'Another Howson is hard to find'
Former Middlesbrough midfielder Neil Maddison said that Jonny Howson will be "a big miss" after his departure from the defensive midfielder was not given a new deal after the conclusion of his contract last season, bringing an end to his eight-year tenure with the club."When Jonny was in the side, you felt more comfortable. When you were going through a bad run and he comes into the side, it all disappears. You seem to be a better side," Maddison told BBC Radio Tees."Those players are hard to find."I think he'll be sorely missed, certainly in terms of galvanising the team when they need to try and get that win or try to get back into the game. He was a perfect fit for the team."As far as whether age was catching up to the veteran, Maddison added: "Even at the ripe old age of 37, I still think he can perform and he can fill in positions as well. Those players are important."I still felt he had a little bit to offer."Listen to the full analysis of Jonny Howson's departure and more on BBC Sounds.

'The games that mean something have disappeared'
With rivals Leeds United and Sunderland rising to the Premier League, former Middlesbrough midfielder Neil Maddison feels that this season may seem lacking for Boro when it comes to the big derby game atmosphere."When you talk about games, fixtures, coming up that mean something, they've kind of disappeared," Maddison told BBC Radio Tees."The nearest one now, is it Hull? Or Sheffield Wednesday?"It's a little bit of a disappointment that you haven't got a team that there's a little bit of a rivalry for both sets of fans. But it is what it is."Middlesbrough missed out on a play-off spot in May, concluding their 2024-25 campaign in 10th place in the Championship Maddison believes the side will be looking to make amends with a better run this season, he also thinks there will be some dangerous teams looking to do the same."For me, the teams that missed out this season will be eager to get into the top six. Obviously, the teams that have come down will always be favourites to come back up, rightfully so," Maddison added."I think Norwich will be strong, I think they will come good."There will be a few clubs that will be aiming and trying to get into that mix and we will certainly be one of them - otherwise, what's the point?"Listen to the full reaction and more on BBC Sounds.

🎧 'Not reaching play-offs was failure by Carrick'
Middlesbrough's failure to reach the Championship play-offs is what ultimately cost Michael Carrick his is the view of Boro's BBC Radio Tees commentator Mark Drury and former midfielder Neil Maddison."Since they got to the play-offs, it's a story of regression," Drury told BBC Radio Tees. "Basically, that's it. Boro have been going backwards. This season in isolation was a massive failure."To not reach the play-offs this season with the squad that had been assembled last August, with the make-up of the Championship as it was - to not get there was a failure and it was a big one."Maddison agreed and said the club have "gone backwards" since they lost 1-0 on aggregate to Coventry in the play-off semi-final in May 2023."There were so many factors leading up to why it hasn't been a successful season," Maddison said."There wasn't enough. For me this season, it's one of those where I haven't really enjoyed watching us in terms of the football, the results."Go back to his [Carrick's] first season, I've never seen anything like it. It's the best football I've seen at the Riverside in my opinion. It was so exciting."But since then, we have gone backwards. And if you don't push on, this is the outcome."Listen to Mark Drury and Neil Maddison's full discussion with host Rob Law about Carrick's sacking on BBC Sounds.
