Will Albuquerque's ‘Rail Trail' Be A Thing?

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – For years, New Mexicans have heard promises of 'revitalization' and 'redevelopment' in downtown Albuquerque—but is it actually happening? This week on the New Mexico News Insiders Podcast, Chris and Gabby sit down with Terry Brunner, Director of the Metropolitan Redevelopment Agency, to pull back the curtain on how government is working with the private sector to incentivize development. Brunner details housing plans, local business buy-in for increased security, and some long-game, multimillion-dollar projects like the 'Rail Trail.' What is it exactly? And when could people see the Rail Trail in real life? Right now, it's hard to walk from Old Town to the Bosque trail; it's not an easy path,' Brunner explains. 'So it's just logical. You want to build a nicer connector that takes you from Old Town to the Bio Park to the Bosque Trail. Like, that's common sense.' Two 'simple' goals for downtown include adding more shade and improving parking. Brunner also shares what he's learned from visiting other major cities, and draws on the overall mission to attract more people to downtown. 'Getting bodies downtown is really the key to everything,' Brunner explained. 'That changes the dynamic so much. But when you're the only person Thursday at 3 p.m., it feels lonely and weird and not that great.' Listen to the full discussion above to hear what is being prioritized over the next few years and how much it'll cost. Incompetent to Stand Trial? Arrest, Release, Repeat

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – When someone is deemed 'incompetent' to stand trial, how does New Mexico's criminal justice system respond? It's the subject of a recent Larry Barker investigation that looked at cases involving hundreds of arrests, only for the offenders to be released back onto the streets. People who are mentally ill are committing crimes across the state, getting arrested, and their cases are dismissed without any repercussions or assistance. This week on the New Mexico News Insiders Podcast, Barker, along with University of New Mexico Criminal Law Professor Joshua Kastenberg, join Chris and Gabby to discuss the complexities of cases like this, and why the justice system isn't set up to help the incompetent suspects or their victims. Why isn't there a better alternative for people deemed incompetent to stand trial? How will new legislation impact cases like this? Those questions and more are discussed in the full interview above. Albuquerque's Civilian Response Team Marks 100K Calls

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Albuquerque's civilian emergency response team marked its 100,000th call three-and-a-half years into service. Albuquerque Community Safety (ACS) launched in 2021 as part of the city's effort to provide a more specialized approach to behavioral health, homelessness, and non-violent related 911 emergencies. Walter Adams was one of the first five responders and is now ACS's Deputy Director of Field Operations. This week on the New Mexico News Insiders Podcast, Adams joins Chris and Gabby to explain how the department is measuring its success and the rapid growth it has experienced. Is ACS making a dent in homelessness? Does having this third option help relieve police and fire crews? Those questions and more are discussed in the full interview above. Adams addresses some misconceptions about the department, including the idea that they only respond to calls related to homelessness. He also explains the efforts behind the Violent Intervention Program and Opiod Education Program, aimed at stopping cycles of violence and helping people recover from opioid addiction. City Councilors Quash Fire Chief's Staffing Plans

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Albuquerque Fire Rescue Chief Emily Jaramillo is the first woman to serve as Fire Chief in the department's 123-year history. As a former teacher, Jaramillo was compelled to switch careers when she had a recruiter come talk to her class. This week on the New Mexico News Insiders Podcast, Chief Jaramillo joins Chris and Gabby to discuss the challenges and fulfilling parts of the job. She also discusses a contentious City Council meeting that had her in the hot seat defending a controversial staffing change she believes will improve response times in the city and ultimately help save lives in an emergency. Some local firefighters addressed the staffing plan during public comment, accusing Chief Jaramillo of abandoning their two-paramedic rescue system and going against the so-called 'gold standard.' However, Chief Jaramillo claims her plan would provide quicker life-saving response to patients in an emergency, and says firefighters will have a chance to improve their EMS skills by rotating between trucks. So why was it ultimately city councilors who quashed AFR's staffing plan? How is the Chief responding to AFR morale? Those topics and more are discussed in the full interview.
