Horse racing: Jesko the jumper starts new season with huge victory

The new season of jumps racing commenced at Whanganui on Sunday, and it came as little surprise that the country's leading hoop in Shaun Fannin was straight on the board, taking the Dr John D. Moore Memorial Open Steeplechase aboard his own Jesko. Since stepping into training in a larger capacity with wife Hazel Fannin, Shaun Fannin has lessened his riding commitments but maintains his partnership with champion jumper West Coast, who has largely contributed to his outstanding strike rate of 1.2, riding five winners from six rides during the 2024/25 term. The Fannins have a couple of their own jumpers coming through the ranks, including Jesko, who impressed when breaking his maiden over the hurdles in June last year. He didn't feature again over the fences in that campaign, but kicked off this preparation with a tidy win on the flat, before a fourth placing behind an in-form Never Look Back at Woodville. In his debut steeplechasing assignment, Jesko was a heavily-backed favourite, closing at $1.40 ahead of Verry Royal ($5.20). The gelding settled into a good rhythm early in the 3800m contest, where Al's Red Zed took control early and led the field through the opening lap ahead of Call Me Jack. Fannin remained in touch with the leaders as pressure began to ramp up along the back stretch, moving into a clear third when Verry Royal dislodged Dean Parker on landing at the fence by the 900m. Call Me Jack shook off Al's Red Zed turning for home but Jesko was simply cruising, flying the final two fences to race away by an extending five-and-three-quarter lengths.

Limerick author's twist-filled new novel unfolds on Treaty City streets

'I was having these nightmares all the time,' Karen says, reflecting on the early days of COVID-19. 'Planes crashing, trains crashing, the world blowing up, because we just didn't know what was happening. 'One night I dreamt my daughter, who lived in Madrid at the time, wasn't communicating with me, so I showed up at her door and there was a baby in her arms. I brought them both to the airport to go home, and she just vanished in the crowd, leaving me alone with her daughter,' Karen recalls. That eerie visual became the heart of her upcoming novel, which centres on the mysterious disappearance of a young mother at Limerick's Colbert Station and marks the return of Private Investigator Lana Bowen to solve the case. A Limerick resident for nearly three decades, Karen grounds her fiction firmly in the streets she knows so well. 'I've been living in the city for almost 30 years, walking it, running it, I know all the little side streets,' she explains. 'It was important to me to capture that.' This authenticity is something readers have come to appreciate, particularly for those who call Limerick home. Her writing process, by contrast, is far from methodical. 'In every other part of my life, I plan everything. But when I write, there's no plan at all,' she chuckles. 'I just sit and make myself write a certain number of words, four days a week.' That freedom fuels her creativity, even if the plot often unravels into chaos that needs careful stitching together. The development of Never Look Back, the second instalment of a three-part series, was no exception. 'Twists, I love them,' she smiles, 'but you've got to untwist them,' she adds. 'I think I drove my editor nuts last summer. We had to untangle everything. It took weeks!' ADVERTISEMENT That editor is Gaye Shortland, a veteran in the industry since 1998, who Karen describes as 'the biggest gift of all' from her publishing journey. 'She won't let anything go if it doesn't make sense. I've learned so much from her,' Karen states. The novel itself took four months to draft, just like her first, but the road to publication was far longer. 'I started writing it in September 2021,' she explains. 'I'd already had rejections for my premiere novel, The World's End, and I became kind of cross. I thought to myself, 'You think it'll be easier than it is', but it's not.' And yet, the Casteconnell native persevered. 'There's always a solution to writer's block. Even if you're walking the dog or out shopping. Something clicks and you go, 'That's it.'' Her storytelling is layered with shadowy clues and red herrings that leaves the reader 'guessing all the time.' The Limerick arts scene has been a rock of support to Karen during her writing journey. Deeply involved in local theatre, including with Northside Misfits, Southill Community Drama Group, St Saviour's, Thomond Studio, and more, Karen says: 'They've all been amazing. So many of them were at the launch last year, and they're excited again this year. Working with them, creating plays, characters and fixing plot holes, it taught me I could write a book.' Never Look Back is set to hit the shelves of O'Mahony's Booksellers on May 8, 2025.

Pip Edwards SIZZLES in a daring black dress as the P.E Nation founder celebrates her 45th birthday

Pip Edwards put on quite the daring display on Saturday as she prepared to celebrate her 45th birthday. The P.E Nation founder took to Instagram to show off her birthday attire to her 196,000 followers. Pip flaunted her svelte frame in a form-fitting black dress from Sydney designer Michael Lo Sordo. The risqué garment featured a plunging neckline that extended past the blonde beauty's navel. The dress also showed off Pip's decolletage and, finishing mid-thigh, her lender and toned pins, as well. Pip wore her blonde locks down foe the occasion, which brushed against her shoulders as she posed for the fit-check selfies. The fashionista accessorised simply, choosing to adorn her wrists with some gold bling. She finished her outfit with a pair of strappy black heels that featured an eye-catching silver bow embellishment at the toe. Pip followed up the selfies with a shot that showed her preparing to dine at Paddington Eatery 10 William St. The image showed a long dining table, festooned with a number of wine glasses, suggesting Pip would be in good company on her birthday. Pip's 'soul sister' Jackie O Henderson took some time out on Saturday to pay a special tribute to her bestie. Jackie, who is currently enjoying an idyllic Italian getaway with her daughter Kitty, 14, took to Instagram to share a collage of she and Pip enjoying each other's company. Captioning the sweet images, the radio queen said that the pair's strong friendship was always meant to be. 'From the moment we met, we just knew we were destined to be great friends,' Jackie wrote. 'Happy birthday my beautiful @pipedwards I wish I was there to celebrate with you.' Jackie continued to gush about her bestie, adding: 'You're my little soul sister angel. I'm so proud of who u are & all you've achieved. 'Here's to many more nights filled with our deep chats. Love you so much.' It comes as Pip was welcomed back into Australia on Friday by her mother and father Gloria and Barrie. The Ksubi creative director and her 18-year-old son Justice have spent the past week undergoing an 'equilibrium of health' programme on an island near Bangkok. In addition to a lengthy summary of her time at RAKxa, an 'incredible integrative wellness retreat', Pip shared an image of a scarcely seen tattoo on the back of her neck to Instagram this week. The cursive tattoo, which is not new, says, 'Never Look Back.' It is written in the same cursive font as her more 'this must be the place' tattoo underneath her bicep – a nod to the beloved Talking Heads' song. 'I set out to take this time to be in a bubble of health with my son, but it's been so much more than that,' she added.

Totally wild! Pip Edwards rocks leopard print pants as she touches down in Sydney after idyllic wellness retreat in Thailand

Pip Edwards has been enjoying a pamper filled wellness retreat in Thailand with son Justice. But it was back to reality for the P.E Nation founder, who was spotted touching down at Sydney airport on Saturday. The 44 year old was not afraid to show off her 'animal magnetism' stepping out in a pair of black and white leopard print pants. She augmented the eye catching garment with a black leather belt with an embossed silver buckle that cinched her svelte waist. The fashionista also wore a plain white tank top for the trip, that showed off her toned and bronzed arms. Pip finished her look with a pair of well-worn sneakers, choosing to wear her blonde locks back for the flight. She accessorised with a $6,000 Chanel handbag that she carried over her shoulder and some subtle bling in her ears. Pip also carried a large black jacket in her arms along with a large black suitcase that featured the P.E Nation logo emblazoned across the front. Justice, 18, meanwhile looked casual in a pair of blue shorts and a white T-Shirt, accessorising with a pair of white headphones perched atop his head. Pip looked quite relaxed and refreshed as she made her way through the airport, obviously rejuvenated after her idyllic vacation. The mother and son duo were welcomed back into Australia by Pip's parents Gloria and Barrie, who were waiting dutifully for their daughter and grandson to arrive. The group looked chuffed to be in each other's company again, happily hugging and kissing as they joyfully reunited. It appears that Pip's mother Gloria received the fashion memo as she was also spotted wearing an eye-catching animal print jacket. Dad Barrie, meanwhile was happy to help his daughter with her bags, dutifully wheeling a silver suitcase to the car. Pip Edwards' secret tattoo revealed as she escapes to wellness retreat in Thailand amid news her P.E Nation flagship store in Sydney has closed

Pip Edwards has given a rare look at her tattoos while completing a White Lotus-esque wellness retreat in Thailand. 'Breathe properly and deeply - but truly understanding the connection of my breath to my physical, my mental and my spiritual. 'Give your body and yourself the love and attention it deserves. Maybe I'm writing this just to remind myself to slow down more often, in order to maintain my fast pace!' Justice's father Dan Single, 44, also has a tribute tattoo to their son on his arm. It comes amid news that Pip's activewear brand P.E Nation have announced the closure of their flagship store. The store at The Galeries shopping centre, on George Street in Sydney 's CBD will open its doors for the last time on Thursday, April 24. P.E Nation announced the news on Instagram reassuring customers the closure did not mark the end of the brand. The Australian brand shared an image on Tuesday from inside one of their stores with the words: 'We're on the move!' Announcing the closure, a statement read: 'A big thank you to everyone who visited, supported us, and became part of our community - you made it special. 'While we're saying goodbye to this space, it's just the start of a new chapter.' The activewear and athleisure women's brand confirmed their stores in Westfield Miranda and Bondi Junction remained open. Westfield Miranda is the home of the newest branch of the brand, opening earlier this year in February. P.E Nation was founded by Pip Edwards and Claire Greaves back in 2016 in Bondi. The friends founded the activewear brand after working together at Australian label Sass & Bride. Ms Edwards stepped down as creative director in August last year following a successful relaunch of the women's clothing brand. Co-founder Ms Greaves had stepped back from the day-to-day running of the company five months earlier. Both co-founders retain their shareholding and board positions.
