Advertisement The time bests the outdoor record of 15:25.27 that Elizabeth Leachman set in 2024 and the indoor record of 15:13.26 that Hedengren set almost exactly a month ago at the Nike Indoor Nationals. On Thursday, Hedengren finished third overall in the 5,000 meter race, five seconds behind BYU's Lexy Halladay-Lowry, who finished second. New Mexico's Pamela Kosgei won the race with a time of 14:52.45. What Jane Hedengren said after the race Hedengren has been on a tear as of late, setting indoor national records for the high school 5,000 meter and the mile (4:26.14) at the Nike Indoor Invitational as well as the two-mile (9:34.12), which she set just six days ago. Advertisement Before beating her own 5,000 meter record Thursday and becoming the first high school girl to run the race in under 15 minutes, Hedengren woke up with a sore throat, she told reporters post-race. 'I'm just so grateful to have competed tonight. I woke up sick this morning, and so, I just really didn't know how it was going to go,' she said, per FloTrack. She added, 'It was just a great opportunity to be out here and I'm so glad that like my body was able to pull through and I was able to feel decent today.' Hedengren on running for BYU After the race, the BYU commit expressed her excitement to join the BYU team. Advertisement 'I'm so excited for BYU. They're just such great women. I'm excited to build my relationships on that team,' she said. Hedengren already knows 'pretty much everyone on the team,' she said. 'But it's different when you're in the workouts with them, like hanging out all the time. You really get to know people. So I'm really looking forward to that aspect for sure,' she said.

Race walking champ at Long Island high school aims to make Olympic sport more popular

Race walking is an Olympic sport that made its debut more than 100 years ago, but it still doesn't get a lot of attention. Long Island high school athlete Gianna Mauri is hoping to change that. Walking a mile in Mauri's shoes may be the fastest mile you'll ever walk. The Sachem High School East senior is a dominant race walker who can walk a mile faster than most people can run it. "I can run it and feel out of breath, but be able to race walk in a race at that pace," she said. "Sometimes I'm like, 'I race walk at this pace?!'" Mauri won two national titles in the girls' one-mile race walk just three days apart at the New Balance Nationals in Boston and the Nike Indoor Nationals in New York City. "I feel like I made a milestone in my life. I will always look back at this moment, even when I'm struggling, and think I was able to accomplish something that I really didn't think that I would be able to do," she said. Race walking can be incredibly difficult because of the rules which require continual foot contact with the ground while keeping your support leg straight at all times. "Sometimes the rules can be a little stressful. In freshman year, I did get disqualified twice," Mauri said. Her coach Daniel Schaub said that's not unusual for new race walkers. "It's really common for new race walkers to break form early and have to deal with disqualifications," Schaub said. "'G' showed potential right away, and the journey from then has been insane." As if back-to-back titles weren't enough, Mauri beat her time by almost 14 seconds in the second championship for a personal record. "It felt amazing because my personal record was 7:23, and I was also kind of upset that I didn't break that at New Balance," she said. "I thought it would be easy to do, but I was so grateful to be able to break that." "I wasn't surprised and just very proud of her for committing in the way that she has," Schaub said. Mauri hopes people continue to learn more about this sport. Race walking is not offered at every college track program, but Mauri hopes she will inspire that to change. "I feel like sometimes people judge it before they know much about it, they think 'oh that's really easy' when it's difficult," she said. "It's one of those sports that if you work for it, you'll be able to accomplish great things."

Hometown Hero – Vanessa Jones, Toll Gate

WARWICK, RI (WPRI) — This week's Cardi's Furniture & Mattresses Hometown Sports Hero is Vanessa Jones. The Toll Gate Junior won Gold in the Weight Throw at the State Indoor Meet with a personal best throw of 59-feet, 2 inches, then she became the first Titan to win Gold at a National Indoor Meet, with a 58-1.75 toss at the Nike Indoor Nationals. 'The goal going into the year was to place All-American, even just make Finals at Nationals, but once I saw the numbers start jumping up there, and the rankings start climbing,' said Toll Gate Track Coach Derin Paskanik. 'Once she reached number one, I knew there was a good chance she could take home a National Title.' 'It was great,' Jones said. 'It was a once in a lifetime experience, 100-percent would do it again. I'll have the opportunity next year and I hope to have the same outcome.' Jones found the sport in 8th grade, thanks to a little encouragement from one of her teachers. 'So, my 8th grade Social Studies teacher who's also our long-distance coach, he told me to try out because he saw the way I was built in 8th grade, and he thought I could be good,' Jones said. 'No idea what it was when I first came out. I didn't care for it for the first month and then it started to get a little bit fun. And I just kept it going from there.' Vanessa will look to carry her success to the Outdoor Season with the Hammer Throw and then she'll turn her focus to her Senior year. Chasing the State Record in the Weight Throw and adding more National Golds, plus picking her college home, all part of her to-do list. 'It is very exciting, it's very ego lifting, I will say. All the schools you would never expect to reach out, do end up reaching out. It boosts you up, makes you happy. I'm thrilled with it. I like going out places and checking out schools, talking to coaches. It's great.' 'The skies the limit, like I said, there's a bunch of records out there,' Paskanik said. '63 is the State Record. 60 feet is the best one and I think anything above 60 is definitely within range.'
