Tanishk Bagchi reacts to reports of 'Saiyaara' title track being copied from One Direction and Jubin Nautiyal's songs: ‘Didn't steal anything'

Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda 's 'Saiyaara' has been making headlines right from the word go. The movie's box office numbers to the crazy fan reaction videos from the theatres, everything about 'Saiyaara' is going viral. Not to forget, the title track, which is making the audience emotional and is ranking on the charts. But as they say, with fame comes controversy. 'Saiyaara' title track faced backlash for parts of the tune sounding similar to One Direction's 'Night Changes' and Jubin Nautiyal 's 'Humnava Mere'. Defending the song and its composition, Tanishk Bachgi, in a recent interview, confessed that there can't be similarities, but the song wasn't stolen. Tanishk Bagchi reacts to 'Saiyaara' song controversy While speaking to India Today, Tanishk Bagchi, the man behind the title track of 'Saiyaara', said that people will always comment on one or the other thing, no matter what he does. 'But ultimately, the song will go wherever it's destined to, and that's what's happening with Saiyaara too,' he added. To put the reports at rest, he broke down the composition and mentioned, 'As for the comparisons, if you look at the melody, the chords are the same. The A minor scale has just about 3-4 chords, but every melody has a different soul. That doesn't mean that anything was stolen.' He added that even if he had been able to steal, it wouldn't have been easy to make the song such a big hit. He continued, "All said and done, we didn't steal anything. The similarities are fine, it can happen, but it's not like we did it on purpose. Idhar se utha ke udhar nahi kiya (we didn't pick and add anything). We worked on the emotion of the song, and that worked. That's the magic of the track 'Saiyaara'." He concluded by highlighting the global success of the song. 'There is no collaboration with foreign artists; everyone associated is home-grown, so that's a big achievement for me. I did have an intuition that this could go viral, but I never expected it to top global charts.' He credited hard work and pure intent for the success of the track.

Tanishk Bagchi responds to claims that Saiyaara song was copied from a One Direction track: ‘Whatever I do…'

Although Saiyaara's massive success does not fundamentally imply that Bollywood is back or that its slump is over, the respite that it has offered an ailing industry cannot be underestimated. At a time when even big-ticket movies featuring massive stars are bombing, the musical romantic drama emerging as a blockbuster, despite starring two fairly new actors in the lead roles, has offered Bollywood a chance to set its priorities straight. Besides its story, treatment, and performances by Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda, the one aspect that Saiyaara has been receiving the most praise for is its music. While all its songs are currently trending, the one that soared higher than any other is the title track, crafted by composer-singer Tanishk Bagchi. It's not just reigning over Spotify's Top 50 chart in India, but is also at the fourth spot in the audio streaming platform's global list. Although the track has been receiving much praise from most quarters, it has also found itself caught in a controversy after some claimed that parts of the song sounded similar to English–Irish pop boy band One Direction's 'Night Changes' and playback singer Jubin Nautiyal's 'Humnava Mere'. However, Tanishk Bagchi has categorically denied these claims. 'Whatever I do, people will have something to say because they don't have [anything better to do]. They keep on looking for opportunities to put me down,' he claimed during a chat with India Today. The composer added, 'But ultimately, the song will go wherever it's destined to, and that's what's happening with Saiyaara too. As for the comparisons, if you look at the melody, the chords are the same. The A minor scale has just about 3-4 chords but every melody has a different soul. That doesn't mean that anything was stolen. Even if you can do that, it's really difficult to make it a hit.' 'All said and done, we didn't steal anything. The similarities are fine, it can happen, but it's not like we did it on purpose. Idhar se utha ke udhar nahi kiya (we didn't pick and add anything). We worked on the emotion of the song, and that worked. That's the magic of the track Saiyaara,' he maintained, adding, 'The best thing is that it's an original Hindi song, a pure Hindi song. There is no collaboration with foreign artists; everyone associated is home-grown, so that's a big achievement for me.'

Tanishk Bagchi denies Saiyaara track being copied from One Direction, Jubin Nautiyal

The title track of 'Saiyaara' is bringing joy not just to audiences with its melody and lyrics, but also to the makers, as it climbs the global charts. The Tanishk Bagchi-composed song currently sits at #4 on Spotify's Top Global chart, and recently topped the Viral Top 50 the growing adulation, the team has also faced criticism for parts of the tune sounding similar to One Direction's 'Night Changes' and Jubin Nautiyal's 'Humnava Mere'. In an exclusive chat with India Today, Tanishk denied these I do, people will have something to say because they don't have [anything better to do]. They keep on looking for opportunities to put me down. But ultimately, the song will go wherever it's destined to, and that's what's happening with Saiyaara too. That doesn't mean that anything was stolen. Even if you can do that, it's really difficult to make it a hit," he shared. Bagchi further shared, "All said and done, we didn't steal anything. The similarities are fine, it can happen, but it's not like we did it on purpose. Idhar se utha ke udhar nahi kiya (we didn't pick and add anything). We worked on the emotion of the song, and that worked. That's the magic of the track 'Saiyaara'."The music composer discussed the song's global popularity, sharing that while this was something he had always dreamt about, he didn't know it would surpass his expectations."The best thing is that it's an original Hindi song, a pure Hindi song. There is no collaboration with foreign artists; everyone associated is home-grown, so that's a big achievement for me. I did have an intuition that this could go viral, but I never expected it to top global charts. I think it's purely the hard work on the song and the pure intention that worked in its favour," he added that his team and even his family, including his mother and sister, are following the charts continuously and keeping him updated about the song's Bagchi further shared that he's always looked at as someone who only does recreation, and hence 'Saiyaara's' success will also help me break out of that mould. "People do come to me saying only I can do the recreation, and I know I will have to indulge it. I can't say no to everything, even though it only gets me abused. But this song has proved that I can also give an original superhit too. The issue is that these opportunities don't come every day. If I get enough songs like Saiyaara, then there would be no need to do recreation. But till then, I have to also survive," he shared.'Saiyaara' is currently running in theatres. Directed by Mohit Suri, the film features Aneet Padda and Ahaan Panday in the lead roles.- EndsYou May Also Like

The similarities in melody and tone have sparked a heated debate, though the makers have yet to respond. Déjà vu in the piano intro? Is Saiyaara's title track copied from Jubin Nautiyal and One Direction?

Actors Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda's 'Saiyaara' is making headlines, and for various reasons. From the highest opening for a debutant to fans going crazy for the movie in the theatres. But there have been other headlines speculating whether the film was copied from a Korean movie, 'A Moment To Remember'. Now people have moved to the movie's songs, and if they have been copied from the former British boy-band One Direction and Indian singer Jubin specifically, the title track of Saiyaara, a soaring ballad that's been topping charts and social reels, is now under fire for sounding, let's say, suspiciously familiar. The whispers began online, and now they've grown louder. Is 'Saiyaara's' main theme copied from One Direction's 'Night Changes' and Jubin Nautiyal's 'Humnava Mere'? The intro is a haunting piano melody that sets the tone for 'Saiyaara's' heartbreak anthem. But if you've ever cried to 'Night Changes' during your teenage years, you'll notice something jarringly similar. The two intros are near identical, right down to the key, the note progression, and the emotional timbre. The only major difference? Saiyaara's tempo is slowed, almost like someone pressed the heartbreak button twice. As the song progresses, listeners online claim that the rest of the composition borrows heavily from Jubin Nautiyal's 'Humnava Mere'. From the rhythm to the pacing, the similarity is undeniable. In fact, a fan video circulating on Facebook even lines up both tracks side by side, and the resemblance is hard to a look at the video: (Video Credit: Facebook/Sunit Singh Manisha)Inspiration in music isn't new. Artists borrow, adapt, and reimagine all the time. There's been no official response from the music director or the production team. But with social media receipts now part of every public court, the debate continues to gain the accusations, 'Saiyaara' is still drawing crowds, and the chemistry between Panday and Padda, paired with the film's emotional core, is connecting with audiences. The film's blend of drama, romance, and music is clearly working.- Ends
