‘Mass casualty incident': Mexican Navy vessel slams into New York's iconic Brooklyn Bridge leaving multiple critically injured
A mass casualty incident has been declared after a Mexican Navy ship slammed into the Brooklyn Bridge during a promotional tour in New York City, leaving several crew members critically injured and sparking a frantic search operation. The collision occurred just after 9pm, with all three of the tall ship's 147-foot tall masts colliding into the bridge, sending tourists screaming and leaving the ship virtually destroyed. The New York Police Department confirmed in a press conference that 19 people had been injured in the collision, including four who were seriously injured and that all had been taken to New York's Bellevue Hospital. The New York Fire Department earlier confirmed that authorities were responding to injuries but did not know whether they were on the vessel or the bridge. The Mexican training vessel, called the ARM Cuauhtémoc was carrying 277 people at the time of incident with a Fire Department official stating everyone on board the ship was believed to be accounted for. A search and rescue operation is underway to locate and pull people out of the water, with the Mexican Navy labelling the incident a 'mass casualty event'. Harrowing footage posted to social media has emerged showing the mast striking scaffolding on the underside of the bridge, with debris falling toward the deck of the ship, including significant portions of the mast, lights and rigging. The vessel appeared to lurch backwards but remained upright, despite all three masts of the ship snapping and partially collapsing. Crew members, who were mostly cadets were seen plummeting into the water as terrified onlookers standing underneath the bridge frantically bolted from the scene as the ship drifted towards the edge of the river. Videos showed heavy traffic accumulating after the collision, with the NYPD confirming road closures had been put in place. The Mexican Navy said in a post to X that the academy training vessel was damaged in an accident with the Brooklyn Bridge, which prevented it from continuing its voyage and that the status of the personnel was under investigation by local authorities. "During the sailing maneuvers of the Cuauhtémoc sailboat in New York, a mishap occurred with the Brooklyn Bridge, causing damage to the training ship, preventing the continuation of the training cruise for the time being," the post said. In a statement on X, the New York City Emergency Management said, "the situation is developing, and details are not confirmed at this time". The mayor of New York Eric Adams is also believed to be present at the scene and has been briefed on the situation, CBS reported. The vessel was built in Spain in 1982 and had been in the city as part of a promotion for next year's "Sail4th" tall ship event. The event will celebrate America's 250th birthday on July 4, 2026. Authorities indicated that initial probes indicated a mechanical failure may have contributed to the ship smashing into the bridge.
