California Transgender Athlete Met With Plane Banner at Event

On Friday, a 17-year-old transgender athlete AB Hernandez secured their place in the finals of three events at a competition for California school children while campaign groups flew a banner that read "No Boys in Girls' Sports!" over the event. Newsweek contacted the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF), which organized the competition, for comment on Saturday via telephone and voicemail message outside of regular office hours. The transgender debate in the United States escalated during the 2024 presidential election cycle, as President Donald Trump pledged to minimize transgender athletes' participation in sports that don't match their biological sex. One of his first executive orders mandated that the government only recognize the existence of two sexes-male and female-which he said are "not changeable." Trump took an interest in the California school competition posting earlier this week on Truth Social that California Governor Gavin Newsom, who he branded "Newscum," was illegally allowing "MEN TO PLAY IN WOMEN'S SPORTS" and threatening to withhold federal funding. The Department of Justice (DOJ) on Wednesday announced it is launching an investigation into California Attorney General Rob Bonta and the CIF regarding transgender participation in girls' sports in the state. Over the past few years, a number of sports organizations have introduced bans on transgender participation in women's events including World Athletics, the U.K. Athletics Federation and World Aquatics. On Friday, Hernandez, who was born a biological male, won preliminary heats in the high jump, long jump and triple jump at a California track and field state championship preliminary competition in Clovis, securing their position in Saturday's finals. During the event, a banner reading "NO BOYS IN GIRLS' SPORTS!" was flown over Buchanan High School's Veterans Memorial Stadium by a small aircraft in a protest organized by the Women Are Real and Independent Council on Women's Sports campaign groups. There was also an altercation, with the Clovis Police Department telling Fox News Digital that one person, who they identified as an LGBTQ+ activist, was arrested after allegedly smashing a car window using a flag pole after which pepper spray was deployed. In response to criticism earlier this week, the CIF said it was expanding the pool of competitors and would also give a medal to any "biological female" who lost a medal to a transgender competitor. In a press release the Independent Council on Women's Sport said: "California is beginning to reap the consequences of defying federal law and brazenly harming girls. "How long will Governor Newsom and legislators in this state continue to prioritize granting a few boys the right to take opportunities and recognition away from girls? Not one single boy should ever be in girls' sports. It's the easiest problem in the world to solve-and the most brazen public 'screw you' to female athletes by Democrat leadership." On X, formerly Twitter, former college athlete Riley Gaines, who campaigns against transgender participation in women's sports, wrote: "Plane flies 'No Boys in Girls' Sports' banner at California track and field state championship. AB Hernandez, a boy, will compete in the girls' high jump, triple jump, and long jump finals tomorrow. Great work by WomenAreReal and Independent Council on Women's Sports." In a previous interview with California news outlet Capital & Main, ABHernandez said: "There's nothing I can do about people's actions, just focus on my own. I'm still a child, you're an adult, and for you to act like a child shows how you are as a person." Earlier this week on Truth Social, President Donald Trump wrote: "This week a transitioned Male athlete, at a major event, won 'everything,' and is now qualified to compete in the 'State Finals' next weekend. As a Male, he was a less than average competitor. As a Female, this transitioned person is practically unbeatable." He added: "THIS IS NOT FAIR AND TOTALLY DEMEANING TO WOMEN AND GIRLS...I am ordering local authorities, if necessary, to not allow the transitioned person to compete in the State Finals. This is a totally ridiculous situation!!!" Finals for the California track and field state championship events are due to take place on Saturday. If Hernandez wins any of the three events they are taking part in, it is likely to renew controversy around their participation. Ray Mariano: Down the rabbit hole into Trump's Wonderland

Ray Mariano: Down the rabbit hole into Trump's Wonderland I loved watching Disney's "Alice in Wonderland" with my children and more recently "Alice Through the Looking Glass" with my grandchildren. These movies are full of goofy characters who say things like 'Oh, you can't help that. We're all mad here.' Everything in these movies is the opposite of what you'd expect it to be. Up is down and big is small. But when you're watching the movies with little children, it's just silly fun. Recently, as I watched the funeral of former President Jimmy Carter and listened to the tributes offered about that good and decent man, I couldn't help feeling that I was on the other side of the looking glass — the Mad Hatter's side, where, as Alice said, 'nothing would be what it is because everything would be what it isn't.' There in the church was a president and four former presidents. For better or worse, as men and as presidents, four of the five tried to conduct themselves in a dignified manner. They didn't always succeed. But when they failed, they were contrite and resolved to do better. And then there's Donald Trump. The Red Queen and the bully Much like the Red Queen in the movie, Trump loves to bully and scream at people. Try and imagine any of the other four presidents calling the governor of California 'Newscum.' If they ever did anything like that, the public and media reaction would have been swift and blisteringly harsh. Yet as we now linger on the other side of the looking glass, this disgraceful behavior is somehow acceptable. And it's 'off with their heads' for anyone who has the courage to stand against Trump. In this strange, nonsensical world, 'all ways are my (Trump's) way.' Anyone who says otherwise, including career federal employees, is put on an enemies list and faces firing, investigation and prosecution. Once prided for their independence, now to avoid the Red Queen's wrath, newspapers pull political editorials and satirical cartoons disparaging Trump. Prominent anti-Trump media personalities are being removed or demoted. Trump has even called for certain cable news channels, who offer opposing views, to be shut down. Previously, you would expect a president to console and support victims of catastrophic wildfires that touched tens of thousands. Now, because some of them didn't support Trump on Election Day, what they get are ridicule, threats and lies. Trump's cast of bizarre characters Only in Trump's Wonderland would our current rouges' gallery of unqualified Cabinet nominees be acceptable. It wouldn't be so bad if Trump had just nominated a group of Tweedledees and Tweedledums. But his nomination of Robert Kennedy Jr., a man who has admitted to having a portion of his brain eaten by a worm, threatens the health of every American. The nominations of Matt Gaetz, Pete Hegseth, Dr. Oz and Tulsi Gabbard are distinguished by their misconduct and total lack of anything resembling reasonable qualifications for their respective offices. The single overriding qualification for all of Trump's nominees is that they are blindly loyal to the Red Queen And then we have the Mad Hatter, Elon Musk, appointed to lead an imaginary department that doesn't exist. Only in Trump's Wonderland would you expect a man whose company holds nearly 100 different government contracts with 17 federal agencies totaling $3 billion to be an objective adviser. Only in Trump's Wonderland would Rocky Balboa and two others be appointed as imaginary 'Special Ambassadors' to Hollywood to help bring back 'the Golden Age of Hollywood.' Day 1 and beyond On the very first day of the Red Queen's reign, we saw a dizzying list of pronouncements and actions that defy what we used to call reality. Of all of them, Trump's pardon and commutation of sentences for men who attacked and brutally beat police officers on Jan. 6 is the most troubling. Trump calls these criminals the real victims. His unthinkable action is frighteningly similar to Hitler's pardoning of all Nazis including those involved in a failed insurrection. Trump revoked an executive order put in place in 1965 that bars discrimination in hiring in the federal government. He ordered health agencies to pause warning Americans about serious illness like bird flu and had critical data on disease transmission scrubbed from government websites. In action that the Red Queen would envy, Trump is conducting an unprecedented retribution campaign looking to purge thousands of FBI field agents, leaving America vulnerable to terrorist attacks. Musk wants to put the U.S. Treasury on a blockchain, the technology that underpins bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, including Musk's dogecoin, jeopardizing our entire monetary system. In a bizarre and dangerous pronouncement, Trump told the world that the people of Gaza should permanently leave their homeland and that the U.S. would take over and own Gaza, putting Americans directly in the line of fire. And as unthinkable as it may seem, in Trump's dystopian Wonderland, the Ku Klux Klan walks freely around town posting flyers for their meetings. To pay for tax cuts for the richest Americans, the Queen's loyal guards now plot to remove health insurance from millions of vulnerable Americans while also plotting to cut Social Security— both unthinkable before we passed through the looking glass. Defying reality, every day Trump and Musk brazenly and publicly break new laws knowing that Republicans in Congress, much like the terrified guards who got caught painting the roses red, will do whatever the Queen commands. In Wonderland, while Trump is burning down government institutions, most Democratic leaders, afraid to anger the Queen, sit silently and limit their opposition to meaningless posts on social media. All this and more because of a man who called the violent attacks on Jan. 6 'a day of love.' Up is down and big is small. Watching the animated movie "Alice in Wonderland" with little children can be harmless fun. But in 2025 America, as we peer through the looking glass, what we see is a horror film, with real-life consequences. And the movie is just beginning. Email Raymond V. Newsom Heads to Washington to Meet With Trump

Gov. Gavin Newsom of California headed to Washington on Tuesday to meet with President Trump and seek disaster aid for Los Angeles communities destroyed in last month's firestorms, his latest attempt to mend ties with the White House as other Democrats have grown increasingly alarmed by the new administration. Mr. Newsom and Mr. Trump, who have sparred publicly but also worked closely together during the president's first term, were scheduled to meet at the White House on Wednesday, according to a person with knowledge of the meeting. Mr. Trump has repeatedly threatened to withhold disaster aid if California does not change how it manages its water, a perennially charged issue in an arid state where officials have to balance the needs of agriculture, ecosystems and thirsty cities. The president has also said that he wanted California to enact a voter identification law in order to obtain federal funding that would help Los Angeles recover from the wildfires. Last month, wind-swept wildfires in the Pacific Palisades neighborhood of Los Angeles and Altadena, Calif., killed 29 people and left thousands of homes in ashes. Mr. Trump almost immediately blamed Mr. Newsom and other Democratic leaders in California for the destruction and referred to the governor as 'Newscum.' It is expected to cost tens of billions of dollars to rebuild the damaged communities. Mr. Newsom is an ambitious Democrat who spent much of 2024 blasting Mr. Trump, the Republican presidential nominee, as he helped campaign for the Democratic ticket, but he has toned down his wrath since the fires devastated the Los Angeles region. He greeted Mr. Trump on the tarmac in Los Angeles on Jan. 24, and the two promised to work together to advance the region's recovery. The day before the president's visit, Mr. Newsom signed legislation that approved $2.5 billion for the recovery work, which he said he hoped would be reimbursed by the federal government. On Monday, Democratic lawmakers in California passed a pair of bills to spend $25 million on litigation against the federal government and $25 million to offer legal aid to undocumented immigrants. Mr. Newsom in November called for swift legislative action to buttress the state from Mr. Trump's conservative agenda, but the governor has said little about the proposals this year, taking a more cooperative approach to dealing with the president. He left the state on Tuesday without signing the bills, and he cannot take action on them until he returns to California later this week.
