Coronet Peak's four-legged frenzy

The men's town dog race gets off to a flyer at last year's Dog Derby. PHOTO: ODT FILES It's your one chance in the year to take part in a massed charge down a snowy mountain with your pooch. The 51st annual Dog Derby at Queenstown's Coronet Peak this Saturday could be described as a demonstration of the unspoken bond of master and dog. However, ski area manager Nigel Kerr's description is more succinct — "chaos". Either way, Kerr, who'll be on the course with his own dog, Oscar, says it's one of his favourite days of the year. "It's a sporting event, but for most of the people taking part, it's about spending time with your dog." As usual, there'll be a country race for farm working dogs and their humans, separate men's and women's races for town dogs, and the kids' race for 7-13-year-olds. The hooter's going off at 12.30pm for the kids' race, with the remaining categories starting at 10-minute intervals: women's town race, men's town race, and finally the country race at 1pm. Kerr says entrants can register on the day, in a tent at the Greengates carpark from 10am, but urges people to register online, by 4pm tomorrow, as it'll be busy on the mountain. This year's Bark Off is being hosted by Canyon Brewing, in Arthurs Point, from 3pm.

More info A bin lorry and a bus have crashed in a Scottish village, with a 14-year-old passenger understood to have been injured. The alarm was raised in the afternoon on Monday, July 14 and the emergency services were called to Foxton Drive in Thornton, reports the Daily Record. It is understood that the bus was full of passengers when the crash occurred and that ambulance crews were in attendance. Locals were left shocked after the footage taken on the bus after the incident was shared online. A short video taken following the collision showed a side window of the bus shattered in as a result. Details of injuries have not been released but there are reports that a 14-year-old boy was hurt in the incident. One person wrote: "My 14 year old son is pictured in the video. He's currently at the [Victoria Hospital] with a number of cuts and glass in his eye." Another added: "Nice to read all the concerned comments. My grandson is in A&E at the moment due to this incident." Fife Council have since confirmed that the bin lorry belonged to them and they are investigating the circumstances of the crash. Stagecoach East Scotland have also launched a probe following the incident. A spokesperson for Stagecoach East Scotland said: "We can confirm that one of our vehicles was involved in an incident on Foxton Drive on Monday afternoon. 'Safety is our absolute priority and we will carry out a full investigation into the circumstances." A spokesperson for the local authority added: "Fife Council's head of protective services Nigel Kerr confirmed the council is currently investigating the circumstances of a minor accident involving one of our bin lorries and a bus earlier this afternoon." Police Scotland have been approached for comment.
