave on loan or be transferred, with a host of clubs in England and beyond monitoring his situation. The Australian has spent the past two seasons in Scotland and it has been reported that both he and his representatives want to step up a level. Hibs head coach David Gray loved working with Nectar Triantis last season. | SNS Group Hibs will now turn their attentions to other targets, with head coach David Gray wanting to add depth to the No 6 role in his 3-5-2 formation. Speaking on Triantis in his pre-match press conference ahead of the Europa League second qualifying round second leg against Danish side Midtjylland, Gray said: 'If that's the lie of the land, I think I've been very consistent. We've also been very clear that it's not just Nectar Triantis, we can't put everything into one position or one player, we know that. 'Clear focus' 'So the hard work has been going on and whilst it was still a potential opportunity, you'd always look to try and explore it because of how well he'd done. But it was always going to be that with it being, you know, his second loan spell here, how well he'd done, his parent club getting promoted and what his situation was going to be. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'So I think that was always going to be the case naturally, so we are constantly looking to see what can be done to try and improve the squad - but clearly my full focus right this minute in time is tomorrow night and the game.' Hibs are in action on Thursday against Midtjylland. | SNS Group Gray says he will take great pride in how Triantis has performed and developed under his watch. 'I think that's something that one thing I would always say, he was a pleasure to work with, that was one of the reasons why we wanted to bring him back in the first place,' the head coach continued. He's a real humble, hard working boy that's constantly trying to improve all the time and as a coach that's what you want as a dream to work with, and he's said a few times now how grateful he is for the opportunity it has because you're only as good as your teammates round about you and he had such a good season last year.

Gray coy on Triantis return
David Gray says a return to Hibs for Nectar Triantis was always a "potential opportunity" but insists the club have other transfer targets to pursue if a move doesn't reports suggesting Triantis won't be returning to the club this summer from Sunderland, Gray remained coy but was keen to emphasise he is not their only transfer target."If that's what the lie of the land is…" Gray commented on the added: "I think I've been very consistent in saying that, quite clearly, Nectar has done so well for us last season, we know that."We've also been very clear that it's not just Nectar Triantis, we can't put everything into one position or one player, we know that, so the hard work has been going on."And while it was still a potential opportunity, you'd always look to try and explore it because of how well he'd done. But it was always going to be that, with it being his second loan spell here, how well he'd done, his parent club getting promoted and what his situation was going to be."Naturally, so we are constantly looking to see what can be done to try and improve the squad, but clearly my focus right now is tomorrow night and the game."Gray also said new recruits Jamie McGrath and Josh Mulligan's previous Scottish football experience has been key to their immediate impact at the Aberdeen midfielder McGrath scored in the first-leg win over Midtjylland last week and ex-Dundee player Mulligan also made his debut, with Hibs hosting the Danes tomorrow night in a tie locked at 1-1."It's been great. Clearly they were playing in our league last year so you can get a sense of what they're like pretty quickly," said Gray."They are two quality players that can add straight away to what we're looking to do and then I also think that's a reflection on the group that have been here, the core that welcome new players, make them settle quickly."Gray also said he won't rush record signing Klidje into action, adding: "There is not too much expectation from me in terms of demand to try and get him minutes straight away."
