Patriots reportedly don't intend to cut Stefon Diggs amid video controversy
On the seventh day of the New England Patriots' Organized Team Activities, wide receiver Stefon Diggs finally made an appearance. It's common for accomplished veterans to wait until training camp to start practicing with the team, but Diggs' presence at OTAs was notable and important for both the player and the franchise after he became subject to national criticism last week when a video of him partying on a boat went viral and the Patriots had to answer for it. [Related: Mike Vrabel on Stefon Diggs boat video: 'We want to make great decisions'] Along with addressing Diggs' off-field decision-making, the Patriots shut down any rumors that they would cut the receiver they just acquired in free agency, per NFL Network. That report and Diggs' attendance at OTAs are both good signs. The Patriots signed Diggs, a four-time Pro Bowler, to a three-year deal worth $69 million ($26 million guaranteed) in March, and wouldn't want the time that went into that deal to go to waste. Since that deal, though, his offseason has been highlighted by NBA game appearances with his girlfriend Cardi B and the boat video. Reporting to OTAs, though, changes the narrative. It shows that the Patriots and Diggs are on the same page about working to get him onto the field — a process that will have its share of obstacles and doesn't need any additional controversy getting in the way. That's because Diggs is still recovering from the ACL tear he sustained in Week 8 of last season while playing for his previous team, the Houston Texans. It's expected to keep him out at least through Week 4 of this season, per the Athletic. Based on the money the Patriots invested in Diggs, he should be incentivized to prioritize and focus on his rehabilitation. First look at Patriots QB Drake Maye throwing pass to Stefon Diggs The New England Patriots' dynamic quarterback and receiver duo of Drake Maye and Stefon Diggs were on the field together for the first time for an open OTAs practice on Monday. Diggs, who is still recovering from the torn ACL injury he suffered with the Houston Texans last season, was a limited participant at practice. He didn't participate in competitive 11-on-11s, but he was on the field for some of the lighter work. There has been a great deal of anticipation to see how Diggs fits into the Patriots' offense. That question wasn't answered on Monday, but there were teases with Maye throwing him the football. The Patriots are hopeful that Diggs will be cleared to play in the regular season opener. His progress to this point has been impressive for a 31-year-old receiver who is still only seven months out from a serious knee injury. Can he get back to being a top-tier wideout and help lift the Patriots' struggling offense? All eyes will be on the four-time Pro Bowler when the pads come on later in the year. The New England Patriots' wide receiver shared several images of himself, including a photo with Cardi B while they were attending the New York Knicks and Boston Celtics playoff game in Madison Square Garden last month. From the post, it seems like May was a good month for Diggs, but it follows a boat party he attended with his girlfriend Cardi B that could get the newly signed wide receiver in trouble. In a clip of the viral boat party, the Grammy winner was dancing on one side with a group of women while Diggs was also entertaining more women on the other side of the yacht. The NFL star was filmed with a bag containing an unknown substance, which the New England Patriots are currently reviewing. Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated reported that it is not far off to think that the Patriots could release Diggs for his behavior. 'It's going to be hard… the league is going to look into this, and they're going to hit a dead end because they're not going to be able to prove what was in the bag,' Breer continued. Diggs did not show up to a voluntary practice but the Patriots head coach, Mike Vrabel, why the athlete was absent. 'So then it's up to the team to make a decision. And if the team wants to recoup any of the guaranteed money, they have to cut him right away… my guess would be that the reason he wasn't at practice the other day might be because Mike told him to stay away and maybe they're sorting through everything now.' Vrabel declined to comment on whether he has spoken to Diggs about it. 'Any conversations that I've had with Stefon will remain between him, I and the club,' Vrabel said before an optional practice on Wednesday that Diggs did not attend. 'It's something that we're aware of,' Vrabel said. 'Obviously, we want to make great decisions on and off the field … The message will be the same for all our players, that we're trying to make great decisions.' An NFL spokesman said the league would not comment. Diggs' agents did not immediately respond to a text from The Associated Press requesting comment.
