Japanese-styled Kelantan man picks up litter to keep city clean
KOTA BARU: A man has caught public attention for collecting litter around popular spots in the city, including Jalan Istana, Gelanggang Seni, and Lembah Sireh, while dressed in a kimono.
Nik Ahmad Kasyfi Nik Zamani, 30, spends his free time picking up trash from drains, bushes, and roadsides using a stick and a basket strapped to his back.
Inspired by Japan's culture of cleanliness, he said he has been doing this alone since 2013 to help keep tourist areas in Kelantan clean.
"I started doing it quietly, but since last year, more people have started noticing after I began live-streaming my clean-up sessions on TikTok," he said.
The sixth of seven siblings, Nik Ahmad Kasyfi uses social media to raise awareness and promote cleanliness, engaging viewers in both the Kelantan dialect and Japanese, which he learned through YouTube videos.
"Alhamdulillah, many people have responded positively and supported my efforts. I hope to encourage others, especially Kelantanese, to take pride in keeping our environment clean," he added.
Though unpaid, he said the satisfaction of serving the community and inspiring others makes it all worthwhile.
