Woman discovers rare painting at Goodwill for just $2.99

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) — They say treasure can be found in the most curious of places. That's exactly what happened to one Miami Valley woman when she bought a painting at a local thrift store. Little did she know: It was much more than she bargained for. 'I love to go thrifting,' says Dayton photographer Marissa Alcorn. 'I thrift for the stuff for my studio mostly. Or my house – my house is 90% thrifted.' Deals and steals for a fraction of the price. She says that was her goal one night in mid-January. Cedarville professor hopes to make global impact 'My fiancé Arron and I had just got done with dinner he convinced me to go to a Goodwill store,' she says. 'We did a lap around the store and didn't find anything and I was, like, 'see, I didn't find anything, I told you I didn't want to be here,' and this lady brought a cart out right before we were about to leave and I saw the corner of the frame.' She thought it was an 'awful painting.' But for $2.99, she thought 'why not?' That is until she got into her car and noticed something. 'It had a little plaque at the bottom of the frame,' Alcorn recalls. 'Out of curiosity, I type in the name and find out it was Johann Berthelsen.' An American impressionist painter whose pieces hang in art galleries all over the country, Berthelsen's works go can for as little as $1,000 to upwards of $35,000. 'My first thought was: This isn't real,' she says. 'It's probably just a fake.' Hundreds of volunteers put on 'Night to Shine' in Kettering So she posted it on Facebook in a free art appraisal group, and the photos quickly took off. Many people advised her to get it authenticated. She found an auction house in Cincinnati that quickly accepted the painting. 'While it was listed in this auction – people were pre bidding on it – so it started out at like $600 and on auction day it made its way up to $1,500,' she says. 'It lasted like approximately 30 seconds and it was like a bidding war it was like and then it settled on $2,300. 'I couldn't believe it. I was sweating, I was nervous, and I was, like, even if it goes for $1,500, I'll be happy. 'We paid $2.99 for it.' A moment Alcorn says she will never forget. 'I think it's probably a once in a lifetime thing,' she says. 'I don't think I'll ever find something like that again, but you never know.' Alcorn says she and her fiancé Arron recently got engaged so the money will go towards their wedding. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Hundreds of volunteers put on ‘Night to Shine' in Kettering

KETTERING, Ohio (WDTN) — A special worldwide event celebrates people with special needs and disabilities. A Night to Shine with the Tim Tebow Foundation has been going on for more than a decade, but this is the third year the Kettering Assembly of God has hosted the free event, bringing in about 250 guests age 14 and older for an unforgettable prom night experience. 'Some of them, this is the first time. For some, they've been coming for all three years,' smiles Josh Plaisance, who is the lead pastor at Kettering Assembly of God. Taking part in a night of games, karaoke, and dancing, it takes more than 400 volunteers to make it all happen. A team of makeup artists and hair stylists donate their time, spending the day getting them ready for the night. 'We got makeup going on. We got fingernail polish. We got hair going on. Everything we can possibly do for them to make them feel good,' smiles Linda Hamilton, a hairstylist at The Designery. 'I have a special needs daughter that I know she absolutely can't wait for this night.' 'This is my part. So, I love to pay it forward and come and put the makeup on the girls,' says Bonnie Simpson, who is a makeup artist with Mary Kay. 'We make them look good. We make them feel good.' Volunteers help attendees to shine their brightest on a night that's just as special as they are. 'It's great. It's wonderful. I enjoy doing everything. And I get to see all my friends,' states Amy Reeves, who's attended Night to Shine many times. At the end of the night, everyone was crowned king and queen. The church is already making plans for next year, and they're always looking for donations or volunteers. For more information, click here. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. 10th annual memorial poker run raises money for local JROTC scholarships

BAY COUNTY, Fla. (WMBB) – Dozens rode for a cause at the Bay County Motorcycle Foundation's 10th annual JROTC Scholarship Poker Run. The ride is in memorial of 19-year-old Dylan Corbin. In October 2015, Dylan died from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident. He was a student at Deane Bozeman High School. Panama City Police searching for missing teenager Bikers say this is the perfect way to honor his legacy. 'He was a biker supported a community biker community came together where most of us are veterans. A lot of us are veterans we all came and thought it was a good cause, support our Bay County Junior ROTC,' biker Michael S. Husava said. Dylan was part of the JROTC program, so the money raised will go towards Bay County JROTC scholarships. 'It's a worthy cause. It's a worthy event to raise money for our kids. And it's so important that the kids, especially high school age, realize there are people in the community that appreciate what they do. It's not easy for kids to be in ROTC or JROTC. It takes a commitment and hopefully, events like this can keep them funded for uniforms and go on to other events,' EOD Motorcycle Club Chapter President Mike Fennewald said. 'This is very big. Very big. There are many seniors that I know myself have benefited from this scholarship, and I just want to give a huge thank you to the Corbin family for their continued support they have of this event, as well as for honoring the memory of their son,' Mosley MC JROTC Executive Officer Aiden Pinkard said. Mosley High School JROTC presented the colors at the opening ceremony at Annie's Hideaway in Lynn Haven. 7th annual 'Night to Shine' event celebrates special needs community members Then bikers made their way to St. Joe Beach, Port St. Joe, Parker, Springfield, and ended at Moseys in Panama City. Now in its sixth year, South Ridge Church has hosted Night to Shine, a one-of-a-kind prom night experience celebrated globally.
