Luke Littler overcomes ‘shaky start' to win New Zealand Darts Masters title

Luke Littler produced a brilliant display to beat Luke Humphries and claim the New Zealand Darts Masters title. The 18-year-old followed up his victory in Australia last weekend by averaging more than 115 in an 8-4 final success over defending champion Humphries in Auckland. 'I'm playing very well at the moment, I'm enjoying my darts, and hopefully I can keep this winning streak going.' Earlier, Littler had beaten Mike De Decker 6-2 and Gerwyn Price 7-2, while Humphries reached the final with a 6-2 success against Damon Heta before seeing off Chris Dobey 7-4. I played pretty well today but when you run into a 115 average there's not much you can do Littler always looked in control against Humphries, opening up an early 3-0 lead before extending his cushion to 6-2. Humphries reduced the deficit to two legs but Littler finished in style with successive 11-darters. The Nuke picked up £30,000 and admitted: 'Tonight couldn't have gone any better. The scoring, the doubles. I was in the zone and I wasn't missing much. 'Just getting into that place, getting into a rhythm. Gezzy (Price), the record, everyone knows and it was nice to get another win against him. I had a shaky start but once you come into the second day, I know I've got to switch it on and that's what I've done. 'In the final I just felt untouchable, everything was going in, even the doubles. The power scoring was there once again. 'Happy to go home tomorrow as back-to-back champion. 'This is definitely better than Hamilton last year. The venue feels like a Premier League night. It's packed and we come here to play great darts. 'I'm playing very well and I'm on a winning streak. But next up is Antwerp for the European tour, hopefully I can keep this going.' He added: 'I came back on the stage after the break and my first nine darts was a nine darter. 'For sure the better player won. When he's on it, he's untouchable. 'I held in there a little bit but he was just too good in the end. 'When his music comes on and my music comes on. I live for it. I want to play him all the time. It really gets me up for it. 'He was unbelievable there. It is inconvenient when you run into someone as good as him. I gave my best and it was a tough game.'
