NYC will get its first-ever booze-free members club this fall
In a city where cocktails and clubhouses often go hand in hand, one entrepreneur is daring to rewrite the social script. This fall, New York will welcome The Maze, a first-ever alcohol-free members club, offering all the elegance and exclusivity of the downtown social scene, just minus the booze. Located at 43 West 24th Street in Flatiron, The Maze is a 4,600-square-foot sanctuary for connection, creativity and yes, mocktails, though this isn't some hokey dry lounge. The vibe is more 'boutique hotel meets conscious community' than anything else, with a stylish New American restaurant, high-end coffee bar, flexible event spaces and lounges designed for actual conversation (imagine that). Founder Justin Gurland, a 17-year-sober entrepreneur and licensed Master Social Worker, is on a mission to prove that sobriety doesn't have to mean isolation or sacrifice. 'We're not just removing alcohol—we're reimagining what it means to belong," Gurland said. "We're excited to bring The Maze to the city, offering a welcoming space where people can pursue more meaningful experiences, supporting intentional living and personal growth. It's a place where you can thrive without the pressures of traditional socializing, embracing a lifestyle centered around mindfulness and purpose." That ethos threads through everything The Maze is building. From its sleek design (courtesy of OPA Architecture and Laube Studio) to its curated programming, the goal is to offer a social experience rooted in intention. Expect networking events, community-building mixers and the monthly Cornerstone Dinner, a signature event designed to spark connection without needing a drink in hand. While some might say New York is oversaturated with velvet ropes and vodka sodas, The Maze offers a genuinely refreshing alternative: a place where wellness, recovery and ambition sit at the same table. It's a new model for mindful socializing that speaks to the growing demand for alcohol-free environments that are high on sophistication rather than sacrifice.

Six Sevier County restaurants named among top family friendly restaurants in U.S.
SEVIER COUNTY, Tenn. (WATE) — Whether you're planning a vacation in Sevier County this summer or looking for a family-friendly restaurant to visit for Mother's Day, six Sevier County restaurants have made Yelp's list of the Top 100 Family-Friendly Restaurants in 2025. The list was released on Tuesday, with one Pigeon Forge restaurant making the top 10. When comparing restaurants, Yelp looked for spots that went beyond coloring books to offer more playful options for children, picnic style vibes where adults can relax while their kids run around safely, and places offering fresh, healthy options. The Local Goat is a 'New American' restaurant with a scratch-made kitchen on the Parkway in Pigeon Forge. According to Yelp, the restaurant sources local and sustainable items for their menu, so 'you won't find high-fructose corn syrup, hormones, antibiotics, or GMOs.' The Local Goat also made Yelp's Top 100 Burger Spots in the U.S. list in 2023. In addition to the kids menu that has several options that are picky-eater friendly, the restaurant offers a variety of burgers, pasta, seafood, steaks and more for more mature tastes. The restaurant also has several gluten free options for those with gluten sensitivities. With Pigeon Forge being a busy area that sees quite a bit of tourist traffic, those looking to make reservations ahead of time can visit the Local Goat's website or call ahead. While the Pigeon Forge location made the list, there is also a second Local Goat restaurant in Ootlewah, directly off of Highway 75. Farther down the Parkway, in Sevierville, Five Oaks Farm Kitchen serves up classic barbecue and American southern dishes with fresh produce, quality beef and local pork. For those ages 10 and under, the restaurant has two kids menus, one for breakfast and another for lunch and supper. In addition to lunch and supper menus with a variety of options, Five Oaks Farm Kitchen also has a two-page gluten free menu, a desert menu, and menus for large groups. Those planning ahead of time can also join the waitlist. For breakfast fanatics, Gatlinburg has a specialty breakfast option on the Parkway that is also family-friendly. Crockett's Breakfast Camp serves breakfast from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. every day. From 'Hen Fruit' (eggs) to pancakes, French toast and biscuits, there are plenty of options for breakfast. Those with a sweet tooth may also be delighted to know that they offer giants cinnamon rolls and a fried cinnamon roll. Tucked off the Parkway on Old Mill Avenue, the Old Mill Restaurant serves hearty Southern classics every day. From breakfast classics to southern style chicken and pot roast to burgers, catfish and steaks. If you're looing for a place to take a stroll after the meal, the Old Mill Restaurant is also located near several other Old Mill themed shops, including the Old Mill Square and Old Forge Plaza shopping malls and Pigeon River Pottery, which is just a few doors down from the Old Mill Pottery House Cafe & Grill. Repairs to historic Old Mill Bridge in Pigeon Forge facing delays If you're looking for a fun show while you enjoy an all-you-can-eat dinner, one Dollywood Dinner Show made Yelp's list of family-friendly restaurants. In addition to a feast of home-cooked fried chicken, barbecue, mashed potatoes, homemade bread and more, the Hatfield & McCoy Dinner Feud features singing, dancing, students and comedy. While the meal is a ticketed event, children 2 years old and younger are free if they sit in a parent's lap and eat from their plate. Ahead of their scheduled showtime, guests are encouraged to arrive an hour in advance to pick up their tickets and enjoy the pre-show entertainment. The Blue Moose has several East Tennessee locations, but the one in Pigeon Forge made Yelp's list of the top family-friendly restaurants. The locally-owned restaurant was also voted Travelers' Choice's #1 Burger and Wings location in 2022. The family-friendly sports bar serves up a variety of jumbo wings, burgers, sandwiches, and salads. For those who can't get enough of Blue Moose Burgers & Wings, a new location has been announced for Gatlinburg. The restaurant's website says the location is coming to Gatlinburg on May 12, 2025. One other Tennessee restaurant also made the list: Nectar Urban Cantina in Nashville. The shop serves up Mexican-inspired cuisine and has outdoor seating, along with a backyard space where they host hangouts including specific kid's nights. An upscale switcheroo: Mesa Provisions to fill space left by departing Zinc Wine Bar & Bistro
Apr. 21—After more than two decades of service in Nob Hill, a fine dining staple is passing the torch, and its location on Central, to another local restaurant on the rise. Zinc Wine Bar & Bistro opened in 2003, serving fine cuisine items such as seared ahi tuna, crispy duck confit eggrolls and mussels at 3009 Central NE. The owners took to social media on Wednesday to announce the eatery would be closing in May. "We have truly loved every second of being a part of the Nob Hill community. We've poured our hearts into creating this space and serving you, and we are incredibly grateful," the owners wrote. The restaurant's final day will be May 17. The 7,000-square-foot space, comprised of a 120-seat dining room and an 85-seat cellar bar, will welcome Mesa Provisions, an upscale New American restaurant currently at 3120 Central SE, said Zinc co-owner Keith Roessler. Roessler reached out to Mesa Provisions' owner and chef, Steve Riley, in January after some reconfigurations in ownership called for a change. Zinc's original team of owners included Roessler and his wife, Lynn Roessler, twin brother Kevin Roessler and his wife, Catharina Roessler, and chef Chris Pope. Pope informed the Roesslers last year of his intention to retire, prompting them to search for a new chef and partner. After one option fell through, the team, which grew to include Adam Ybarra and Bailie Schmidt roughly two years ago, originally reached out to Riley with the desire to partner up. Conversations between the two revealed that Riley already had an established team he didn't want to depart from. However, Mesa Provisions had outgrown its current 1,900-square-foot space and was in a position to move into a bigger space. "We had a lot of success for 22 years, and here comes somebody who's got a great young team," Roessler said, adding he sees a lot of himself and his team in Riley and his crew. "He's got a long reservation list and a buzz going about him, and he's super creative and energetic and passionate. It just worked out." Roessler said this isn't "a bankruptcy closing," noting the bistro is debt-free and profitable with low overhead costs. In 2002, the Zinc team put more than $1 million into renovating the space, which Roessler said is "turnkey" today. "We could probably put it on the market publicly and make a lot of money potentially, but it just seemed like this was a great fit," Roessler said, adding it made sense to lease the space to an accomplished individual looking to expand. Riley, a 2024 finalist for the James Beard Foundation's Best Chef Southwest, started Mesa Provisions in 2021. The move to the Zinc space will allow Mesa Provisions to expand its liquor offerings from just beer and wine to cocktails and a full bar experience; offer both reservations and walk-ins; and do more private events, Riley said. Mesa Provisions' team of 19 employees will also grow to between 30 and 35 employees, possibly more, Riley said. Some of Zinc's roughly 25 employees will interview with Riley, while the rest will move on to different ventures or go to Keith Roessler's other restaurants, including Albuquerque's Seasons Rotisserie & Grill and Savoy Bar & Grill, as well as Taos' The Gorge Bar & Grill and Parcht. Roessler said he and his family will continue tending to their other restaurants, while also "saying yes to a few more things, like fly fishing." He hopes the new space will help Riley expand Mesa Provisions' reach. "We're very excited to be able to do a lot of things that previously were just out of our ability to be able to do," Riley said. "My biggest excitement is really being able to have a little more freedom to kind of do whatever we want." Mesa Provisions will begin moving into the Zinc space in May and will complete some minor renovations with the aim of opening in August.
