Meet the inventor taking on bike crime

Professor Neil Barron knows how gut-wrenching it can be to have a bicycle stolen. Having already had two pinched, he bought an old steel-framed Raleigh bike in the hope it wouldn't be so appealing to thieves. But, despite having carefully locked it up, it was soon taken. 'I was really upset, because I actually did get quite attached to it,' says Barron. Most cyclists can relate: according to one recent UK study, 70 per cent have had at least one bike stolen. Often beloved, they rarely make it back to their rightful owners. But unlike other cyclists, who often feel helpless against determined thieves, Barron's skill set meant he was able to do something about it. A former Rolls-Royce engineer, he has three degrees in design and engineering and taught product development to university students.

The resulting Litelok range, incorporating the company's patented technology, is designed to withstand even attacks by thieves using angle grinders. The business, which began life in Swansea in 2013 with seed investing by Barron's long-time friend and business partner Will Riley, 59, racked up sales of £5.2 million last year.
