Karnataka School Holiday: Schools, Colleges Closed In This Rain-Hit District Tomorrow
According to the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC), flooding, landslides, and power outages have already been reported in several coastal and interior districts, including Bengaluru, Udupi, Dakshina Kannada, Shivamogga, Chikkamagaluru, and Uttara Kannada. The IMD said that the rain-bearing system, fuelled by a cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal and an active monsoon trough across central India, is expected to continue drenching the region through the week. (News18 Kannada) An orange alert has been issued for Gadag, Dharwad, Haveri, Shivamogga, Chikkamagaluru, and Dakshina Kannada, where rainfall between 115–204 mm is expected. Farmers have been advised to take precautions to safeguard crops as road connectivity and power supply may be severely affected. (News18 Kannada) The state capital, Bengaluru, too has been bearing the brunt of the rain. On Monday, several low-lying areas, including Silk Board, Bommanahalli, Marathahalli, Koramangala, and Whitefield, were inundated. Traffic snarls, waterlogging, and power cuts brought parts of the city to a standstill. The IMD forecast for Bengaluru suggests cloudy skies with continuous showers, a maximum temperature of 23 degrees Celsius, and winds of up to 50 km/hr. (News18 Kannada) With safety concerns mounting, District Collector Lakshmi Priya announced a two-day holiday for all educational institutions in ten taluks of Uttara Kannada district, including Karwar, Ankola, Kumta, Honnavar, Bhatkal, Sirsi, Siddapur, Yellapur, Joida, and Dandeli. The closure applies to Anganwadis, primary and high schools, and pre-university colleges on August 18 and 19. Similarly, in Kodagu, which remains under an orange alert, authorities have suspended classes in all schools and pre-university colleges due to fears of flash floods and landslides. (News18 Kannada) The state has been grappling with the aftermath of landslides for several days. The vital Mangaluru–Bengaluru highway was blocked after a massive landslide at Shiradi Ghat, disrupting travel between the coastal and interior regions. Officials have cautioned motorists against unnecessary travel in hilly terrain and appealed to residents to remain indoors where possible. (News18 Kannada) Authorities have also warned that rainfall could intensify further as the cyclonic system over the Bay of Bengal tracks inland. Citizens in flood-prone areas have been asked to stay vigilant, avoid venturing into waterlogged stretches, and keep emergency supplies ready. (News18 Kannada)

What Kannada Actor Darshan Said As His Bail Was Cancelled In Renukaswamy Murder Case
In a major development in the sensational Renukaswamy murder case that gripped Karnataka earlier this year, the Supreme Court on Saturday cancelled the bail of seven accused, including Kannada film star Darshan and his associate Pavithra Gowda. The order effectively paves the way for the high-profile actor's return to jail. (News18 Kannada) A bench comprising Justices JB Pardiwala and R Mahadevan delivered the verdict while hearing the Karnataka government's plea challenging the Karnataka High Court's earlier decision to grant bail. The apex court held that the High Court order contained 'errors' and that bail had been extended 'for certain reasons' which could not be justified. (News18 Kannada) The bench stressed that 'no one is big or small before the law' and even criticised the prison administration for allegedly allowing Darshan a comfortable stay in custody. The court observed that the jail superintendent 'should have been suspended' for the reported preferential treatment. (News18 Kannada) Darshan, who had been out on bail since the High Court's ruling, was reportedly in Tamil Nadu when the Supreme Court verdict came. Sources told News18 that the actor had recently returned from an overseas film shoot and was visiting temples with his wife, Vijayalakshmi. His exact location at the time of the announcement remains unclear, but he is believed to have been at a prominent temple in Tamil Nadu. (News18 Kannada) According to police sources, Darshan's mobile phone has been switched off since the verdict, although officers have managed to establish contact. 'He has said he will surrender himself,' one official told reporters. (News18 Kannada) The Supreme Court order also applies to six other accused in the case - Pavithra Gowda (A1), Jagadish alias Jagga (A6), Anukumar alias Anu (A7), Pradush (A14), Nagaraju alias Naga (A11), and Lakshman (A12). (News18 Kannada) Darshan, popularly known as 'Challenging Star' in the Kannada film industry, had been working on his upcoming movie Devil before this latest legal setback. With the bail cancelled, his immediate future now appears to be behind bars once more, as police prepare to take him and the others into custody in compliance with the Supreme Court directive. (News18 Kannada) The Renukaswamy murder case, in which 17 people have been named as accused, continues to draw intense public and media scrutiny. The Supreme Court's decision marks a fresh turning point in the ongoing trial, reinforcing the message that celebrity status offers no shield from the law. (News18 Kannada)

7 Situations In Which Daughters May Not Automatically Inherit Property
Last Updated: May 13, 2025, 11:51 IST Property disputes are common within families—between brothers, between fathers and children, and even among daughters, as they too have property rights. The Hindu Succession (Amendment) Act, 2005, has provided equal rights to daughters in their father's property. However, this right is subject to specific conditions. (News18 Kannada) Self-Acquired Property: If the father has purchased the property with his own earnings, he has full rights over it. Whether he sells the property, gifts it, or bequeaths it to someone in his will, the decision is entirely his. If it is not ancestral property, daughters have no automatic legal right. However, if the father has mentioned the daughter in his will, she will be entitled to the property. (News18 Kannada) Partition Before 2005: If the ancestral property was legally divided and registered before 2005, daughters cannot claim rights over it. Courts have upheld such earlier partitions as valid. However, if the partition was unequal, it can be challenged in a court of law. (News18 Kannada) Gifted Property: If the ancestor gifted the property to someone and the gift deed is legally valid, daughters will have no right to that property. The law does not revoke such legally executed gifts. (News18 Kannada) Voluntary Renunciation: If the daughter signs an agreement voluntarily relinquishing her share of the property, for example, in exchange for money or other benefits, she forfeits her right. However, if the agreement was signed under duress or fraud, she can challenge it in court. (News18 Kannada) Exclusion From Will: If the father has drafted a valid will and has explicitly excluded his daughter from inheriting the property, she will not be entitled to a share. The law gives precedence to the will. However, if the will was created under duress or fraud, she can contest it legally. (News18 Kannada) Property Settled In Trust: If the property has been transferred to a trust or legally transferred to someone else, daughters will have no right to inherit it. Properties held in trust are protected under the law. (News18 Kannada) The Hindu Succession Act, 2005, has given equal rights to daughters in property. However, these rights are occasionally restricted due to the above conditions. Before property disputes strain family relationships, it is advisable to seek legal counsel and obtain proper clarification. Supreme Court judgments also offer guidance in such matters.
