Yankees add infield depth with latest signing
The post Yankees add infield depth with latest signing appeared first on ClutchPoints. The New York Yankees are in the middle of a rough stretch. Aaron Boone's captain, Aaron Judge, surpassed 30 home runs against the Toronto Blue Jays, but his team lost. However, the Yankees' defense has been just as bad as their offense. Their infield, including Jazz Chisholm Jr. at third base, has been ugly all season. New York added a player who could help there: Nicky Lopez. Advertisement Lopez won a Gold Glove in 2024 with the Chicago White Sox. He spent parts of the 2025 season with the Los Angeles Angels and the Chicago Cubs. The 30-year-old third baseman joined the Yankees on a minor league deal, according to MLB Insider Robert Murray. He comes in as a player who could spell Chisholm Jr. at third and revitalize a poor defense. Lopez could be the answer for New York if he can make his way to the major leagues. However, the Yankees are not depending on him to be the answer at third base. Boone, general manager Brian Cashman, and the New York front office are targeting the top third basemen on this year's trade market. In a best-case scenario, Lopez is able to find his swing in the minor leagues. If he does, his defense is good enough to promote him back to the major leagues. Boone needs flexibility in the infield defensively, as well as replacements who can help the Yankees lock down close wins. New York has plenty of experience with poor defense in crucial games. The Yankees' defensive collapse in Game 5 of the 2024 World Series was a nightmare. Boone and the team will try to do everything they can to avoid that happening again. Advertisement Lopez is a former Gold Glove winner with the Cubs, but signing him is a calculated risk for New York. They will still try to make other moves to fix their problem at third base as they fight to get out of their team-wide slump. Yankees Sign Former Cubs Infielder Nicky Lopez After Falling Out of AL East Lead
Yankees Sign Former Cubs Infielder Nicky Lopez After Falling Out of AL East Lead originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Chicago Cubs released an infielder before the 2025 MLB season could get underway. He eventually made his way back to the team before being sent away once more. Advertisement Now, the New York Yankees, after losing four of their last five games, are picking up the former Cubs infielder. According to Robert Murray on Twitter/X, the Yankees are signing Nicky Lopez to a minor league deal. The new Yankees infielder has bounced around the league since the start of the year. He played five games with the Los Angeles Angels, made his way back to the Cubs, and was then signed by the Arizona Diamondbacks. Lopez never made the Diamondbacks' Major League roster, and he was only in the organization from May 27th to June 1st. But, he's back with a new team, his fourth this season since being released by the Cubs. Advertisement Chicago Cubs manager Craig Counsell (11) walks to the mound to make a pitching change during the fifth inning against the Philadelphia Phillies at Citizens Bank Hartline-Imagn Images In his Major League stint with the Cubs in 2025, he played in 14 games. In his 18 at-bats, Lopez had one hit, two runs scored, one RBI, four walks, and three strikeouts. He struggled offensively and couldn't stick on the Major League roster. Now, while not on the Yankees' Major League roster, he'll get a chance to play in the Minor Leagues and try to make a comeback. Lopez, in Triple-A this season, played in 24 games and has a .620 OPS. In his Minor League career, he has a .771 OPS and a .294 batting average. It's yet to translate to the big leagues, but Lopez will look to do so with the Yankees. Report: Yankees sign INF Nicky Lopez to minor league deal
July 3 - The New York Yankees signed veteran infielder Nicky Lopez to a minor league deal, FanSided reported Thursday. The Yankees had previously designated infielder CJ Alexander for assignment, and the Los Angeles Dodgers claimed him off waivers from New York earlier Thursday. The Yankees have been struggling defensively in recent weeks, and Lopez, 30, could provide a steady glove. Lopez was an American League Gold Glove Award finalist last year at second base with the Chicago White Sox. He has made 292 starts at second base, 265 at shortstop and 49 at third base in his major league career. However, Lopez was batting .056 (1-for-18) for the Chicago Cubs over 14 games when they decided to designate him for assignment in May. He started the season with the Los Angeles Angels and played in four games, going 0-for-6 at the plate. Lopez is a career .245 hitter over 686 MLB games with the Kansas City Royals (2019-23), Atlanta Braves (2023), White Sox, Angels and Cubs. His best season came in 2021, when he batted .300 and recorded 21 doubles and 43 RBIs in 151 games for Kansas City. Alexander, 28, did not get into a game for the Yankees. He has played 10 major league games, including six for the Athletics earlier this season, and batted .160 (4-for-25). --Field Level Media

Diamondbacks infielder abandons contract to sign with a different MLB team
The Arizona Diamondbacks lost a veteran infielder from their organization this week. Nicky Lopez activated the release clause in his contract to become a free agent and pursue a spot with another MLB team. Advertisement The news, reported by Robert Murray, indicates that Lopez likely reached a date by which he was supposed to be called-up to MLB or otherwise could choose his own release. Lopez is 30 years old and can play all over the infield. This season at Triple-A Reno, Lopez was batting .267. He has already been in three organizations this season. He previously spent time with the Cubs and Angels. For those two MLB teams on the season, Lopez was 1-for-24. MORE: Mariners' switch-pitcher Jurrangelo Cijntje receives major career update Lopez has just one magnificent season on his MLB ledger, when he batted .300 in 2021 for the Royals. Advertisement Otherwise, he's been underwhelming, a career .245 hitter with limited power whose value comes from his versatility. Lopez has played for the White Sox and Braves in addition to the teams already mentioned. He likely won't be a high priority free agent, but a team out there should sign him as Triple-A depth in case of an injury at any number of positions that Lopez could fill in for at the MLB level. In the meantime, Lopez just knows he won't be putting on a Diamondbacks uniform. MORE MLB NEWS:
