Greece's unemployment falls to 17-year low in May
ATHENS, July 2 (Xinhua) - Greece's unemployment rate fell to 7.9 percent in May 2025, the lowest level recorded in 17 years, according to data released Wednesday by the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT).
The figure marks a notable decline from 8.3 percent in April 2025 and 10.5 percent in May 2024. The last time the unemployment rate was lower was in May 2008, when it stood at 7.4 percent, just months before the Greek debt crisis (2009-2018) plunged the country into severe financial turmoil.
Unemployment in Greece peaked at a record 27.4 percent during the height of the crisis, between 2012 and 2014.
Greek Minister of Labor and Social Security Niki Kerameus welcomed the latest data in a social media post, describing it as "a very positive development." She added that the government would continue its efforts to further reduce unemployment and support job creation.
Since exiting its international bailout programs in 2018, Greece has returned to a path of economic recovery, with steady improvements in key indicators including employment.
