Gallego energizes Iowa voters amid 2028 speculation

Sen. Ruben Gallego (D-Ariz.) energized Iowa voters at a town hall in Davenport over the weekend, delivering a message of hope while also using the setting to put the GOP on the defensive. 'When you're a politician that is choosing your voters, instead of being able to convince voters, you have a losing message, right?' Gallego told several hundred people, referring to the Texas redistricting battle playing out. Gallego also knocked President Trump for the country's still high grocery prices and for Republicans cutting food stamps, a reference to Trump's mega policy bill, which cut food stamps and Medicaid to offset costs of the bill. The Arizona Democrat said Americans were 'now sicker and poorer because of Donald Trump.' At the same time, Gallego also offered a message of hope while traveling in the state. 'There's no governing coalition until we start winning here,' the Arizona senator told The New York Times. 'And we know how to do it, I know how to get the message to do it. So I'm here to, most of all, encourage the Democratic Party, because they feel a little down right now here.' Gallego made several stops in the Hawkeye State, including a visit to the Iowa State Fair, amid growing speculation that he might be eyeing a bid for 2028. Iowa has traditionally been on the early presidential nominating calendar, though Democrats knocked Iowa from its early perch last cycle as former President Biden sought to put South Carolina first instead. 2024 Election Coverage Gallego is also expected to travel to New Hampshire later this month for several events, including 'Politics & Eggs' event, hosted by the New England Council and the New Hampshire Institute of Politics at Saint Anselm College. Both the Iowa State Fair and 'Politics & Eggs' event have long been testing grounds for rising political stars and potential White House hopefuls testing their message in early primary states. Gallego has said he's thought about running for the White House but maintained it's not his focus right now.

Gallego headed to New Hampshire amid 2028 speculation

Sen. Ruben Gallego (D-Ariz.) is traveling to New Hampshire next month, ramping up speculation about potential presidential ambitions ahead of 2028. Gallego is heading to the Granite State to participate in a 'Politics & Eggs' event, hosted by the New England Council and the New Hampshire Institute of Politics at Saint Anselm College, on Aug. 22. The event has a long history of acting as a forum for potential White House candidates and aspiring politicians to test their reception in the early presidential primary state. Gallego will also be campaigning for Rep. Chris Pappas (D-N.H.), who is running for Senate to succeed Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.), and headline a town hall with Rep. Maggie Goodlander (D-N.H.). The Arizona senator's travels to New Hampshire would come nearly two weeks after traveling to Iowa for several events. Iowa and New Hampshire are both early presidential primary states, further encouraging speculation that Gallego is eyeing a White House bid in 2028. He also released a presidential campaign-looking video teasing his appearance in Iowa. 'Has it ever crossed my mind? F—ing of course, I'm an elected official, it crosses my mind,' Gallego told NBC News in May when asked if running for the White House has crossed his mind. 'Am I thinking about it right now? Absolutely not,' he added to the news outlet.

Congressman Neal slams Trump tariffs after filing resolution to override the president

'Our plan was to question him aggressively,' Neal recalled of Greer's appearance at the committee. 'While he's making the argument [for Trump's tariffs], without being told, at 1:18 p.m., the tariffs are suspended for 90 days. ... All that means is: more suspense.' Advertisement Last Tuesday, the day before the committee hearing, Neal had joined with two other top Democrats in the House, representatives Greg Meeks of New York and Rick Larsen of Washington, Advertisement In his New England Council remarks, Neal expressed surprise that so many Republicans are on board with tariffs now that a Republican president is leading the charge. 'There must be a new group in America, we're not quite sure where they meet, they're called 'Republicans for Tariffs,'' Neal told the council. Neal said he didn't agree with the reasoning behind the various 'reciprocal' tariffs that Trump imposed, and later put on hold. 'I still haven't figured out what Liechtenstein has done to offend us,' Neal said, singling out the small European country, which faces a potential 37 percent reciprocal tariff. The targeting of China, Neal added, poses big concerns for the US economy given the two countries' interdependence. Trump is imposing a 145 percent tariff on imported Chinese goods, a number that increased several times in a matter of days, though some products including 'I understand this idea we want to level the playing field,' Neal said. 'But our economies are also intertwined. And that's happened for the better part now of 30-plus years. So I think we ought to be able to reach an agreeable accommodation but not [by] ratcheting it up every hour of the day.'
