Dublin man accused of pulling shotgun out of tracksuit bottoms in McDonald's raid
Craig Douglas (24) of Belclare Park, Ballymun, Dublin is charged with robbery, dangerous driving and Garda obstruction. An armed robber went to a McDonald's, pulled a shotgun out of his tracksuit bottoms and pointed it at staff while people were buying their morning coffee and breakfast, it is alleged. Craig Douglas (24) is accused of carrying out a 'broad daylight' raid at the fast food restaurant in Dublin yesterday, leaving staff traumatised before speeding dangerously off in a getaway car. He was refused bail at Dublin District Court this afternoon and was remanded in custody to next week, for DPP directions. Mr Douglas, of Belclare Park, Ballymun, Dublin is charged with robbery, dangerous driving and garda obstruction. The court heard he is denying the allegations. Craig Douglas (24) News in 90 Seconds - May 30th Objecting to bail, a Garda told Judge John King the robbery happened at McDonald's, Gulliver's Retail Park, Northwood, Santry yesterday when a man entered the restaurant and 'calmly' sat down for a few minutes until customers left. He then approached the counter, took a shotgun from his tracksuit bottoms and pointed it at staff, robbing the till which had no money in it. The robber fled the scene in a car that had been stolen elsewhere earlier that morning. He drove out, crashed into a metal barrier and continued on to St Margaret's Road where he sped, undertaking traffic. The getaway car was later found in St Margaret's Halting site and when gardai arrived, they saw Mr Douglas in the back seat of another car. It was alleged he violently resisted arrest. Gardai found the keys of the getaway vehicle in the car he had been in. It was alleged a tshirt and runners he was wearing were distinctive and matched those worn by the robbery suspect. A tracksuit was seized from a caravan. In her objections, the garda cited the level of violence used in the robbery, the fear it caused and the fact that it was a 'busy public location.' 'It happened in broad daylight where members of the public were present, buying their morning coffee and breakfast,' the garda said. The shotgun had not been found and the garda feared the accused could have possession of it if released on bail. Gardai were relieved that nobody was injured despite the 'dangerous crime spree,' the court heard. Restaurant staff were traumatised and the accused 'seems to have zero remorse,' the garda said. Applying for bail, defence solicitor Matthew De Courcy said Mr Douglas was presumed innocent, his position was 'he didn't do this' and he made no admissions in interview. Mr De Courcy said the man in the CCTV had his face covered and gardai were effectively identifying him by his clothing. The defence would say the clothes were not distinctive, but were 'generic' and the link to his client was 'tenuous.' Mr Douglas was found in a different location in a different car. Mr Douglas was living with his family, 'upskilling' on a construction course and was 'a young man with a bright future,' Mr De Courcy said. Judge King refused bail and remanded him in custody to appear in Cloverhill District Court on June 4.

Donncha O'Callaghan on why he's embracing the ‘dad bod' after 20 years as an athlete
'Like, who gives a s**t that you're PB-ing at 46?'' The former rugby star is now better known as a radio and TV presenter after retiring from the game in 2018. And the father-of-four says he's loving his more laidback diet and exercise regime after 20 years as an elite athlete. Donncha O'Callaghan with Maverick Hernandez Sanchez, Alicia Ottun and Katie and Ellie Talbot 'It's not sustainable,' Donncha reflects on his sporting prime. 'I'm gone the other way totally with that — I'm fully embracing it. 'Within professional circles, it's very easy to be on top of things — your nutrition is looked after, all your physio and deep tissue massage. 'It isn't until you come away that you get an appreciation for how difficult it is. 'From rugby, it's mad, you don't see, like, a chicken breast — that's 40 grams of protein. You see two scoops of rice or pasta as 50 grams of carbohydrates. Rugby legend turned TV personality Donncha O'Callaghan News in 90 Seconds - May 30th '[You're] looking at the nutrients as opposed to, 'Oh my God, that tastes amazing!' 'To be fair, it's quite enjoyable, because there's no accountability, there's no DEXA scans, there's no millimetres and skin folds of fat, so you can be a bit looser,' he continues. 'I look at some of my teammates and they're in better condition now than when they were playing. 'What a waste that was … like, when we needed you to be in incredible shape, you weren't!' Munster legend Donncha shares four children with engineer wife, Jenny Harte: Sophie (14), Anna (12), Robin (11) and Jake (9). Donncha with his family So he's thrown his towering 6ft 6ins support behind Tesco Ireland's new Stronger Starts Cooks initiative, a free six-week programme aimed at supporting children's health and wellbeing, which is set to be delivered to almost 3,000 pupils across 42 primary schools this year. 'Looking at this research, 92 per cent of parents felt they'd love more cooking within the curriculum,' he quotes a survey conducted by the store, 'and we feel the same. 'It isn't until you go into secondary [school] that you start to pick up Home Economics, if you're into it. 'Other than that, there isn't a whole lot of knowledge about it. So I think it's a good thing if you can do it, and family-wise, get around. Donncha runs out of Ireland 'The big one we do is, if we're doing a roast on a Sunday, everyone gets involved with different things. So Robin, my little girl, makes the best stuffing in the world, and Anna is a dinger at mashed potato. But then, honestly, it's like something you'd see with Gordon Ramsay — if the mash isn't good, everyone's telling her!' The popular host is now also home for breakfast after leaving RTÉ 2FM after five years on the air last year. And the 46-year-old, who quit just weeks after co-host Doireann Garrihy, maintains it was the right call. 'I don't miss the early hours, it was really cruel,' says Donncha, who was also flanked by Carl Mullan on the Breakfast Show. 'If I was in Dublin, I was up at three. 'But I do miss that team, and obviously Doireann and Carl I love to bits, so I do miss hanging around with them. 'I actually do miss presenting a little bit as well, I didn't think I would… but I think it's something you have to enjoy doing. Donncha on Ireland's Fittest Family 'With breakfast radio, you can't bullsh*t it — you have to be a morning person.' On TV, Donncha also joined the Ireland's Fittest Family line-up as a coach back in 2017. But the Cork native reveals how he'd secretly love to take part in another reality TV hit as a competitor. 'We love The [Great British] Bake Off, genuinely,' tells the star, who watched Tommy Tiernan's turn on the recent Great Celebrity Bake Off for Stand Up To Cancer on Channel 4. 'Like, we're addicted to it. 'I'd certainly love to give something like that [a go]. But, then again, I can't cope when it goes wrong. 'The kids all love baking, and they're good. 'I wish I was better at sticking with the process, but I'll always come up with some way of [taking shortcuts] — if the cake's ready in 20 minutes at 180C, if I crank it up to 200C, it'll be done in ten.' Read more Although he still weight trains, as much for mind as body, the Ireland rugby great laughs that he hasn't succumbed to the Hyrox craze: 'I slag a few of my friends that do it. 'If I could still do stuff like that, I'd be playing. But I do an awful lot of what I like doing. 'I train with a few buddies of mine — I'm actually training with [former Ireland rugby international] Tomás O'Leary at the moment. 'One thing I learned is I don't need to go to the well all the time. 'Whereas rugby, you finish empty — no matter what you do, you max out. 'It happened me on holidays, I was lifting weights, and I tried to go after a few weights that I hit on before and threw out my back, and I was no good for a week on the water slides. 'Like, who gives a s**t that you're PB-ing at 46?'

Water safety warning for Bank Holiday weekend following ‘alarming' rise in number of drownings
'In May 2025, the number of drownings has doubled compared to the same period in 2024, bringing tragic loss to families across the country' A water safety warning has been issued ahead of the June Bank Holiday weekend following an 'alarming' rise in the number of drownings so far this year. With a ten per cent increase in drownings so far this year, compared to the same period last year, the Irish Coast Guard, RNLI and Water Safety Ireland are urging the public to take extra precautions. Although the weather forecast is for heavy showers, low temperatures and strong breezes this weekend, more people are expected to visit beaches, lakes, and rivers. Stock image News in 90 Seconds - May 29th The RNLI said now is the time to prioritise safety by checking the weather and tides before heading out. 'And if walking the shoreline, be vigilant for incoming tides that can cause strandings,' the advice reads. 'Be aware of rip currents - strong currents can pull even the most experienced swimmers out to sea and swim with others. 'Also, let someone ashore know of your plans and return time." Recent drowning tragedies include those of Matt Sibanda (18) who will be laid to rest following his funeral mass this Saturday. Matt was one of two teenagers who died when they got into difficulty while swimming off Buncrana on May 10 last. His friend, Emmanuel Familola (16) was laid to rest on May 17. Kevin Whitney, Head of Operations Section at the Irish Coast Guard highlighted the alarming rise in drownings this year. 'In May 2025, the number of drownings has doubled compared to the same period in 2024, bringing tragic loss to families across the country,' he said. 'As the June bank holiday typically marks the start of summer celebrations for many, we are urging everyone to be mindful of the dangers, plan ahead, and follow the appropriate safety guidelines for your activity.' Man banished to Cork after alleged slash-hook attack during burglary
Kyle Conway was charged with aggravated burglary while in the possession of a slash-hook and a bottle of suspected ammonia A man in his 40s has been barred from a midlands town after appearing in court charged with criminal damage and carrying out an alleged aggravated burglary while armed with a slash-hook and suspected ammonia. Kyle Conway (45) of Lakeland Drive, Mullingar, Co Westmeath appeared before a sitting of Longford District Court to face a series of charges resulting from an incident at 30 Greenpark Close, Mullingar, Co Westmeath on February 27, 2025. They included two counts of criminal damage, one of which involved damage being caused to a car with the other relating to the front door of a house. On the same date, Conway was also charged with aggravated burglary while in the possession of a slash-hook and a bottle of suspected ammonia. Conway, who wore dark tracksuit bottoms and a two tone hoodie top, stood impassively beside his defence barrister Christina Burke BL, as Detective Garda Brendan Hogan gave evidence of arrest, charge and caution. He said Conway made no reply to any of the charges and handed a true copy of each charge after he was brought to Mullingar Garda Station. A bench warrant for Conway's arrest was also executed when the accused failed to show up for a scheduled court appearance in Mullingar on May 1. A covered up Kyle Conway leaving Longford Courthouse. When pressed by Judge Bernadette Owens as to why he was absent, Ms Burke confided her client had been 'going through some personal matters', prompting Conway to interject to contend he had no option to stay at home that day. 'She (partner) was working that day and I couldn't go as I had to mind the kids,' he said. Giving evidence, Det Gda Hogan also revealed directions had been received from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for Conway to stand trial in connection to a separate violent disorder incident at Mill House, Canal Avenue, Mullingar on July 13 last year. He said there were no objections to bail, subject to a number of conditions. Kyle Conway News in 90 Seconds - May 28th They included requirements for Conway to stay out of Mullingar in its entirety outside of designated court appearances and to reside at an address at Chestnut Crescent, Bridgemount, Carrigaline, Co Cork. He was also ordered to sign on daily at Bandon Garda Station, obey a 9pm to 7am curfew and have no contact with the alleged injured party Lucy Dinnegan and her family, including via social media. Judge Owens, in reading out those list of conditions, also ordered Conway to refrain from associating with three or more persons in public at any one time and to steer clear of members of the Nevin/Myers families. Asked if he understood the court's order and the possible ramifications that could follow if he breached those terms, Conway simply replied: 'I do Judge, yeah.' Conway was consequently remanded on bail to a sitting of Mullingar District Court on June 12.
