WCCO's Amelia Santaniello explains her disappearance from TV screens originally appeared on Bring Me The News. WCCO news anchor Amelia Santaniello has been off the air for a while, and viewers have taken note. On Friday, Santaniello offered an update in a video posted to social media. "I just wanted to let you know where I have been. A lot of you have written in. The last time I took this much time off was when I had my children," Santaniello says. "That is not the case this time. Top 5 Japanese romance dramas on Netflix: From First Love to Nevertheless and more
It's been a while since Sakura and Haruto pulled us into the messy, addictive world of Fishbowl Wives, or since Riisa Naka and Tori Matsuzaka's fiery politician-actor romance had us fully hooked, just two standouts from the growing slate of J-content on Netflix. With the steady rise of Asian shows on OTT platforms, especially with the Hallyu wave cracking open the gate for viewers to explore everything from Thai dramas to Indian series, Japanese slice-of-life dramas, and more, it's clear that the OTT space, once heavy on Hollywood and English content, is now leaning hard into Asian storytelling. Japanese shows, on the other hand, with their tight 8–10 episode format, have become fan favourites for their portrayal of raw human emotions and a crop of talented actors, some already household names. Also read: News Anchor star Nagano Mei quits new J-drama amid rumoured relationship with co-actor, agency says 'great trouble caused to relevant units' Cast: Mone Kamishiraishi, Takeru Satoh, and Katsuya Maiguma Release Year: 2020 Director: Maki Enjoji The show revolves around 22-year-old Nanase Sakura, who fell for Doctor Tendo Kairi years ago after witnessing one of his life-saving, heroic moves. Motivated, she grinds her way into the medical field and eventually lands a job as a nurse, hoping to cross paths with him again. Five years later, she does. But the fairytale quickly flies away when she realises Dr. Tendo isn't quite the man she imagined. Turns out, he's a 33-year-old dubbed the 'devil' at work, a perfectionist to the bone, never hesitating to throw sharp-edged, constructive criticism at his peers. Most can't stand him. Sakura, on the other hand, is headstrong, unfiltered, and refuses to back off. She makes it her mission to catch his attention, never hiding how she feels. And somehow, her persistence starts to get through to him. Cast: Hikari Mitsushima, Takeru Satoh, and Rikako Yagi Release Year: 2022 Director: Yuri Kanchiku This 2022 J-drama follows two teenagers who first met in the late '90s. Yae and Harumichi spent years together, carefree, madly in love, until high school graduation pulled them apart. Yae moved to Tokyo, and Harumichi joined the Self-Defense Forces to study aviation. Before leaving, they promised never to forget each other. But 20 years pass, and everything's changed. Adulthood hits different, the spark's faded, life's gotten heavier. The story picks up again with Yae, who, after a tragic accident, gives up her dream of becoming a flight attendant and now works as a taxi driver. Harumichi, having finished his time in the Forces, is with a security firm. Then, just like that, their paths cross again. The drama is inspired by Hikaru Utada's iconic songs 'First Love' and 'Hatsuko'. It revolves around Kurumi Mashiba, a super work-focused employee at a top interior design firm. Her solo motto? Look good, stay locked into the job, and hustle hard as a fashion influencer, so much so that she forgets everything else, including renewing her apartment lease. Which forces her to move into a shared apartment in Omotesando, the trendy Tokyo neighbourhood, thanks to her friend Kouko Saotome, a food stylist. But Kouko doesn't live alone. Kurumi now finds herself rooming with a bunch of free spirits who see life very differently—like Shun Fujino, a chef chasing a quiet, simple life, and Hase Ayaka, an aspiring artist. Slowly, the new setup starts shaking up Kurumi's world, she begins to question her priorities, rethink her image and opens up to unexpected connections and love. Cast: Ryusei Yokohama as Ren Kosaka, Sara Minami as Miu Hamasaki Release Year: 2024 (Japanese mini-series adaptation) Director: Nakagawa Ryutaro If you've watched Song Kang and Han So Hee's Nevertheless, then you already know the drill. The Sara Minami and Ryusei Yokohama starrer is a Japanese take on the same story, with just a few tweaks in the timeline. Miu is reeling from a breakup that was both brutal and humiliating, and now she's super focused on her art. But her life turns upside down when Kosaka Ren walks in, a free-spirited artist who's back in Japan after years abroad. He joins her university in Kamakura as a guest lecturer, carries a mysterious personality, and has that kind of quiet magnetism that pulls people in, even if he keeps them at arm's length. Except with Miu. That push-pull game. He plays it hard. And even though he stays emotionally checked out, Ren ends up stirring something deep in her that she can't shake. Release Year: 2024 Cast: Fumi Nikaido as Yuri Motomiya, Chae Jong-hyeop as Yoon Tae Oh, Taishi Nakagawa as Akito Hanaoka The story follows Yuri Motomiya, a girl who, after an accident, ends up with a supernatural ability; she can hear people's inner thoughts just by looking into their eyes. At first, it drives her crazy. The constant noise, the unfiltered mess in people's heads, it's enough to make her ditch her dates mid-way. But slowly, she starts making peace with it. And then walks in Yoon Tae Oh, a kind-hearted, soft-spoken Korean student with a calm vibe. Now, every time she looks into his eyes, all she hears is thoughts in Korean, which she doesn't understand. That unexpected barrier turns into her safe zone, letting her finally breathe, speak, and connect without the pressure of hearing every single thing running through someone's mind.

News Anchor star Nagano Mei quits new J-drama amid rumoured relationship with co-actor, agency says ‘great trouble caused to relevant units'
Popular Japanese actor Nagano Mei, once called the 'new generation's first love', has reportedly decided to drop out of her upcoming NHK Taiga drama, Toyotomi Brothers, in light of recent controversies. Her agency, Stardust Promotion, issued a statement confirming the same. The backlash against Mei has intensified since a report published by the magazine, Shukan Bunshun, accused the actor of having an affair with actor Kei Tanaka, who is married. There were also rumours that she was in a relationship with Kim Moo Joon. But, the controversy allegedly impacted the viewership of her Netflix show Caster, also titled News Anchor. Kim Moo Joon and Kei Tanka have both said that they don't have a romantic relationship with Nagano Mei. Also read: Hidden Love star Zhao Lusi admits 'memory loss' from medication on new show: 'I can't film dramas now' On May 23, Mei's agency Stardust, in a statement, said, 'In view of the great trouble and concern caused to the relevant units by this series of reports, [Mei Nagano] has decided to withdraw from the show.' The agency apologised to the fans anticipating the show, which is now considering casting a new face after the lead star's exit. 'We deeply apologise to everyone who is looking forward to the broadcast, as well as the program-related personnel and co-stars.' The drama was scheduled to air in January 2026. Mei became a household name for shows like House of Ninjas on Netflix and the movie Daytime Shooting Star. In the J-drama, Toyotomi Brothers, Mei was roped in to play the character of Nao, the childhood friend-turned-first love of Hidechou, Toyotomi Hideyoshi's brother. The historical series focuses on Hidechou's lesser-known role in unifying Japan. The filming was yet to begin. Also read: Park Seo Joon had a blast with Son Heung Min after UEFA win amid footballer's extortion and abortion row with ex-girlfriend The Japanese magazine published photos of Mei with actor Kei Tanaka, showing them getting into the same car outside Nagano's apartment on April 19. The magazine also claimed Nagano was seeing another actor at the same time, her co-star from the drama Caster. So far, all three stars involved have denied these claims. However, the controversy took a hit on Mei's soaring career as multiple brands dropped her and reportedly around nine advertisers stopped using her ads. On April 28, Mei broke her silence on a late-night radio program, addressing the controversy and apologising to fans for the 'misunderstanding'. 'Regarding the recent controversy, I understand many of my supporters must be concerned. I am truly sorry. However, this is all a misunderstanding. I've deeply reflected on how my carelessness has caused distress to many. From now on, I'll be more cautious in how I interact with male colleagues,' she said. However, instead of putting an end to rumours, the statement fueled more backlash for lacking context. Korean star Kim Moo Joon, for his part, cleared that his visit to Nagano's home was with family and friends, nothing romantic. Meanwhile, Tanaka has maintained that his relationship with the actor is strictly platonic. Despite the controversy and the first official casting fallout, there are no plans for an acting hiatus for Mei as of now.

How Japanese actress Mei Nagano got caught in wild cheating scandal with TWO of her co-stars
One of Japan 's most popular young stars has been swept up in a cheating scandal with not one but two of her male co-stars, which all of them have denied. Mei Nagano is currently one of Japan's most sought-after actresses, landing major hits in both film and television as well as racking up lucrative endorsement deals with luxury brands like Prada and SK-II. At just 25, she's already been nominated for three Japan Academy Film Prizes (Japan's equivalent of the Oscars), and her Netflix series Burn the House Down topped the streaming charts in 2023. Known for her squeaky clean image, Nagano was caught in a mammoth scandal this week when Japanese tabloid Shukan Bunshun claimed that she has been having an affair with married actor Kei Tanaka - who is 15 years her senior. Tanaka, who shares two children with his wife Sakura, previously starred with Nagano in the 2021 film And So the Baton Is Passed, in which she played a high school student and he played her stepfather. The tabloid released a selfie of the pair posing cheek-to-cheek together on Halloween and another image of them holding hands. They also published photos of Tanaka leaving Nagano's apartment, where he had spent the night after they went out drinking together. Making things more complicated, Shukan Bunshun also claims that Nagano has been romantically involved with South Korean actor Kim Mu-jun, 26, who has a supporting role in her latest drama series, News Anchor, which is currently filming. They also claimed that Mu-jun had been staying in Nagano's apartment while he was in Japan to film the series with her. Both men have denied being involved with the young actress. When confronted by a reporter from Shukan Bunshun outside of Nagano's house, Tanaka said that he had only spent the night because he'd drank too much, according to Nante Japan. His agency then put out a statement, refuting allegations of an affair. 'We want to believe that there was no affair. Kei Tanaka has been with our agency since he was 15 years old. He's never been involved in any scandals with women before,' the agency said, according to Channel News Asia. 'This is a situation where excuses are difficult to make. As an agency, we deeply reflect on what has transpired and strongly urge him to exercise restraint and self-awareness.' Mu-jun's agency followed suit, stating that the actor and Nagano were nothing more than 'close colleagues.' Nagano's agency offered a similar statement, saying, 'there is no truth to any romantic involvement.' 'However, we have sternly conveyed to Mei Nagano that her actions this time could easily lead to misunderstandings,' they added. For now, Nagano will continue filming News Anchor, although there is speculation that her screen time may be reduced as a result of the scandal. There is also the question on whether or not the scandal will affect any of her endorsement deals. The actress is currently an ambassador Prada and is the face of countless other brands in Japan. Last month, Prada was forced to terminate their contract with Korean actor Kim Soo-hyun after his secret relationship with late actress Kim Sae-ron was exposed shortly after her suicide. One of Nagano's major fan accounts has already closed down in the wake of the scandal. Despite the furor, Nagano has a busy year ahead with several projects in the pipeline. Her new film Kakukaku Shikajika premieres in May, and then she will star in a big budget historical drama Kakukaku Shikajika due for release in 2026.
