Nijut Moina 2.0 to cover 4L girls, aims to end child marriage by 2026

Guwahati: Nijut Moina 2.0, the second edition of the ambitious scheme of the Assam govt to check child marriage by providing universal free admission to girl students from higher secondary to PG-level, will cover about four lakh girl students this year, more than double from last year's 1.6 lakh beneficiaries. CM Himanta Biswa Sarma distributed admission forms at Gauhati University on Wednesday to formally launch the initiative. He said irrespective of religion and caste, the Assam govt is committed to bringing down child marriage to zero by 2026 by facilitating the study of girls up to higher classes. "We have renewed our tirade against child marriage. With the launch of Nijut Moina 2.0, four lakh girl students will save themselves from its scourge while fulfilling their academic dreams," Sarma said. Under the scheme, monthly financial assistance will be transferred to students' bank accounts via direct benefit transfer (DBT) -- Rs 1,000 for HS students, Rs 1,250 for undergraduate students, and Rs 2,500 for postgraduates. The 2025-26 edition will cover HS, UG, PG, and BEd students. Eligibility is open to all unmarried girl students domiciled in Assam, regardless of economic background. However, married girls are excluded — except those pursuing PG and BEd studies. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Back Pain Treatments That Might Surprise You! To expand its reach, Nijut Moina 2.0 now includes central universities such as Tezpur University and Assam University, alongside provincialised colleges and self-financing courses. The Nijut Moina scheme will play a major role in enabling these girls to continue their studies, thus preventing child marriages, he asserted. "We have a society where even a 14-year-old has to live with the tag of someone's third wife. These girls are first stopped from attending school, then forced into marriage and pressured to bear children," Sarma added. He noted the contrasting pictures in the state — while in some areas 22-year-old girls are mothers of four children, others of the same age at institutions like Cotton University in Guwahati are seen pursuing PG degrees. Sarma explained that Nijut Moina 2.0 will cover girl students of the first and second years of HS, the first and second years of UG, and the first and second years of PG. "In the next year, the final year students of UG will be brought under the ambit, thereby ensuring 100 per cent coverage of girl students under the scheme. Subsequently, Nijut Moina will cover 10 lakh girl students," the chief minister added.

Assam govt committed to eradicating child marriage by 2026: Himanta

Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday asserted that his government is committed to bringing down the number of child marriages in the state to zero by 2026. He said the second edition of the 'Nijut Moina' scheme will enable the eradication of the menace. "We have renewed our fight against child marriage with the launch of Nijut Moina 2.0, which will cover over 4 lakh girls in Assam, saving them from child marriage and giving wings to their educational dreams," Sarma said, while launching the second edition of the scheme here by distributing forms to girl students. The scheme is an important chapter in the state government's efforts to fight against child marriage and will assist over 4 lakh girls in escaping child marriage to become academically empowered, he said. "For parents who wish to educate their daughters but face financial constraints, Nijut Moina serves as a source of hope and inspiration," he asserted. In Assam, two societies co-exist -- one in which 22-year-old daughters go for higher education in universities and the other in which 14-year-old girls are pressured into marriage and motherhood, Sarma claimed. "We are committed to eradicating this social disparity and bringing down the number of child marriages in the state to zero by 2026," he added. Sarma claimed that Assam is the only state in India which provides universal free admission to students. "Our goal is to ensure that every child in Assam gets access to quality education, irrespective of religion, caste, tribe or gender. We are solely focused on realising this goal," he said. The growing number of colleges and universities has broadened the chances for the students, enabling them to pursue diverse educational paths without limitations, he said. Assam is now self-reliant, determined and full of aspirations with the state's youth actively contributing to nation-building, Sarma added. Considering the potential of the scheme towards bringing about large-scale social changes, the parameters of Nijut Moina 2.0 have been expanded to bring more beneficiaries under it to cover students of state universities, the two central universities and self-financing courses. The second edition of the scheme will cover girl students of first and second year of higher secondary, first and second year of undergraduate and first and second year of postgraduate education. Girls from all families, irrespective of their economic condition, are eligible for this scheme. Girl students of class 11 will receive Rs 1,000 per month, those in degree first year will get Rs 1,250 per month and those in post-graduation and will receive Rs 2,500 per month. Married girls, except in those in PG and categories, and in-service candidates, daughters of ministers, MPs and MLAs and those receiving scooters under the Banikanta Kakati Award, unless they opt out of the scooter award, are not eligible under the scheme.
