Protests against Avelo Airlines' deportation flights continue at Wilmington Airport
Protests against Avelo Airlines' role in deportations persist nationwide, especially here in Delaware. Avelo is the only commercial airline that flies from Wilmington Airport near New Castle. It recently added flights to Jacksonville, Florida, and Raleigh, North Carolina, to 12 other cities. Since 2022, the airline has expanded its operations in Delaware as it gains popularity. Earlier this year, the airline announced that it agreed to a deal with Immigration and Customs Enforcement to help with deportation flights out of Arizona. This has rubbed a lot of Delawareans the wrong way, and many say they will not use the airline until it stops the service. Since the announcement, crowds have gathered outside of Wilmington Airport to protest the airline's move. On May 31, a few dozen protesters in Delaware were a part of a nationwide movement at other airports serving Avelo. It wasn't as large of a rally as the first protest in April, but the message has not changed. "It's very scary what's happening to our country, especially sending innocent people to who knows where at this point in time without due process," said Sheri Swanson, a 77-year-old from Pike Creek, at the protest. "It's not the American way." This protest comes right after the Department of Homeland Security listed Delaware as a whole, New Castle County, Newark and Camden as "sanctuary jurisdictions" that are "deliberately and shamefully obstructing the enforcement of federal immigration laws endangering American communities." The executive order threatens any kind of federal funding or grants for any places on the list. The list was made at the direction of an executive order from President Donald Trump. Protesters outside of the airport remain committed to boycotting Avelo and Trump's immigration policies. "(It's a) very Delaware-specific thing, or we could hopefully have an economic impact on them and make them feel like it's not such a great deal for them," said Debbie Silverman, a 63-year-old from Wilmington, at the airport. The median home in New Castle County listed for $409,950 in April, up 5.1% from the previous month's $389,900, an analysis of data from shows. Compared to April 2024, the median home list price decreased 8.8% from $449,250. The statistics in this article only pertain to houses listed for sale in New Castle County, not houses that were sold. Listings in New Castle County moved briskly, at a median 29 days listed compared to the April national median of 50 days on the market. In the previous month, homes had a median of 34 days on the market. Around 604 homes were newly listed on the market in April, an 8.2% increase from 558 new listings in April 2024. The median home prices issued by may exclude many, or even most, of a market's homes. The price and volume represent only single-family homes, condominiums or townhomes. They include existing homes, but exclude most new construction as well as pending and contingent sales. Across the Philadelphia-Camden-Wilmington metro area, median home prices rose to $375,000, slightly higher than a month earlier. The median home had 8,846 square feet, at a list price of $0.13 per square foot. In Delaware, median home prices were $489,950, a slight increase from March. The median Delaware home listed for sale had 1,980 square feet, with a price of $0.14 per square foot. Throughout the United States, the median home price was $431,250, a slight increase from the month prior. The median American home for sale was listed at 467,514 square feet, with a price of $0.18 per square foot. The median home list price used in this report represents the midway point of all the houses or units listed over the given period of time. Experts say the median offers a more accurate view of what's happening in a market than the average list price, which would mean taking the sum of all listing prices then dividing by the number of homes sold. New Castle County apartments for rent saw essentially no changes in April
Renters in New Castle County saw apartment listing prices essentially unchanged from March's average of $1,439, an analysis of new data from Apartment List shows. The average apartment listed for rent at $1,440 in April. Average listing prices in New Castle County are trending slightly upward from March's $1,439 price, up 0.6% from this time last year. The data is inclusive of all bedroom sizes, from studios to three-bedroom units, so while it is a good indicator of how rents are moving in the area, it does not include single-family homes for rent, said Chris Salviati, senior housing economist for Apartment List. DELAWARE DATA: Learn more about the First State One-bedroom apartments listed to rent at an average of $1,231, nearly the same as March, when they were $1,229. Since last year, one-bedroom rental prices rose 0.6% from $1,224. Two-bedroom apartments listed for rent were basically flat to March at an average of $1,469, compared with $1,467. Since last year, two-bedroom rental prices rose 0.6% from $1,460. Statewide, Delaware rental listing prices are very close to March's average of $1,467. In Delaware, one-bedroom rentals were listed for an average of $1,240, essentially the same as March's average of $1,238. Two-bedroom rental listing prices are nearly the same as March's average of $1,460. In New Castle County, the average apartment listed for rent is 2% below the state average. One-bedroom rentals were 1% below the state average, while two-bedrooms listed slightly higher. Nationwide, apartment rental listing prices slightly increased from last month's $1,384 to $1,392. One-bedroom rentals across the nation listed for an average of $1,223, just higher than last month's average of $1,216, while two-bedroom rental listing prices slightly rose from last month's average of $1,370 to $1,378. In New Castle County, the average apartment listed for rent is 3% above the national average. One-bedroom apartment rentals listed 1% above the national average, with two-bedroom rentals listed 7% above. The average apartment rental prices used in this report are gathered from Apartment List, which estimates the median rent using median rent statistics from the Census Bureau's American Community Survey and a growth rate calculated from their listing data.
