Queens baby died from SIDS, not pit bull mauling, parents reveal

A one-month-old baby girl found dead with severe facial injuries in a Queens housing complex last week did not die from a dog mauling, rather from sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), according to her grieving parents and a preliminary medical report. Little Kiyanna Winfield was discovered lifeless in bed by her mother, Lillian Burton, and stepfather, Christopher, early Tuesday morning inside their apartment at the Queensbridge Houses. Initially, police believed the infant was killed by the family's six-week-old pit bull-German Shepherd mix named Bella, who was later euthanised. However, on Wednesday, the New York City Office of the Medical Examiner confirmed the dog's bites came after the baby had already died. 'We can confirm this is not a death from a dog mauling,' a spokesperson for the office said, adding that the cause of death is 'pending further study to include a full pediatric workup.' The family claim they had no idea their daughter had passed away until the devastating discovery that morning. 'Our baby was alive when we all went to sleep. That is the last thing we know,' said Christopher. 'Our baby died of SIDS… She also had medical issues. She had a heart murmur," the New York Post reported. The couple say they were horrified to wake up and find the young pup biting Kiyanna's face around 6:30 a.m. The child was pronounced dead at the scene, with authorities describing the injuries as involving a 'substantial portion' of her face. 'I did not kill my child,' Lillian Burton said in an emotional interview. "I take real good care of my kids," she said, "They're well fed, they're well changed, they're well put together." "For someone to say my kids are malnourished, that isn't true." Photographs show Kiyanna as a healthy newborn weeks before the tragedy, peacefully napping at the hospital and at home. Neighbours told The Post they had raised concerns about the puppy days earlier. 'I told her, 'That dog needs to be on a leash,'' said Shanel Nroville, who lives in the building. 'She said, 'No, this dog don't bite.' I said, 'All dogs bite.'' The family has since been locked out of their apartment while police continue their investigation. No charges have been filed as authorities await the final autopsy results.

Parents thought their pitbull puppy mauled their baby to death while they slept. An autopsy says otherwise

A one-month-old baby who died in a New York City apartment was not killed by a dog despite initial suspicions, an autopsy has found. Kiyanna Winfield was pronounced dead at the Queensbridge Houses complex in Long Island City on Tuesday morning. At first NYPD investigators believed the newborn had been mauled by the family's 6-week-old pit bull and German Shepherd mix puppy. The girl's mother reportedly told cops she had been sleeping between her parents in bed when they woke up to find the dog gnawing at her face. When police arrived Kiyanna was unconscious with 'a substantial portion' of her face bitten off. However, a medical examiner has ruled that she did not die as a result of the dog's bites. 'The cause and manner of death are pending further study following the examination today,' a spokesperson for the New York City Office of the Medical Examiner told The New York Post Wednesday. 'But we can confirm this is not a death from a dog mauling. The injuries inflicted by the dog were postmortem.' Winfield's official cause of death is 'pending further study' and will 'include a full pediatric workup', the spokesperson said. No charges have been filed as of Thursday. Neighbors from the apartment complex said they heard 'piercing screams of a mother in anguish' bellowing through the building when the incident occurred Tuesday morning. Upon learning of the girl's death, neighbor Shanel Norville told NBC New York: 'That's really sad. I feel bad for the mom.' Norville added that she rarely saw the puppy on a leash. Two other dogs, including a pit bull, were found inside the home. The young pit bull mix pup was removed from the home by the NYPD and taken to an Animal Care Centers of NYC shelter on Tuesday evening, according to the New York Daily News. The animal was reportedly placed on a 10-day observation hold for rabies. Yvette Mathurin, whose late son was an ex-boyfriend of Kiyanna's mother, described the family's excitement at the birth. Mathurin had remained close to the girl's mother after her own son's death. 'She promised to come see me,' Mathurin told the New York Daily News. 'She said she was going to bring the baby. She was very excited. She loves kids, loves children. 'Everybody was shocked to hear what happened.'

Michelle Trachtenberg spoke out about health speculation before her death

A year before she passed away, actress Michelle Trachtenberg sought to let her supporters know she was in good health. Her message is being revisited on social media by some of her followers in light of news Wednesday regarding her cause of death at age 39. Trachtenberg, who starred in'Buffy the Vampire Slayer,' died on February 26 in Manhattan as a result of complications from diabetes mellitus, according to a spokesperson for the New York City Office of the Medical Examiner. Best known for performances in that beloved series as well as 'Gossip Girl' and the film 'Harriet the Spy,' Trachtenberg sparked concern after posting what appeared to be a selfie last year with fellow actress, 'Spy Kids' star Alexa PenaVega. After a commenter asked Trachtenberg if she was sick, she responded, 'Explain to me how I look sick. Did you lose a calendar and not realize I'm not 14. I'm 38. How sad for you to leave such a comment.' She followed it up the next day with another post and a message for those who were concerned. 'I've received several comments recently about my appearance,' she wrote in the caption. 'I have never had plastic surgery I am happy and healthy. Check yourself haters.' Trachtenberg's final post on Instagram came on February 18, where she shared a photo of herself from her younger years, glammed up with her hair swept to one side. 'I wanted to look like naughty #tinkerbell 💚 #throwback,' Trachtenberg wrote in the caption of the photo, which has served as a place where fans and fellow performers have offered their condolences since her death.
