Federal cuts impact Kansas City-area farming program
KANSAS CITY, Kan. — The future of a local farming program could be at risk because of more federal cuts. Catholic Charities and Cultivate KC have run the New Roots program at the Juniper Gardens Training Farm in Kansas City, Kansas for the last 17 years, but its future is unclear after losing its funding. 'Yellowstone' baked beans sold in 23 states recalled The New Roots Program supports immigrant and refugee families working to create sustainable businesses, but according to program leadership, they were notified in February that a three-year federal grant used to support the program would be terminated immediately. Leaders say the U.S. Department of Agriculture determined the grant no longer aligned with the Trump administration's priorities regarding diversity, equity and inclusion programs and activities. According to New Roots, 'farmers need support now more than ever. We remain committed to the New Roots program and will continue operating the Juniper Gardens Training Farm and working alongside Catholic Charities to plan for a smooth transition into the fall.' Catholic Charities aid additional funding cuts for refugee and immigration services nationwide total a loss of nearly $5 million. Because of the cuts, Catholic Charities is no longer providing staff or financial support for the program starting Oct. 15.
