‘Singing Nazi anthem, doing the salute': student faces antisemitism

A 14-year-old Melbourne high school student says she has been driven from the public education system after being taunted with Nazi salutes and swastikas by classmates at two different schools. Neta Cameron, whose family members were victims of the Holocaust, said she experienced antisemitic bullying at Rowville Secondary College and Alkira Secondary College in Cranbourne, with mixed responses from school authorities. The teenager said the bullying at Rowville – where she had moved in year 7, drawn by the school's acting lessons – made her feel 'isolated and ashamed' with daily 'Heil Hitlers', 'sometimes directed towards me and sometimes not'. 'I would hear kids joke about Hitler, the gas chambers and the Holocaust,' she said. Loading 'There were swastikas carved and drawn all over the tables and even on walls.' She questioned whether the students knew what the Holocaust was. 'In year 8, I had a scrunched-up piece of paper thrown to me. When I opened it, it had swastikas all over the page.' Neta said the abuse increased after Hamas' October 7, 2023 attack on Israel and antisemitism became normalised to the extent that she 'couldn't count' the number of children making inappropriate remarks.
