Descendant of Frederick Douglass and Booker T. Washington visits Springfield
SPRINGFIELD, Mass (WWLP) – For Black History Month, a family member of a prominent figure in history was at the Springfield Museum of History. 22News had the opportunity to talk with Nettie Washington Douglass, the great-great-granddaughter of Frederick Douglass and great-granddaughter of Booker T. Washington. Nettie is also a co-founder of the Frederick Douglass Family Initiatives, continuing the efforts of her ancestors. Frederick Douglass was an American abolitionist and often said to be the most important leader in the African-American Civil Rights movement. Douglass was in Springfield Massachusetts in 1847 when he was meeting with John Brown, another abolitionist. Booker T. Washington was an American educator, author and also the founder of Tuskegee University in 1881, an institution for higher education for black students. 'Learning something new, I love it. It actually brings tears to my eyes. Knowing what I do know that he did and then learning what I didn't know, it is like 'Oh my goodness'. It just warms my heart, it really really does. and I love to be able to go to places that he went, and as they say 'walk in his shoes', big shoes!,' said Nettie Washington Douglass. Nettie who is in her 80's said she is constantly learning more stories about her famous ancestors. In just her first couple of hours today in Springfield Massachusetts, Nettie learned about the connection between Booker T. Washington and a man named Samuel Courtney. Together they founded the National Negro League. Nettie is the evening's keynote speaker at the Keeper of the Dreams dinner at Westfield State University, which is an annual event to celebrate Black History Month.
