Tyler Adams will miss USMNT's final pre-Gold Cup match with foot injury
Tyler Adams will not play in the U.S. men's national team friendly against Switzerland on Tuesday, manager Mauricio Pochettino said Monday afternoon. Adams suffered a minor foot injury and did not participate in the few minutes of training on Monday before the session was ultimately postponed due to weather. "I think it's not a big issue, hope it's not a big issue," Pochettino told reporters. "I think we can manage. I think he'll rest a few days and then see if he can be ready for the Gold Cup. That's why he's not going to be involved tomorrow [in the final tournament tune-up match vs. Switzerland]." Adams came off the bench in the second half of the Americans' 2-1 loss to Turkiye on Saturday. Despite the defeat, Adams, who wore the captain's armband throughout the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, was optimistic and upbeat after the match. "Are you kidding me? So many positives to take away from that game," Adams told reporters. "It's one of the first times that we've gone down and we've created so many clear chances afterwards. Now, it's just about putting the ball in the back of the net." Pochettino said he's not concerned about other players needing to miss Tuesday's match. He said the players who went 90 minutes vs. Turkiye – including Matt Freese, Chris Richards, Alex Freeman, Luca de la Torre and Malik Tillman – will be evaluated, as well as those who may have come into camp with other issues, like Walker Zimmerman who recently recovered from a concussion. "We are always talking with the medical staff and trying to help everyone be in good condition for the Gold Cup," Pochettino said. "Tomorrow is an opportunity to keep progressing and playing. Good to have another tough opponent like Switzerland that is going to be tough in a similar way to Turkiye." Pochettino also addressed the squad's goalkeeper situation. Freese, who plays for New York City FC, made his USMNT debut on Saturday, starting over veteran Matt Turner. Pochettino had previously said the goalkeeper competition is open and gave Freese a chance. "I am so happy with him because I think he managed really well," Pochettino said of Freese. "He was very, very good. Things he needs to improve? Of course. But he needs to play and needs games with the national team. I think he of course needs to improve, like all the players, but I'm so happy with his debut. He's a great guy and he has amazing potential. "It's a good competition for us to discover that he can cope with the pressure to play for the national team." Turkiye storms back to beat USMNT 2-1
THE countdown to the 2026 World Cup continued for the US men's national team on Saturday in a 2-1 loss to Turkiye in a friendly in East Hartford, Conn. Jack McGlynn scored 59 seconds into the match before Arda Guler in the 24th minute and Kerem Akturkoglu in the 27th gave Turkiye the lead. With the World Cup beginning in one year and four days, coach Mauricio Pochettino, on the job since September, assembled out of necessity a makeshift 26-man roster which includes six newcomers and 12 players with five or fewer appearance. This is the group that will compete in the CONCACAF Gold Cup beginning June 15, the last competitive tournament for the US until the World Cup. Featured Videos The US was without mainstays Weston McKennie, Tim Weah and Gio Reyna because of the upcoming Club World Cup; Christian Pulisic is resting while Antonee Robinson, Folarin Balogun and Sergino Dest are among those regulars who are injured. Goalkeeper Matt Freese of New York City FC and Orlando City defender Alex Freeman started in the US debuts and Philadelphia Union teammates Nathan Harriel and Quinn Sullivan made their first appearances in the 65th minute. Opportunities to impress Pochettino abound over the next month and McGlynn took advantage. Accepting a pass on the right flank by Malik Tillman, he cut toward the middle of the field and ripped a left-footed strike to the far netting for the early lead. He has two goals in his two starts. The lead evaporated on an unforced poor clearance by Johnny Cardoso in front of the goal that deflected off Guler and past the stunned Freese. It took only 2:20 for the Turks to move ahead when the US defense was scrambling, leaving Akturkoglu unmarked. The US had a chance for the equalizer in the 61st minute but Tillman headed a cross from Tyler Adams directly at keeper Berke Ozer. Turkiye did not have a shot attempt in the second half until the 83rd minute as the US dominated play

Report: New York City FC leads MLS race to sign Luka Modric amid Dinamo Zagreb uncertainty
Luka Modrić (via Getty Images) Luka Modrić, one of the most iconic midfielders in world football, is coming to the close of his illustrious career at Real Madrid—and his next stop may be on the Atlantic. With Dinamo Zagreb struggling to win the Croatian league championship, Major League Soccer clubs such as New York City FC and Los Angeles FC are making increased overtures to acquire the Croatian legend. Dinamo Zagreb title slip chance might influence Luka Modrić towards Major League Soccer spell DAY ONE OF GREATNESS: Luka Modric's FIRST DAY at Real Madrid back in 2012 As Luka Modrić bids farewell to Real Madrid after 13 incredible seasons and more than 20 top honors, his next possible transfer is generating interest far outside of Europe. While many Croatians dream of watching him return to Dinamo Zagreb, the club where he began, Luka Luka Modrić's next stop might actually be the United States and Major League Soccer. New York City FC is reported to be leading the pack, continuing its tradition of bringing in European anchors onto the MLS stage—Frank Lampard, Andrea Pirlo, and David Villa being some of the most notable. Los Angeles FC is also heavily rumored with the midfielder, where fellow countrymen Olivier Giroud and World Cup winner Hugo Lloris are recent signings. Timing might just be perfect, as the 2026 FIFA World Cup is set to be staged in the United States, Canada, and Mexico; this move could give Modrić the exposure and competitive tempo he needs. Back home, for Dinamo Zagreb, things are much less clear-cut. Dinamo's hope rests above all on winning the Croatian league championship—something not at all certain this season. Without it, both the club's negotiating strength and the sentimental attraction of a return diminish considerably. For Modrić, the choice probably tips sentimental worth versus pragmatic possibility. The return to Dinamo Zagreb would be celebrated as a victorious return home, but the opportunity to become an MLS marquee name in an era of explosive league expansion might prove too pragmatic to pass up.
