Hit the mountains in the Iron Crown Trail Run on July 12
POLOKWANE – Trail running enthusiasts can look forward to this year's Iron Crown Trail Run in Magoebaskloof on Saturday, July 12.
Hosted by the Haenertsburg Rotary Club, the event promises a day filled with adventure, stunning scenery, and community spirit.
The race begins in Kerk Street near the Haenertsburg Village Community Centre, where runners will set off on carefully designed routes that meander through village streets, gravel roads, firebreaks, and single-track footpaths.
These trails avoid main roads such as the R71 and R528, allowing participants to fully immerse themselves in the natural beauty of the area.
The main 22km race is a challenging climb, beginning at 1 439m above sea level and ascending 687m to the summit of Iron Crown, the highest peak in Limpopo at 2 126m.
Along the way, runners will take in panoramic views of Hunters' Valley and the sparkling expanse of Ebenezer Dam before descending through some of the region's most captivating landscapes.
For those seeking a less demanding experience, the 10km route offers a moderate challenge, rising to 1 600m above sea level.
A 5km fun run will also be held, welcoming families, beginners, and anyone who wants to enjoy the festive atmosphere and support a good cause.
Proceeds from the event will go towards several approved Rotary projects, including their environmental initiative, Preserve Planet Earth, and other community-based efforts.
Water stations will be set up along the route to keep runners hydrated, while food and drinks will be available at the start and finish to keep the energy going.
Registration will take place at the Haenertsburg Clinic from 16:00-18:00 on Friday, and again on Saturday morning from 06:00-8:00.
Early entries and manual registrations will also be accepted on Thursday from 16:00-18:00 at The Farmyard in Polokwane and the Lifestyle Centre in Tzaneen.
The 22km race will start at 07:30 and runners must finish by the 12:30 cut-off time. The 5km fun run begins at 08:00, followed by the 10km race at 08:30.
Due to environmental conservation efforts, each race is limited to 200 participants. Those wishing to take part are encouraged to enter early at
