Report: Vlad Guerrero Jr., Blue Jays agree on 14-year, $500-million megadeal to keep superstar in Toronto

Guerrero, who has posted a line of .287/.362/.498 with 160 home runs in parts of seven season with Toronto, was to become a free agent after this season. He's off to a 10 for 39 (.256) start to this season, without a home run through 10 games. Get Starting Point A guide through the most important stories of the morning, delivered Monday through Friday. Enter Email Sign Up The son of Hall of Famer Vladimir Guerrero was the top prospect in the sport when he made his Blue Jays debut in April 2019, part of a triumvirate of second-generation talent with Bo Bichette and Cavan Biggio that passed through the New Hampshire Fisher Cats on the way to Toronto. Advertisement Guerrero made the first of four straight All-Star teams in 2021, a superstar declaration when he slugged 48 homers, led the league with a 1.002 OPS, and finished second to Aaron Judge in AL MVP voting. It remains his career year, but since the start of the 2019 season, Guerrero is 27th in the majors with 21.7 bWAR, just ahead of Rafael Devers's 21.3. Advertisement He had a resurgent 2024, winning a Silver Slugger at first base with 199 hits, a .323 average, and a .940 OPS — all top five in the American League. The Jays had been in the running for both Soto and Ohtani, but were unable to sign each. They'd similarly appeared unable to find common ground with the 26-year-old Guerrero, who set a Feb. 17 deadline for extension talks this spring. 'They expressed what they had. I expressed what I had. I'm here, and we didn't get an agreement,' Guerrero told reporters the following day. 'Now, they're going to have to compete with 29 more teams.' Much like The Blue Jays begin a three-game series against the Red Sox on Monday night at Fenway Park. They were swept this weekend in New York by the Mets, scoring three runs total in three losses.
