Home guard continues to serve in UP's Azamgarh for over 20 years despite 10 criminal cases against him
LUCKNOW: A case of sheer administrative lapse came to light when a home guard, posted at Mubarakpur police station in Azamgarh, was found to be continuing on duty despite being implicated in as many as ten criminal cases between 2005 and 2025. The tainted home guard Nirankar Ram, according to police records, joined the home guards department in 2001. At present, he is under suspension following a fresh case of theft being lodged against him two months ago. His earlier 'criminal attributes' came to light when the fresh case of theft was lodged against him. While the training certificate, issued by then commandant Ali Ahmad at the District Training Centre in Azamgarh in 2001, rated his character and conduct as 'good', soon after his induction into the service, Nirankar Ram's name began surfacing in connection with criminal incidents. The first case against him was registered under the NDPS Act case at Mubarakpur police station, Azamgarh, in 2005. This made the home guard embark upon a journey into the world of crime spanning 16 years across three districts, including Azamgarh, Mau, and Deoria, all in eastern UP. Of the total 10 criminal cases lodged against Nirankar Ram, six are registered at Mubarakpur police station in Azamgarh itself, despite the accused serving at the same location. One case was registered at GRP Mau and another at GRP Bhatni. Two other cases were registered at Sidhari in Azamgarh.

Varanasi: A case of gangster serving at a police station as a home guard for 24 years came to light in Azamgarh district after a message gone viral highlighted that Nirankar Ram, with many criminal cases, including of theft and rape and booked under Gangsters Act, was deployed at Mubarakpur police station. Azamgarh ASP (City) Madhuban Kumar Singh said on Tuesday, "Police was alerted through social media that several cases of crime were registered against home guard Nirankar Ram, deployed at Mubarakpur police station and taking serious note of it, a report was sent to the commandant of home guards, after which he was suspended. He has not been on duty for the past one month and further action is being taken in this regard. " After allegations levelled against him on social media, police checked records of Nirankar Ram and it came to light that eight criminal cases of theft, rape and cases under sections of the NDPS Act and POCSO Act were lodged against him. He was also booked under Gangsters Act. Six of these cases are registered at the same police station where he had been serving for 24 years. Since the first case was registered in 2003, serious allegations continued against Nirankar Ram until 2017. Despite this, he continued working and advocating for his cases. Police were investigating how many cases he had been acquitted in and in which cases trials were continuing. Before him, Nakdu Yadav, also booked under Gangster Act twice, was found serving at police station in Azamgarh for 35 years. Nakdu Yadav was exposed by his nephew, Nandlal Yadav, after he landed in jail in 2024 in a case of altercation with neighbours. When police started investigating Nakdu Yadav's criminal history after lodging a case by Azamgarh's Rani ki Sarai police on Dec 9, 2024, under sections 319 (cheating by impersonation) and 318 of BNS, the allegations proved true. Nakdu Yadav, resident of Chakwara in the Rani Ki Sarai police station area, was charged with murder and concealing evidence in 1984. Nakdu had shot and killed Munna Yadav in Jahanaganj area over rivalry in 1984. In 1987, Yadav was charged with robbery. He was booked under Gangster Act twice between 1984 and 1989. Educated up to the fourth grade, Yadav obtained fake certificate of passing eighth grade and secured a home guard job in 1989 by changing his name to Nandlal Yadav, son of Lokai Yadav. After this, he served as home guard in Mehnagar since 1990. In 1992, the then station officer of Rani ki Sarai police station and the local intelligence unit had signed his character certificate and came under scrutiny too.
