The former Made in Chelsea star, 30, opened up on her NewlyParents podcast this week, admitting she's noticed a dramatic change to her once-perfect smile since becoming pregnant with her first child. Speaking to husband Jamie Laing, she said: 'I've always had thick white teeth and these aren't veneers, these are my real teeth, but now they've gone a bit grey and see-through. "I can actually see my tongue behind them. They're so thin, they're frail.' The TV favourite went on to say she's chipped the same tooth three times during her pregnancy, most recently after biting into something as soft as cottage cheese. 'I don't understand what's happening,' she added. 'They're just breaking. My teeth are rotting from pregnancy.' But while Sophie's confession had listeners both shocked and amused, dental experts say she's not alone and the changes are down to some very real effects pregnancy can have on your oral health. The chat comes after Sophie and Jamie revealed they're expecting a baby, the same week they became the first married couple to co-host BBC Radio 1. The pair shared a sweet video of Sophie in hospital having a baby scan, with celeb pals like Molly-Mae Hague and Louise Thompson flooding the comments with congrats. Why pregnancy can play havoc with your teeth Dr Nyree Whitley, Chief Clinical Officer at mydentist, the UK's largest provider of affordable dental care, says hormonal changes during pregnancy can cause red, swollen gums, increased sensitivity, and even damage to tooth enamel. 'Pregnancy gingivitis is common due to increased levels of progesterone, which can inflame gum tissue,' Dr Nyree explained. 'This can make gums bleed more easily when brushing and make the teeth feel more sensitive or even loose. Jamie Laing reveals wife Sophie Habboo is pregnant with their first child "Hormone changes can also affect your reaction to plaque, so it's more important than ever to keep up your oral hygiene routine.' She added that while not everyone will experience such dramatic changes, those who do should seek regular dental check-ups, which are free on the NHS during pregnancy and for the first year after giving birth. Morning sickness, cravings and tooth decay Morning sickness can also pose a problem for mums-to-be. Frequent vomiting exposes teeth to stomach acid, which can erode enamel over time. 'If you are sick, avoid brushing for at least an hour afterwards,' Dr Nyree advised. 'Instead, rinse your mouth with water to neutralise the acid and freshen up with a sugar-free mint.' If yours lean towards sugary or acidic treats, try to limit them and opt for healthier alternatives where possible. 'Sugar interacts with bacteria in plaque to produce acid, which can lead to cavities,' she said. Grinding and postpartum care Disrupted sleep is another common pregnancy complaint that can lead to teeth grinding. In some cases, dentists may recommend wearing a mouthguard at night to protect your smile. And the work doesn't stop once your baby arrives. 'Hormones continue to fluctuate postpartum, so any gum inflammation you experienced may persist,' Dr Nyree said. 'Regular brushing, flossing, and check-ups are key.' Sophie may be taking her dental woes in good humour, but her warning to fellow mums-to-be is clear — pregnancy can do far more than give you swollen ankles and weird cravings. 'I can see my tongue through my teeth,' she told Jamie. 'That's how thin they are. It's terrifying.' With expert advice, a solid dental routine, and free NHS care for expectant mums, it's one pregnancy problem you don't have to simply grin and bear. Expert's three oral hygiene tips for mums-to-be Dr Nyree Whitley, Chief Clinical Officer at mydentist has advised expecting mums to do the following three things. Brush twice a day — Use a fluoride toothpaste and a soft-bristled brush to avoid irritating sensitive gums. Rinse after sickness — Wait an hour before brushing to prevent acid damage, but rinse with water straight away. Watch the cravings — Limit sugary or acidic snacks and opt for healthier options like dark chocolate in moderation. 5 Sophie is expecting a child with her husband Jamie Laing Credit: Getty 5 The couple tied the knot in 2023 Credit: Getty

Sophie Habboo says husband Jamie Laing threatened to leave her over her pregnancy hormones

Sophie Habboo and Jamie Laing are expecting their first child together but it seems the pair have had a few rows after the Made In Chelsea star told his wife she was being 'unbearable' while dealing with her pregnancy symptoms. Sophie Habboo has candidly opened up about her extreme pregnancy hormones in her recent podcast, confessing her husband Jamie Laing threatened to leave after she became intensely 'grumpy' as a result of them. Jamie Laing, 36, and his wife Sophie, 30, are getting ready to welcome their first child, having announced the happy news with fans at the beginning of the month. The couple have been flooded with support from fans as they share heartwarming updates about their pregnancy, including some adorable snaps of Sophie's growing baby bump. On their podcast, NewlyParents, the couple discussed Sophie's hormones, revealing that Jamie told her she was being 'unbearable' when she was feeling nauseated all day. ‌ She recalled: "We are leaving and I feel really sick this day, unless I have a piece of bread in my mouth, I feel I'm going to vomit. And Jamie gets his camera out and goes, 'I'm going to vlog today'. I'm like, 'What on my Sunday that I'm about to vomit all day long? He's told me he's going to take me to Borough Market so I can eat the world, but it's for the vlog. ‌ "And what happened was Jamie sits down and he goes 'I'm going to call my friends and ask them what I should do about this. Because I'm going to have to leave you. "I'm going to leave you because you're just so unbearable right now. And I'm going to ask my friends how to do that." She recounted how she cried and wailed and said: "And I went 'You're going to leave me and I'm pregnant'.' ‌ Sophie and Jamie laughed as they retold the story but Jamie was quick to defend himself, saying he was totally unaware of the hormonal changes she was going through and is now completely supportive, the Metro reports. Jamie said: "The amount of people who are going to call me an a*****e. Just a caveat very quickly, I had no idea the emotional journey that you go on, how your body changes. "I just didn't understand the extreme things that go on and since having read stuff and by the way Sophie sends me stuff every day on Instagram, I am awe of what you go through. The hormone change is wild." ‌ Sophie then added: "The bowel change is wild, it's really upsetting and no one tells you that." In the podcast, they discussed their conception journey as Jamie admitted to not really understanding the the ins and outs of conceiving a child. ‌ He said: "Turns out I had no idea about this. I honestly thought for the whole of my life right? That I was walking around with a loaded gun.". Sophie immediately said his phrase was a 'rank description' as he continued to say he thought his penis was a 'loaded gun full of semen'. He said: "I thought it was easy to get anyone pregnant, like so easy". ‌ Sophie added that he was 'thick' when it came to speaking about fertility and explained that he had been wanting to try for a baby even when she was on her period. ‌ Jamie revealed he also had no idea that women could only get pregnant on just one day of the month. This podcast episode comes as the couple have rebranded their podcast from NewlyWeds to NearlyParents. ‌ In a press release about the change, Sophie said: "I'm so excited for this next chapter of our podcast, and of our lives! I feel like NewlyWeds has always been about sharing the real, messy, and wonderful parts of our relationship, and now we get to do the same as we start our family. It feels so special to bring our listeners along for the ride." Jamie added: "I can't wait to share this chapter of our lives with you – and to have a whole new bunch of hilarious stories to share! "NearlyParents is going to be all about the ups, the downs, and the in-betweens of not only becoming parents, but how we also navigate everything life throws at us in between!" ‌ Announcing the news that they are expecting their first baby together, the pair shared a touching video of their scan on Instagram. The footage shows Sophie lying on a hospital bed and smiling at Jamie, who asked how she was feeling and said, 'Oh my god.' The pair then saw the scan, and Jamie could be heard saying, 'Are you kidding me?' The video then panned to an ecstatic Sophie listening to their baby's heartbeat.
