Husband 'tracked down fleeing wife and killed her as she walked with their baby'
Kulsuma Akter was due to be rehoused just two days before her windpipe and left jugular vein were slashed (Picture: Family Handout/PA Wire) A 'jealous' husband stabbed his wife to death after tracking her down to a refuge she had gone to escape him, a court has heard. Habibur Masum, 26, allegedly launched a 'ferocious' knife attack on Kulsuma Akter, 27, while she pushed their baby's pram in Bradford, West Yorkshire. The mum had fled to a hostel in Bradford 'to escape' her husband's 'violence, jealousyand controlling behaviour', Bradford Crown Court heard. She was due to be rehoused just two days before her windpipe and left jugular vein were slashed. Masum had been on bail conditions which ordered him to keep away from his wife, jurors were told (Picture: West Yorkshire Police/PA Wire) Sign up for all of the latest stories Start your day informed with Metro's News Updates newsletter or get Breaking News alerts the moment it happens. Masum had been on bail conditions which ordered him to keep away from Akter, but in March that year, Akter allegedly told her social worker that her husband had contacted her He had sent her a Snapchat with a threat to kill her brothers if she did not go back to him and the next day he sent another Snapchat video saying he had 'come to her town', jurors were told. He then sent her a photo of the refuge where she was staying, adding: 'I know that you are living in this place. I knew from the first day you moved here. 'If I had any wish to kill you, I could have from the first day. You do not know what you have lost, but one day you will understand. Nobody will love you like I do.' On the day of her death on April 6 last year, however, Akter 'felt safe to leave the refuge' because she had heard from Masum's relatives that he was in Spain, jurors were told. The mum was out walking her seven-month-old son in a pram with a friend when Masum walked with her into a shop. Masum had tracked down his wife in Bradford in the days leading up to the attack and had tried to lure her out of the hostel by pretending to be from a GP's surgery, the prosecution also said in court. Akter and Masum at their wedding Footage seen in court showed Masum then walking with his wife before he spun her and her pram around. He then pulled out a knife from his jacket and began violently attacking Akter, the court heard. Prosecutor Steven Wood KC said: 'He grabs Kulsuma and pushes her into a wall, stabbing her to the body. You will see that Kulsuma then goes to the ground only for the defendant to launch a ferocious and deadly attack. 'When the defendant had finished stabbing her, as a final act of sheer gratuitous violence, he kicks Kulsuma before moving away, but not before ensuring that he disposed of the knife. 'The [prosecution] say this was cold-blooded, calculated, pre-meditated murder. 'Why would the defendant take a knife with him to meet his estranged wife unless he planned to use it?' Akter had escaped previous threats on her life from her partner, who had been married for 18 months in November 2023, the court heard. Mr Wood said: 'Generally, the relationship had been good, but there were already warning signs. Habibur Masum is accused of a 'cold-blooded, calculated, premeditated murder' (Credits: Elizabeth Cook/PA Wire) 'There were previous incidents of his making threats to kill her and in July 2023, she was staying with family members because of his controlling behaviour.' Jurors were told a 'completely innocuous' message from a male colleague to Akter, Masum became violent by slapping her and pulling her hair. The court also heard 'a chilling prediction' made Masum, when he told his wife: 'I am going to murder you, and the police will be taking me'. The next day, he allegedly put a knife to her throat in their bedroom and threatened her over her relationship with the colleague. Masum was arrested that night after a female family member called the police. After denying using violence in a police interview, he was then charged with two offences of assault by beating and one offence of making a threat to kill. Masum denies murdering Ms Akter but has pleaded guilty to manslaughter and possession of a knife. He also denies two charges of assault, one count of making threats to kill and one charge of stalking. The trial continues. Kulsuma had moved from Bangladesh to England to be with her husband Monwara Begum, Kulsuma's mum, said she has been left 'heartbroken' over her youngest daughter's death. She said: 'I am in shock. She was my youngest daughter and I adored her greatly. 'When she moved to the United Kingdom I was alone, but Kulsuma would call me every day by video. The only day I didn't hear from her was the day she was attacked.' Bradford Crown Court heard the allegations of assault and threats to kill relate to two days in November 23. He 'tracked her movements and located her at a safe house, sent her messages of a menacing nature which contained threats to kill another and photos and videos of the area and premises where she was residing'. He is also alleged to have 'loitered in the area of her temporary residence'. The charge alleges he caused her 'alarm or distress' and to 'fear that violence would be used against her'. Got a story? British gran stunned to find her Corfu hotel 'doesn't serve English food'
Susan Edwards, 69, set off for a seven-night stay at the Lido Corfu Sun Hotel (Picture: NCJ Media) A British grandma has been left more than disappointed on her dream all-inclusive holiday to Corfu after there was no English food. Susan Edwards, 69, set off for a seven-night stay at the Lido Corfu Sun Hotel in May with her three cousins and daughter. But the holiday, which cost them £750 each, was 'horrendous from the minute they got there'. The family were expecting impressive meals and drinks on tap, but were left paying €1.50 for water. Due to her ulcerative colitis, Susan, from Westerhope, Newcastle upon Tyne, was unable to eat much of the food on offer, and was upset chips were only available one night out of their week stay. One day out of the whole lot. There was fish, sardines and rice – I was sick to death of looking at rice. 'There was pasta and salads, none of this was marked [labelled]. One night there was a Greek night and they had kebabs, I couldn't eat that. 'It's the worst holiday I've ever been on.' The only all-inclusive drinks that were on offer were wine, lager, ouzo or brandy, leaving Susan to pay extra for a Bacardi and Coke. She said: 'By the time we paid £750 for the holiday, €70 tourist tax for me and my daughter and an extra £450 for both of our meals, I could have been to the Caribbean on that.' TUI UK & I said: 'Our priority is to ensure customers have the best possible holiday experience, so we are sorry to hear that Mrs Edwards felt dissatisfied with her holiday. 'We have been in touch directly with Mrs Edwards to come to a resolution.' Get in touch with our news team by emailing us at webnews@ For more stories like this, check our news page. Women wakes up inside her own coffin after coroner declared her dead
The 88-year-old was placed inside the coffin (Picture: Getty Images) An 88-year-old woman was nearly buried alive after she woke up inside a coffin. The pensioner was found seemingly unresponsive by her husband, 87, on Friday morning at their home in Pilsen, Czech Republic. Assuming she was dead, he called for emergency services, who promptly dispatched a coroner to the scene. 'She wasn't moving, she wasn't breathing,' he told Nedělní Blesk. The coroner pitched up and declared the elderly retiree dead, but the undertakers then arrived to find quite the opposite. After the 'dead' lady was placed in the coffin, she opened her eyes and started breathing. Reports in Czech media are conflicted as to whether the pensioner suddenly opened her eyes in the coffin or whether workers realised she was still breathing. Either way, she was alive and the pensioner was taken to the hospital, where she is still being treated. The woman's husband added: 'The [funeral services] workers put her in a coffin, and when they were right here, they found out that she was alive. The incident happened in the picturesque town of Pilsen (Picture: Getty Images) 'It's serious. I'm completely unhappy about it.' Police have said it is now investigating possible misconduct by the coroner. The coroner's, 1 Koronerská, apologised profusely for the mix-up and said three times in the past they had received calls to say a person was dead, but they turned out alive. This is also not the first time someone has 'come back from the dead'. Morgue workers in a crematorium in Jhunjhunu City, India were shocked when a supposedly dead man began breathing in a crematorium in Jhunjhunu City, India in November last year. Footage showed Rohitash wrapped in a blanket, opening his eyes and looking dazed. An ambulance was quickly called to take him to Rajkiya Bhagwan Das Khetan (BDK) Hospital, where he later died. The man was immediately transferred to the hospital mortuary where he was prepared to be embalmed by morgue attendants Metro has contacted the 1. Koronerská for additional comment.
