ESPN, Big East agree to six-year digital rights deal

ESPN and the Big East Conference have not been in business with each other since 2013, but that's about to change. As ESPN prepares to launch its direct-to-consumer platform this fall, it has reached a six-year digital rights agreement with the Big East, the parties confirmed Tuesday. Big East sporting events are not returning to linear ESPN as a result of the deal, as the league's partners on that front are Fox, NBC and TNT Sports. Instead, ESPN takes over for FloSports as a digital partner. The agreement will see 25 nonconference men's basketball games featuring Big East teams move to ESPN+ starting this upcoming season. ESPN+ will also carry a minimum of 75 women's basketball games and 200 Olympic sports events. It's a direct deal between the Worldwide Leader and the conference, not a sublicense, and the Big East will produce all the games in question. "We're pleased to welcome the BIG East back to ESPN," Nick Dawson, ESPN senior vice president, programming and acquisitions, said in a statement. "This agreement returns one of the country's premier conferences and its tradition of excellence to ESPN platforms. We look forward to this new chapter in our relationship with the BIG East." "This exciting partnership with ESPN reinforces our commitment to placing BIG East teams front and center on the leading digital sports platform," BIG East commissioner Val Ackerman said in a statement. "Streaming on ESPN+ gives all 22 of our sports -- especially women's basketball and Olympic sports -- the visibility they've earned and the access our fans expect. We look forward to delivering elevated coverage and a streamlined viewing experience to fans and family members who want to follow BIG East action across our wide array of sports offerings." --Field Level Media Field Level Media 2023 - All Rights Reserved

Big East, ESPN reunite with 6-year media rights deal

The Big East Conference and ESPN announced a six-year digital media rights deal on Tuesday. Big East Commissioner Val Ackerman said in a statement that the agreement gives 'all 22 of our sports — especially women's basketball and Olympic sports — the visibility they've earned and the access our fans expect.' 'This exciting partnership with ESPN reinforces our commitment to placing Big East teams front and center on the leading digital sports platform,' Ackerman said. ESPN had the rights to the Big East from 1980 to 2013. The revived partnership comes after ESPN lost Big Ten media rights to Fox, NBC and CBS in 2022. 'We're pleased to welcome the Big East back to ESPN,' Nick Dawson, the network's senior vice president of programming and acquisitions, said in a statement. 'This agreement returns one of the country's premier conferences and its tradition of excellence to ESPN platforms. We look forward to this new chapter in our relationship with the Big East.' ESPN+ will stream over 300 Big East events annually. Financial terms of the deal were not included in the announcement. The Big East wrapped up a competitive 2024-2025 campaign led by the UConn women's basketball team, which won its 12th national title in April. The St. John's men's basketball team had a strong regular season, earning a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament before being eliminated in the second round by No. 10 Arkansas. ___ AP college sports:

NICK DAWSON: ‘For 16 years, I felt only hatred towards my twin brother's killer, but meeting him changed both our lives forever'

At a prison just outside Milton Keynes, in a silent chapel, in a small circle of chairs, Nick Dawson sat beside his wife and waited to meet the man who had tortured and murdered his identical twin, Simon. This man, along with one other, had kicked and beaten 30-year-old Simon until he was unconscious. They removed his watch, stole his bank card, revived him enough to learn his PIN, then threw him into a pond to drown. For 16 years, Nick had viewed these murderers, Craig Roberts and Carl Harrison, as sub-human – evil monsters. He had fantasised about torturing and killing them. Now he was going to talk calmly, face to face with Roberts, the apparent ringleader of the two, and Nick felt terrified. Was he being disloyal to his twin? 'Deep down, I knew it was the right thing to do,' he says. 'There was something driving me on.'

Former South Park BMX Track Association treasurer charged with stealing $124,000

The former treasurer for the South Park BMX Track Association has been charged with stealing more than $100,000 from the organization and using the money for her own benefit. Jennifer Meares was the treasurer for the track association for the last seven years. It wasn't until a contractor didn't get paid the $37,000 he was owed that Meares showed up on the radar. "I was sick to my stomach. That's the best way to put it," said board president Nick Dawson. Dawson still can't come to terms with learning someone he trusted stole all but $200 from the association's bank account. "This is like the most unfathomable thing that you could do, I think," Dawson added. Dawson said the former treasurer and BMX parent is accused of taking $124,000 and using it for things like "jewelry, clothing, shoes, trips." A search warrant served on the association's bank account revealed Meares wrote herself 28 checks totaling close to $34,000. In addition to outfitting her wardrobe, the records showed multiple payments to credit cards and debit purchases made at businesses such as gas stations, restaurants and bars, convenience stores, auto parts stores, DoorDash, and "You're affecting everyone, even your own kid. You're taking away from our ability to provide a better experience for him, not just every other kid," Dawson said. Nicole Jankowski said her family has been coming to the track for years. KDKA-TV caught up with her while her 3-year-old son was getting in some laps. She said she's disgusted to hear someone, especially a parent, would steal from children and hopes justice is served. "It makes me sad thinking something could disrupt us being able to use this or they wouldn't be able to upkeep it anymore. It's really sad," said Nicole Jankowski. An arrest warrant has been issued for Meares. In the meantime, Dawson said the association has been holding fundraisers and has started a GoFundMe to try to recoup some of the stolen money.
