Sooraj Pancholi recalls terrible time in jail: ‘Slept on newspaper, was in the cell where they had put Kasab'
Actor Sooraj Pancholi has shared his harrowing experience in Arthur Road Jail, where he was imprisoned in connection with Jiah Khan's suicide case. The actor revealed that he faced harsh treatment and was subjected to difficult conditions, including sleeping on newspapers during his time in solitary confinement. Sooraj said, 'It's all hazy. I was just a 21-year-old boy at the time. I was sent to Arthur Road Jail and put in the 'anda cell' (solitary confinement). I was in the same cell where they had put Kasab (26/11 attacker Ajmal Kasab). They treated me like I'd done a bomb blast." The actor added, 'They put me where they put Kasab. I didn't even have a pillow; I'd sleep on newspapers. They treated me terribly, like I had committed some horrible crime. I am not even exaggerating. It was four or five years later that I understood what exactly I had been through. When it was happening, it all felt like a dream." Jiah Khan, best known films like Nishabd and Ghajini, was found dead at her Mumbai home on June 3, 2013, by her mother. Later, her then-boyfriend, actor Sooraj Pancholi, was arrested on charges of abetment to suicide. The case was based on a six-page note that detailed her troubled relationship with Sooraj. The alleged suicide note narrated Jiah's 'intimate relationship, physical abuse and mental and physical torture' at the hands of Sooraj, which led her to take her own life, the central agency had said. Sooraj is the son of actors Aditya Pancholi and Zarina Wahab. In 2013, it was reported that the 21 days which Sooraj spent in jail took a serious toll on him. In 2023, Sooraj was acquitted of abetment to suicide charges in the case. The actor made his debut with Athiya Shetty in 2015, and was also seen in seen in Time to Dance, opposite Isabelle Kaif, Katrina Kaif's sister. Sooraj was most recently seen in the historical action film Kesari Veer, directed by Prince Dhiman. The film also stars Suniel Shetty, Vivek Oberoi, Barkha Bisht, Aruna Irani, and Akanksha Sharma in key roles.

Actor Sooraj Pancholi's life came to a halt when he faced serious allegations in connection with the Jiah Khan suicide case. In a recent interview, he shared the impact of the prolonged legal battle, acknowledging that it exacted a huge toll on his life. Looking back, Sooraj said, "My equation with my family is better than ever now because there was a point in our lives where we couldn't make eye contact with each other and speak because there was so much pain each one of us was going through. Now we can look at each other and smile at the past. When something like that happens to a family, we, of course, get close. We were not that close before the incident, but after that, it brought us very close.' He shared that he feels people have misunderstood him, and thanked his family for supporting him during his low phase. Sooraj shared, 'Even during the low phase, I was always positive because I had people around me who were a good support system. Ups and downs are a part of a person's life, not every day can be a happy day. The trolling, the news, the bashing, being pointed at, not getting work, being pushed on the side, seeing other people go much ahead of you, everything gets to you. Zarina Wahab spoke about her son Sooraj Pancholi dating late actor Jiah Khan before she died by suicide in 2013. Talking to Nayandeep Rakshit, she stated that Jiah was depressed when she took her life, but it was due to facing rejection from the Telugu film industry. She also spoke of the call Sooraj received but could not answer. She said, 'A lot of people don't know this, so I want to clarify it. The friendship or whatever they had…Salman was about to launch him (Sooraj), so I asked him to put a stop to it. He broke it off with her (Jiah) because her mother also wasn't happy about it. She asked if she could meet him sometimes, and he agreed to, only as a friend. They had broken up a month before the incident took place.' Jiah, who was best known for starring in Nishabd and Ghajini, was found dead at her home in Mumbai on 3 June 2013 at age 25. Based on a letter that was seized a week later, Mumbai Police booked Sooraj for abetment to suicide, and he was arrested. The letter mentioned her troubled relationship with Sooraj, alleging that he mentally and physically abused her. In 2023, a special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court acquitted Sooraj in the case. 'Due to paucity of evidence, this court can't hold you (Sooraj Pancholi) guilty, hence acquitted,' said Judge AS Sayyed of the special CBI court in Mumbai.

Jiah Khan "Tried To Call Sooraj Pancholi" The Day She Died, Reveals Actor's Mother Zarina Wahab
Aditya Pancholi and Zarina Wahab's son Sooraj Pancholi was accused of abetting Jiah Khan's suicide (2013). After a decade-long legal battle, CBI Special Court acquitted Sooraj due to lack of evidence in 2023. Sooraj Pancholi, who was about to debut around the time of Jia's death, was grilled on social media for his relationship with the Nishabd actress. Sooraj's mother Zarina Wahab has now come out in the defence of her son and revealed they were not together before Jiah's death. Zarina Wahab also revealed that Jiah tried to "reach out to Sooraj" the day she died as she was "upset" after being rejected for a Telugu film. During a conversation with Nayandeep Rakshit, Zarina Wahab said, "I want to clear one thing that a lot of people think about Sooraj. When they (Jiah and Sooraj) were friends, Salman was launching him. Then I told him that Salman is going to launch you, (so) stop (this)! Then he went and told her, my parents don't want us to meet and your mother also doesn't want us to meet. So let's break up. "Then she said, 'can I come and meet you sometimes?' So he told her, 'you can come and meet me as a friend but not as a girlfriend.' The incident happened a month before their breakup. No one knows about this. In fact, she was going to South for a Telugu film around the same time in June. On the spot, she was rejected and she was very depressed." Zarina shared that Jiah called Sooraj the day she died but he couldn't respond to her due to work commitments. When he responded, it was already too late. "She (Jiah) was so depressed that she was trying to call Sooraj. But his classes were going on because of some shooting. He couldn't take her call, and when he later saw his phone, he texted her, 'I'm free now, if you want to call me, call.' "But by then, she had already passed away. And now everyone says he did this, he did that... It's so wrong. The poor girl was really sweet, but only God knows what truly happened to her," said Zarina Wahab. Zarina also revealed that Jiah was upset after being rejected for a Telugu film that eventually went to Rakul Preet Singh. "Sooraj had even sent her a bouquet when she told him she was trying her luck in the South. "Whatever happened, it wasn't good, but people misunderstood. How many people can you go around explaining things to? But he (Sooraj) went through a lot," she concluded. Sooraj Pancholi will next be seen in Kesari Veer alongside Vivek Oberoi, Suniel Shetty. The film will release in theatres on May 23.
