Egypt develops national database to localize automotive industry - Economy

Egypt's Ministry of Industry and Transport has begun developing a comprehensive national database to map the key demands, challenges, and opportunities tied to localizing the automotive industry, Minister Kamel El-Wazir said in a statement on Sunday. The initiative was unveiled during a high-level meeting between Minister El-Wazir and leading automotive and components manufacturers. It aims to fast-track industrial integration and reduce reliance on imported vehicle parts. The move comes as part of Egypt's broader strategy to boost domestic manufacturing and position itself as a regional hub for automotive production. 'The database will serve as a strategic tool for aligning national capabilities with the technical needs of global automakers, bridging supply gaps, and ensuring targeted support for priority industries,' said El-Wazir, who also serves as the deputy prime minister for industrial development. During the meeting, the minister also revealed that automotive feeder industries not currently produced locally will be added to the list of 28 promising sectors eligible for additional investment incentives under the government's industrial development framework. The ministry plans to present preliminary findings from the database during the upcoming 'Negative Exhibition,' part of the 'Industry and Transport Together for Sustainable Development' expo scheduled for November 2025. The exhibition is designed to connect manufacturers with unmet local production needs and identify alternatives to costly imports. El-Wazir also revealed that he will soon lead a series of field visits to key feeder industry factories to assess production capabilities and identify technical challenges on the ground. The visits aim to introduce practical solutions for strengthening local supply chains and increasing production inputs that align with international standards. Industry representatives welcomed the move, affirming their readiness to collaborate with the government to overcome existing hurdles, especially the scarcity of locally sourced raw materials, and expand their manufacturing footprints. The database and related measures are expected to significantly contribute to the government's goal of deepening industrial integration, enhancing competitiveness, and securing Egypt's place in the global automotive supply chain, according to the statement.
